They’re Back

Bongo in a big puddleI’ve got a real mystery on my hands paws.

.

.

.

.

.

.

I’m going to have to put my Detective Dog hat on for sure.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

There. I feel better already.

Oh yeah. I guess I’d better tell you what this mystery is all about.

About a week ago I told you about my puddle invasion.

My puddle had appeared after missing for weeks, but then I discovered it had been invaded by tadpoles.

Then both the puddle and the tadpoles disappeared, but when the puddle came back it left the tadpoles somewhere else.

For a few days now my puddle has been sticking around – just like usual. No tadpoles – just a puddle.

Last night we had a thunderstorm. It was really horrible, waking up in the middle of the night to all that thunder.

I wish it would leave me alone.

But I think tadpoles must like thunder.

Because today when I went out on my trails, not only had my puddle grown –

but when I stuck my feet into it …

Bongo's paws in a puddle with tadpoles

I felt these tickly things bumping into me.

Tadpoles in a muddy puddle

The tadpoles had returned.

And now it’s up to Detective Dog to figure out what those tadpoles are up to.

And what they intend to do with my puddle.

Lost People

Lost people on the trailI think it’s pretty hard to get lost on my trails – even when I go outside of my usual rounds, but of course it’s pretty easy to follow the smells.

My person thinks the trails are hard to get lost on too, but she uses a different method to find her way.

She’s taller than me so she can see further. She says there are lots of landmarks to find your way by.

It’s also hard to go very far without running into either houses or something that falls between a very large rock and a very small mountain.

I can’t read them so I have to trust my person when she says those tall poles sticking out of the ground hold signs that point out the trails.

In some places there are even cairns to mark the trails. At least my person says they mark the trails.

I thought they were put there so dogs could leave messages for each other. At least that’s what we use them for.

Even with all these ways to navigate (Person, navigate is too big a word for me.) the trails, my trails can be really tricky for new people. There are little loops that go off and come back to the main trail. Maybe they were put there on purpose so people would go in circles and not be able to find their car again. Then the trail loop car collectors could take their pick of the cars that were left.

Those car collectors probably don’t like my person much though. When she’s asked, she tells those lost people how to get out of the loop.

Bongo in front of a bush

I think my person’s pretty cool though. Today I got loves from some people she was helping.

Those people were really lost. They were trying to find a place called Wisconsin.

Weed Pulling Traitor

cat lying in a yardSomething is terribly wrong with this picture.

And my person is a real traitor. I think I can even get Scratchy to stand with me on this.

.

.

.

.

.

Bongo cornering Scratchy under a desk

Well, maybe.

You see, my person said she was going out to pull weeds in the front yard.

And she wouldn’t let me come with her because there’s no fence in the front.

I would stay in the yard. Really. For a minute anyway.

So my person went out and left me in the house.

She didn’t bother to tell me she already had a helper.

Cat eating grass

And she let that cat eat my weeds.

I like weeds. I could have eaten all of them myself.

But that’s not even the worst part.

back of cat's head next to railroad tie

That cat looks awfully close to my person in that picture.

My person is only supposed to be close to me. No other animals allowed.

Okay Scratchy – maybe a little bit to you.

But not to that strange neighbor cat!

Oh dear! It’s a good thing I got hold of my person’s camera and checked her pictures out.

Cat on a lap

Is that cat sitting on my person’s lap?

This calls for measures of the strictest kind.

My person will no longer be allowed to pull weeds without my supervision.

And next time she goes out to pull some –

I’ve got a cat to chase.

Walking’s not an Option

Bongo looking at the viewLately I’ve been wanting to go on a different trail – it’s a little longer than the way we usually go on my trails.

But my person always says she’s too busy, or it’s too hot, or she comes up with any number of excuses.

Today it was cloudy and cooler, and my person didn’t have bunches of stuff to do, so we got to go on that trail.

We were having a great time – until I heard it.

Thunder!

Over there – and that way too!

We were surrounded!

Person, why did you want to go on this trail? We could have been almost home by now.

There was only one direction to go – and my person wouldn’t let me go that way.

Okay, fine. Then we’re not going at all.

Bongo holding his ground

Bongo refusing to move

It became a game of tug of war.

Until my collar came off.

Then my person did something really strange.

She walked to the end of my her leash, sat on the ground, and started taking pictures of me.

Bongo reluctantly walking

I like the sound her camera makes. Eventually I walked to where she sat.

Bongo Profile

Then she moved back to the end of her leash, and made me walk to her again.

Bongo looking at red rocks

Bongo walking toward the camera

Then she did it all over again.

Bongo walking, Thunder Mountain behind him

My person thinks I’m afraid of this thunder, but I’ve been thinking. Sometimes I complain too much when she stops all the time to take pictures. I think I’ll be nice to her today and let her take all the pictures she wants.

And just to prove I was doing it to be nice to her, when we got past the part with all the best scenery, I started walking with her again.

National Ice Cream Day

Chocolate ice cream in an ice cream makerYesterday was National Ice Cream Day.

So my person decided to celebrate the day by making me some homemade ice cream.

At least I thought she was making me some homemade ice cream.

She started cooking up all the ingredients.

It smelled good, but there was something missing.

A really important smell.

I wanted to make sure my person hadn’t forgotten the special ingredient so I asked her if she remembered to put the fish in.

She looked at me really funny.

I guess that means she forgot.

I tried to convince her that there was still time to put it in and she told me there were no fish in Mexican Chocolate ice cream.

Mexican Chocolate?!

That sounds like a flavor for a Chihuahua – not for a big dog like me.

I tried to explain to my person that since she was making this ice cream for me she should make my favorite flavor.

And you know what she told me?

