Houdini

HoudiniWe had an uneventful walk on my trails today and I was really worried. I didn’t know what I was going to write about for my blog. No lost people on the trails, no strange objects, no nothing.

We were back at the trailhead, almost to the parking lot when we found him. He came running over to greet me and we had a great time playing. There was a family starting out on the trail and we thought he belonged to them, but they went on – and he didn’t.

Two more people headed to their car so he must belong to them. They got in their car – and he didn’t.

Oh, no. Does he belong to us? We’re the only ones left here.

My person and I went home and he followed us – right into the house. We had a great time playing. The only other dog friend I have that likes to play with me is my girlfriend Lucy.

I got so excited I dumped all the water out of my dish and turned the kitchen into a slip-n-slide, but when I wasn’t looking my person found out who my new friend is. His name is Houdini.

I’ve been called Houdini before – right after I jumped over the fence. I guess now I’ve finally met the real Houdini.

Services for a Fee

Bongo with the kids from New YorkTwo days in a row! Do people think I’m a guide dog or something? I think I’m going to start up a business. And I’m going to charge a hefty fee for my services.

You know what I’m going to make those people pay me? Loves. Lots and lots of loves. If you don’t give me loves, you don’t get any directions. You can stay lost on my trails. I bet when I come back and find the same people the next day they’ll be willing to give me all the loves I want.

Today I found some kids on my trails that were really lost. I’m not sure how they found their way here, but they came all the way from Westchester, New York. My person says that’s a long way from here.

Those kids gave me lots of loves so I let my person give them directions. She couldn’t give them directions all the way back to New York, but she told them how to get to the top of Sugarloaf. There’s a good view from there. Maybe when they get to the top they’ll be able to see New York and then they can find their way home.

Actually, I wouldn’t mind if they’re still lost on my trails tomorrow because then I can charge them another fee. Lots and lots more loves.

Who’s Lassie?

LassieOn my trails today I met a family. They were very nice and they gave me loves. My person and I walked on and then headed back home on a different trail.

We were walking along, minding our own business, when we noticed someone following us. Not many people use the trail we were on so it’s unusual to find somebody following us. Well, the people caught up with us and guess what! It was that family again. The one that had given me loves.

They were lost. They didn’t know how to get back to their car, so they decided they would follow me.

I felt pretty cool about that, but then they started calling me Lassie.

Lassie? Who’s Lassie? Don’t they know my name is Bongo? They should know that. After all, I’m famous.

My person had to explain who Lassie is and she found a picture of Lassie for me. Hey, wait a minute! Lassie looks like my friends the Collies. I don’t look like Lassie at all.

It’s a good thing I helped that family find their way back to their car. They were really confused. If it hadn’t been for me they might still be walking in circles on my trails.

Listen to the Story

Jesus resurrected and Mary Magdalene

My person said I have to stay really quiet and listen because the Easter story is very important. I’ll try, person.

My person says that Jesus was crucified on the cross. That must have hurt.

Yes, I’m listening, person. I still don’t get why he was crucified though.

So God can’t look on sin and we all have it? Even me? Not me.

Well yeah, I do that but… I do that too, but it’s not my fault.

Jesus is the only one qualified to take all our sins upon himself and he had to die on the cross to do it? So God can look at us because Jesus took our sin for us? It’s a free gift from him?

We have to do what? Ask for that free gift? That’s all? That sounds really simple.

So what does that have to do with Easter?

Jesus didn’t stay dead? How could that happen?

My person says that after Jesus died he was buried in a tomb and a very large stone was rolled in front of it. On Sunday morning Mary Magdalene and some other women went to the tomb. They didn’t know how they would move the stone, but when they got there they found it had already been rolled away.

Mary ran to Peter and John, two of Jesus’ disciples, and told them someone had taken Jesus and they didn’t know where he was.

Peter and John ran to the tomb and found nothing inside but the linen and burial cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus. They didn’t understand what was happening and they went home.

Mary Magdalene stayed there and stood outside the tomb crying. She looked into the tomb and saw two angels sitting where Jesus had been.

Person, you didn’t tell me there were angels in the story.

I’m really listening, person.

The angels asked Mary why she was crying and she said they had taken her Lord away and she didn’t know where they had put him.

Mary turned around and saw a man standing there. She thought it was the gardener.

A gardener? Does he grow good stuff to eat?

I’m sorry person. I couldn’t help myself. You made me think about food.

Okay. The man asked Mary why she was crying and who she was looking for.

Mary said to the man that if he had carried Jesus away could he please tell her where he had put him and she would go get him.

The man then said one word to her. “Mary.” She immediately recognized that it was Jesus.

But person, you just told me Jesus died on the cross. How could that be him?

He did? God raised him from the dead? And Mary was the first one to see him?

Do you think I could see him too?

What’s in the Bag?

Scratchy checking out a bagScratchy, what did you find? Is that what I think it is? Come on Scratchy, tell me what you’ve got.

Scratchy, if you don’t tell me I’m going to tell my our person that you’re getting into her bag.

Scratchy getting into the bag

There must be some really good stuff in there. What are those different colored things?

Oh, I know what those are. Scratchy, you’re going to get into real trouble if you don’t leave those alone.

