The Hose

Bongo examining an old fire hoseHmm. What’s going on here?

This is really strange.

This piece of hose has been hanging out in the parking lot of my trails for a long time.

It’s always been straight as an arrow and flat on the ground.

So what’s going on today? Why is this hose askew?

Did it finally give up?

The last holdout, and it doesn’t want to hold out any more?

Calling it quits?

Bongo standing over an old fire hose

Look at this poor thing. All squiggly shaped now.

There used to be bunches of these hoses. They all hung out in straight lines and there was no question about it.

The cars knew where to park.

But one by one they slithered away and left this poor last hose to try to control the cars by itself.

And it couldn’t do it.

The cars park every which way now and this hose can’t do a thing about it.

But if this last hose leaves those cars will be parking out in the street.

There won’t be anything left to keep them in the parking lot.

That could be chaos. People coming back after a nice, long hike – and where’s their car?

Panicked people will be running down my street wondering where their cars wandered off to.

I think I’d better do some investigating.

Bongo looking away from the bent up fire hose

Maybe I can find where those missing hoses went off to – what hole they crawled into.

I’ll bring them back to help this last hose out, so it will stay.

Somehow I’ve got to convince this hose to stay because if I don’t, and those cars start wandering off, I don’t want any of them parking at my front door.

Outside the Trail

Bongo sniffing in the bushesMy person was dinking around with her camera again, so to pass the time I started sniffing.

And I found a real treat.

Just a little ways off the trail I found another trail.

Not a people trail, but a trail just the same.

And this trail had some really great smells on it.

Smells that I don’t usually find on my regular trails.

Which goes to show you that if you sniff outside the trail, you’re likely to come up with some great ideas – I mean some great smells.

I hope my person messes around with her camera for a long time. I want to get my fill of what’s here.

Oh no, she’s done already. That wasn’t long enough.

Hey person, come over this way. There’s a trail here too.

What do you mean, there’s not a trail? There is too.

See, it connects up over here to this other trail. The one that goes down into the wash.

Try it, you’ll like it.

My person is just no fun at times.

Bongo being pulled back to the trail

She made me leave my secret smell stash…

And plod down the regular trails.

Just wait till she finds an off trail treasure of her own someday.

I’m going to yank my leash so hard she flies.

The Slide

Bongo at the top of a natural slideMy trails have a well kept secret.

I’m really glad not too many people – or dogs – know about this, because my trails might get so crowded there wouldn’t be any room to move.

So here’s the secret. My trails are like a theme park – with rides and everything.

Well, at least one ride anyway.

You see, there’s a slide on my trails.

It slides right down into the wash.

When my younger person was a kind of little person he used to slide down this slide a lot with his friends. That was before I was around.

This is only the second time I’ve gotten to slide down it. The last time we were with my little friend who visits sometimes.

I don’t know why my person doesn’t take me down this slide every time. It’s right on the way home – if we go this way, that is.

So now that I’ve told you all about my slide, I guess I’d better go down it.

Bongo starting down the natural slideBongo heading down the gully of a steep hill

Your turn next.

Don’t Get Caught

Bongo on the CouchWhat do you mean, I need to hear this Bible story and it’s going to teach me a lesson?

I don’t need any lessons. I already know everything I need to know.

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

Jesus said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?”

***

Oh, now I get it. You’re planning to put me in charge of Scratchy’s food allowance.

I’m listening with all ears now.

***

Jesus continued, “It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.”

***

This is a trick, isn’t it? To get me not to eat Scratchy’s food. If I actually give Scratchy his food, then I’ll get put in charge of everything. And I can eat all your food and my food too.

This is getting good.

***

Jesus said, “But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.”

***

Wait a minute. What are you saying?

You mean that if I get into mischief because I think you’re not coming home for awhile I might get into trouble?

You know Scratchy does all that stuff, don’t you?

Oh. You’re saying it’s like the times you came in when I wasn’t expecting you and you caught me sleeping on the couch.

Okay, I admit I slept on the couch once or twice.

But Scratchy still did all the rest of the stuff.

Maybe you could send Jesus to give Scratchy what for.

No Leaves

Bongo in a pile of fallen mesquite beansThis time of year most people – and dogs – have piles of leaves in their yard.

Some people think they’re a chore because they have to rake them up and get rid of them.

But kids and dogs think they’re great fun.

At least I think they do.

I don’t have one tree in my yard or on my trails that drop their leaves.

Not one.

The juniper tree drops berries, and the pine trees drop needles – but not one tree drops leaves.

I’ve always wanted to run and jump into a big pile of leaves, but it’s something I’ve never gotten to do.

So while I was out walking on my trails today I found that my trails do have something to offer.

Maybe not any leaves, but I guess this is the next best thing.

Beans.

Mesquite tree beans.

Piles of them.

Maybe if I add the piles together they’ll be big enough to jump in.

I’m not sure they’ll have the crunch that freshly fallen leaves have.

But there is something they do have, and maybe this makes them even better than a pile of leaves.

Bongo sniffing mesquite beans

These beans smell really good.

Hey, we even have one of these trees in my yard.

I think I’ll gather up some beans and bring them inside.

Strange Rock Behavior

Bongo sniffing a pile of rocksThere are a lot of rocks on my trails.

Big rocks and little rocks. Rock mountains and boulders.

Mostly they just hang out where they are.

Well, sometimes a bunch of tiny rocks will gang up on my person and slip right out from under her foot.

There’s one trail that she won’t let me take her down at all when it’s dry because it’s full of little rocks that like to do that to her.