My person said this was not National Dog Ice Cream Day and Mexican Chocolate is my younger person’s favorite flavor.

And since my younger person is home for the weekend my person is making his favorite flavor to celebrate National Ice Cream Day.

But, but…

My younger person isn’t even here right now. He’s over at a friend’s.

I’m here. Don’t you think you should make the favorite flavor of the one who stays home and hangs out with you?

I jumped up and down and did everything I could to try to convince my person to make my favorite flavor.

All to no good.

And then you know what she told me?

Dogs aren’t allowed to eat chocolate.

Back Down the Mountain

Jesus heals boy with evil spiritI bet those disciples had a hard time coming down the mountain after Jesus turned all white in that story you told me last week.

But I guess they had to come down. There weren’t any fish on top of that mountain.

So did they get some fish when they got down from the mountain?

***

When they came down to the other disciples they saw a large crowd around them and teachers of the law arguing with them. When the people saw Jesus they ran to greet him and he asked them what they were arguing about.

***

I bet they were arguing about who had the most fish.

I am listening.

***

A man in the crowd answered Jesus. “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid.

***

I bet he’s just upset because he didn’t get any fish for dinner.

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

The man said he’d asked Jesus’ disciples to drive out the spirit from his son, but they couldn’t.

***

That man’s son must really be mad.

***

“O unbelieving generation,” Jesus said, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

They brought the boy to Jesus and when the evil spirit saw Jesus it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion.

***

That spirit must be really mad. I bet it wouldn’t even respond if you slapped it in the face with a big fish.

***

The boy’s father said to Jesus, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

“If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.”

Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

Jesus rebuked the spirit and it came out of the boy.

***

Woo woo! Give that boy some fish! And Jesus too.

Why don’t you think I’m listening?

***

The disciples came to Jesus and asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

Jesus replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

***

I think I need to work on my faith.

When my faith is strong enough I’ll be able to tell a school of fish to move from the ocean to my dinner plate.

Strange New Plants

Bongo sniffing a pink thing in the groundIt’s been hot here, and very dry until the last few days.

The wildflowers we had in the spring are gone. We’ll probably have a few more in the fall, but for now things are looking pretty bleak.

At least I thought they were bleak.

But there have been some really strange things showing up on my trails lately.

Like the pink flower in my trail’s parking lot.

I’ve never seen anything like it before.

It almost looks like a miniature firework that burst on the ground and never made it into the air.

I wonder what kind of flower this is – or if I’ll see any more of them.

I might have to get my person to search it out on the internet. Sometimes she finds the names of plants on my trails there.

This pink flower isn’t the only strange plant I’ve found on my trails lately.

Some plants must really like the heat of summer.

I haven’t figured out though if this other thing is a flower or a fruit.

I found it growing on a bush, right next to the trail.

Native American looking thing in a bush

I wonder what kind of bush the internet would say this is.

Puddle Invasion

Bongo near a small puddleA few days ago I was walking on my trails minding my own business when I saw something that surprised me.

My puddle had come back!

Well, half my puddle anyway. But my puddle has been missing for months and months.

I don’t know where it disappears to, but it does that a lot.

It just gets up and leaves. And then it shows up again when it feels like it.

***

So the next day I was really curious.

Would my puddle still be there, or not?

I found the strangest thing when I got to the puddle spot.

My puddle was still there…

tadpoles in the puddle

but it had been invaded.

Dozens of tiny tadpoles filled my puddle.

Swimming, wriggling, and darting all over the place.

I tried to stomp them out…

Bongo's foot in the water with the tadpoles

but there were far too many of them.

They filled every little bit of my puddle.

***

I went back the next day not knowing what to expect.

And you know what I found?

Bongo and a dried up puddle

No puddle, no tadpoles, nothing.

My puddle had fled and taken the tadpoles with it.

I thought I might find one or two tadpoles wriggling around in the dirt, but there were none.

***

Then today when I went back I found the puddle again. Even bigger than before.

Bongo in a puddle

But the tadpoles were nowhere in sight.

I have enough trouble trying to figure out where my puddle goes when it leaves…

But where in the world would a puddle take tadpoles?

Morning Treat

Bongo on the runFor the second day in a row I took my person for a walk in the morning – before that nasty thunder starts showing up.

And I’m finding there are extra benefits to going on walks this time of day.

Not only is it calmer and quieter – with no wind and no booming thunder – but this is the time that some of my friends are taking their people for walks.

.

.

Layla

Like my girlfriend Layla.

I hadn’t seen Layla in a long time and it was great fun romping around with her.

But since it had been so long she seemed to be a little shy at first.

Bongo giving Layla a nose kiss

I had to start out with a gentle nose kiss.

But soon Layla warmed up to me again.

And I got some really good loves.

Bongo getting loves from Layla

Woo woo!

Changing the Time

Bongo behind a bunch of bushesMy person finally figured it out. If we go on our trail walk in the morning there’s no thunder.

And it’s quiet – and peaceful.

This morning there was no wind to blow the smells away. I had a great time exploring and finding new smells.

Of course my person – like usual – kept dragging me away from all the good smells.

And then my person – like usual – wouldn’t go on a longer walk.

The same old routine.

Well, I guess it wasn’t really. We went at a different time of day.

Usually this time of year we go in the evening – when the sun is getting low.

But the thunder has been rumbling then too.

Hey person, I don’t need this thunder thing on anymore.

I’m brave now. See, there’s nothing here to scare me.

You need to get up early every morning for our walks.

That way you can get your exercise.

Wait! What do you mean, you want your exercise now?

I’ll just be a few more minutes here.

Bongo sniffing behind bushes

What do you think walks are for anyway?