You know what those are? They’re the eggs that belong to the Easter Bunny. I was looking everywhere for that bunny’s stash the other day and I couldn’t find it. How did you find it?

Scratchy, the Easter Bunny is supposed to hide those eggs for me us on Easter morning so we can have an egg hunt. If you don’t give those eggs back to that bunny how are we going to have an Easter egg hunt?

You’d better give those eggs to me Scratchy. I know where that bunny lives – well, sort of. I saw him on my trails.

Scratchy, are you listening to me? Come on, Scratchy. My person is taking me for a walk soon. I can find that bunny and give the eggs back.

Scratchy, stop guarding those eggs!

I’m Not Shy

Plane with BannerWhen I take my person takes me for walks she never lets me run up and greet people. I’m not sure why. People always love me and I just love to give them lots of slobbery kisses. When we’re on my trails and people come toward us she pulls me aside until they pass. She only lets me greet them if they ask first.

Today we were on the trails and two people came toward us. My person pulled me off to the side and for a moment my head turned the way she was pulling me – toward the side of the trail and away from the people.

The lady must have seen my head turn and she said something about me being shy. I had no idea what that word meant and I had to ask my person.

Are you serious? It means that? I’m not shy.

Hey lady, you must be confused. I tried to run after that lady and set her straight – and maybe give her lots of slobbery kisses to prove it – but my person wouldn’t let me.

How am I going to let that lady know? Maybe I could rent an airplane. You know, the kind with the words hanging out the back? I could have a big banner flying behind the airplane that says “Bongo’s Not Shy!!!” Then to really prove it, I could jump out of the airplane with a parachute.

On second thought, I think I’ll just keep walking along the trails with my person.

Riley’s Rocks

RileyMy person did it again. She went off and left me and found another dog to take pictures of. I think I’m going to fix my person’s camera so it only takes a picture when I’m in it.

My person said she didn’t mean to find a dog. She said she wasn’t looking for another dog. She just happened to find one. I’m not sure if I believe her.

She said she was walking with some friends in a strange neighborhood. Any neighborhood that isn’t mine is strange – and I don’t know what my person was doing walking somewhere other than my trails.

She said she just happened to see Riley standing next to his sign and she said it was too good not to take a picture.

I guess that wouldn’t have been so bad, her taking a picture and all – but you know what she did then? She went onto Riley’s rocks and said hi to him. She didn’t have to do that.

My person did say that Riley was very interested in checking me out. I guess my person does love me. She takes me everywhere even when she leaves me at home.

I think next time though, I’d better go with my person for real and teach Riley how to jump that electric fence.

Whose Dish is it Anyway?

Scratchy and Bongo at the Water DishScratchy is such a copycat. Whenever I go drink water out of my dish he’s right there waiting so he can drink water out of my dish too. He has his own, but for some reason he likes mine better.

Check this out. As soon as I leave my dish he’s right in there drinking out of it.

Bongo Leaving the Water Dish

Well, maybe not right there. He’s a little slow in the uptake sometimes.

Scratchy at the Water Dish

There, see. Right there drinking out of my water dish. It’s a good thing he doesn’t drink much. If he did I could die of thirst before my person got around to filling up my dish again.

I’m a little tired of Scratchy always doing this though. Always hanging around me. Always drinking out of my water dish. Next time he tries it I think I’m going to have a little surprise planned for him.

Bongo going after Scratchy

Hey Scratchy! You get in my water dish – I get in your face.

Another Sign of Spring

Bongo and the Missing PuddleThere’s something missing here. I know it was here yesterday, so where is it? What happened to it?

My puddle is missing. Yeah, I know it has been getting smaller the last few days, but I didn’t think it would go away. It got all filled up after that big snow we just had. I didn’t think it would leave so fast.

Where did it go? Maybe it went where the snow creatures go when all the snow goes away. I wonder if that puddle could find them. They went away awhile ago.

Oh, no! I hope that puddle didn’t get lost. If it’s lost it might not ever find its way back here. I would be very sad if my puddle never came back. Maybe I should go looking for it.

Person, can we go looking for my puddle? But I don’t even know which direction to go. It left without a trace. I don’t see a drop of water anywhere.

What? I might have to wait until it rains again, person? But that won’t do me any good. Then there will be water everywhere and I still won’t know which direction to go to look for my puddle.

Signs of Spring

Ant HillI just saw one of the first signs of spring. Yeah, I know. Flowers have been coming out. We already have little purple ones, white ones, and yellow ones blooming. Oh yeah, those orange-red Indian Paintbrush too. Some trees have already blossomed and others are starting to get leaves on them. But that’s not what I was thinking about.

The ants have shown up again. They’ve pushed the dirt out of their holes and they’re keeping busy looking for food. I guess they sleep all winter and work really, really hard the rest of the year.

I’m not sure if I’d like that. If I slept all winter I’d miss playing in the snow – and the mud. And then I’d have to work very hard the rest of the year to make up for it. No naps – just work, work, work.

And I bet none of those ants have a person who helps them write a blog. So even if they did have fun nobody would know about it. And just think – if they tried to play ball they would get squished under it.

I’m sure glad God made me a dog.