.

.

.

But today, I found a few rocks doing something different.

Bongo sniffing another pile of rocks

They decided to see how high they can get.

I found two piles of rocks right next to each other.

Come to think of it, I saw some of those piles on our hike the other day – on different trails.

And my person says she’s seen piles in other places too.

So why are these rocks doing this?

Are they trying to top the next rock by seeing who can climb the highest?

Are they trying to get all the rocks to join them so they can become part of a rock wall?

Maybe they’re playing a new game. You know, like pig pile on – only it’s rock pile on.

Just when I was about to give up trying to figure out what these rocks are up to, I came across another rock.

And this rock had really strange behavior.

Prickly pear cactus with a red rock sticking out of it

I mean, who would purposely stick themselves into a cactus.

Usually it’s the cactus that sticks itself into someone.

Oh wait, now I get it. That cactus is sticking.

It’s sticking out its tongue.

Brightly Colored Bags

Bongo and a green bagStrange things showed up on my trails today.

As I headed out I saw something green in the distance.

Normally I would think nothing of seeing green. There are all kinds of shades of green on my trails. But this was a new shade of green.

I’ve never seen anything quite like it. At least not on my trails.

When I got close I found that somebody had left a little bag. I thought maybe they’d left me a present.

But my person said it wasn’t for me and I had to leave it there.

Okay person, you’d better give me some treats when we get home if I leave this.

I left it. I’m still waiting for the treats.

We headed on down the trail.

We hadn’t gone far when I saw something blue peeking out of the bushes.

Something blue behind a bush

The only blue I ever see on my trails is in the sky so this was really strange.

When we got closer I saw that it was another bag.

Blue bag behind a bush

A blue bag behind a bush.

It reminded me of the time I found a blue Easter egg on my trails.

Person, this is like a treasure hunt. I know someone is leaving those bags for me to keep.

I wonder what’s inside.

I guess my person knew more than she’d been letting on because she decided to tell me what’s inside.

She asked me if I remembered those black bags that we get at the Pet Waste Station at the beginning of the trail.

Bongo sniffing near a little black bag

You mean these bags?

Then I figured it out.

But those dark bags contain dark poop.

I’ve never seen a dog with blue poop, or green poop.

I might have to put on my Detective Dog hat and investigate this.

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

Bongo behind barsOctober is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and since I came from dog jail a shelter I thought I should help promote this.

So I’m going to tell you how awful it is living in dog jail. I was surrounded by all these other dogs and none of us did anything wrong, but they made us live in cages.

We didn’t have anybody to love on us or take us for walks – well, sometimes we did, but we had to share a few people with a whole lot of dogs.

And everybody wanted their turn for loves and walks.

Bongo looking down the trail

There was never enough to go around.

When my people finally came and took me out of that dog jail and brought me to my new forever home I wagged my tail and jumped for joy.

Well, I was a little nervous at first, but after I realized I got to stay, then I did those things.

And I had someone around to toss balls to me anytime I wanted.

Bongo behind couches with a tennis ball

And someone to pull mischief on. Whew! I’m glad I got that last sentence crossed out before you read it.

Maybe she'll get out of bed for my snake

Maybe she’ll get out of bed for my snake.

There are still lots of lonely dogs in shelters everywhere.

So if you have an empty spot in your house and heart that could be filled by a dog, there’s no better time than now to give a dog a new forever home.

You’ll be glad you did.

And so will the dog.

Camera Adventures

Bongo in Oak CreekI think I’m developing a love/hate relationship with my person’s camera.

Sometimes I get stuck at home because that camera gets first dibs on the picture hikes.

But today I got to go somewhere I rarely get to go – because my person wanted to take pictures for her class.

And it was fun.

First we stopped at my buddy Pablo’s house to pick up Pablo and his person. And now I’m really jealous.

I found out that Pablo has a creek near his house. And he doesn’t even care.

My person made me get out of the creek, and then we all got in the car and headed to a trail.

Not one of my trails, mind you. This was a different one.

Bongo, Pablo, and Pablo's person on Bell Rock

We got to climb up on Bell Rock.

Bell Rock

Right next to Courthouse Butte.

Courthouse Butte

But my person spent so much time taking pictures…

Sunset from Bell Rock

that I had to walk her back to the car in the dark.

It’s a good thing she brought me along. She might have gotten lost without me.

Third Week of People Mischief

Bongo sitting in front of a futonThis is the third week in a row that my people have pulled mischief on me.

I am so miserable. It can be really awful having mischief making people.

They both left the house on foot – and they didn’t take me.

Do you believe it? On foot, and they didn’t take me.

My person said I’d been on two walks the day before, so it wouldn’t hurt me to miss my walk.

So now what I want to know is who told her? My walks with my neighbor dog Toby when she leaves me all day are supposed to be a secret.

I pointed out that it is National Walk Your Dog Week and my person said I could have walks the rest of the week.

She said they were going into coyote territory and they didn’t want me trying to give any of those coyotes what for.

Well, they didn’t see or hear a coyote, but they did get attacked.

By cactus pricklers ,thorny bushes, and loose rocks. My person came home full of scratches.

They should have taken me. I would have protected them.

But it’s all about that camera still. At least my person showed me where they went.

Coffee Pot Rock and an ocotillo

Mogollon Rim

Tree near a cave entrance

View of Sedona from Keyhole Cave entrance

Next week there’s going to be some new mischief.

That camera will be missing when I’m through.

But I won’t get into trouble for anything because Scratchy pulls all the mischief around here.

Now if I could only convince my people…
