You Call That Snow?

Bongo and a dusting of snowI have been waiting almost three months for some snow to play in. That’s how long it’s been since we had some. So I was really excited when my person told me the weather person said we should have snow overnight.

Yippee! Lots of fluffy, slippery white stuff to play in. I don’t even care if it’s cold. It’s so much fun. My favorite thing to do is drag my Frisbee around in it. It slides so much better in snow than it does in the dirt.

Well, this morning my person got up and let me outside, and what did I see? My yucca plants looked whiter. There was a little snow on the stairs. But on the ground – nothing, nada, kaput.

Somebody needs to talk to that weather person. How am I supposed to play in the snow if there’s none on the ground? This doesn’t even make sense. What good is snow if you can’t play in it? Why would it even bother coming if it’s not going to stick around and get deep?

Weather person, you’re just not doing your job. Next time you send snow you’ve got to send more of it. And if you don’t do that, I’m going to ask for a new weather person.

Detective Dog at Work

Bongo near some containers on a rockHey person, what’s that stuff?

It’s a what? A gas can and a container for chain saw lubricant? By why would someone leave those on my trails?

You’re supposed to know that, person. Don’t you know everything?

Then that means I have another mystery to solve. There seem to be a lot of mysterious things happening on my trails.

I think it means somebody took a chain saw out on my trails. But why?

What if they’re planning to cut down trees and steal them? I’d better keep an eye out for people carrying logs. They’d be easy to spot because they’d have a chain saw too.

Or maybe they’re scared of wild animals and brought a chain saw with them to defend themselves. I’d better warn all those mountain lions and javelina to stay away from those guys. Don’t attack the guy with the chain saw.

Oh no – what if – what if somebody watched too many scary movies and now they’re lurking on my trails with a chainsaw? Stay behind me person. I’d better protect you just in case.

Hey person, look at this. All the gas leaked out of the gas can. Those people who think they’re going to cause all that trouble with the chainsaw are going to be disappointed. They can’t start it because it’s missing all its gas.

Not My Fault

Bongo Heading Back on the TrailHey person, you’re going the wrong way. This way takes us back home sooner. We can take this trail.

You’re what? You’re not limping. Let’s go for a longer walk.

What do you mean, it’s my fault?

You could have let me off my leash yesterday so I could get to my swimming hole faster. So it was your fault. You didn’t let me off my leash.

Or you could have run down that steep trail. That way I wouldn’t have been pulling you.

I can’t help it if you started slipping on those loose rocks on that steep trail. I bet you would have slipped even if I wasn’t pulling you.

So I’m getting blamed and punished. Just because we got to go on a long hike yesterday you’re making me have a shorter walk today. No fair!

Oh look person. It’s my friend Timmy. Can I go over and say hi to him?

What? You mean if we had gone on our normal walk I wouldn’t have seen Timmy today? Yeah, I guess you’re right.

Timmy and Bongo

But person, he kissed me. And he’s not even a cute girl.

Swimming Again

Bongo in the 4RunnerThis morning we got into the 4Runner and I wasn’t sure where we were going, but last time we got in it we had lots of fun, so I was excited. We drove for awhile and then we stopped. No long trip on bumpy roads. I guess we weren’t headed for that fun place we went to last time. We got out of the 4Runner and guess who I found there. My little friend who was at my house the other day. Maybe I can go on the trails with him again. And my little friend’s parents were there too. We were in a parking lot, but that was okay because I was with friends. But then my person walked away. Was she deserting me? Oh man, I was worried. Oh here she comes. No problem person. I knew you were coming back.

We got back in the 4Runner and went for a ways on some bumpy roads. And then we got out again. Hey, I know this place. My swimming hole is down there. Let’s go.

Bongo Wrapped Around a Post

I got so excited I wrapped myself around a post.

First Water on the Trail

There’s a swimming hole here. What do you mean that’s not the one?

Bongo Carrying a Log

I’ve got a stick. Could somebody throw it for me?

People Crossing the Creek

I’m not sure why you’re making such a big deal about crossing the creek.

Bongo Crossing the Creek

See, it’s easy.

Swimming Hole

Yay. We finally made it to my swimming hole.

Bongo Shaking Off

Just a little shake. Anybody else wet?

Bongo and Another Dog

I met a few dogs, but I didn’t really care. I’d gone after my younger person. He was cutting a new stick for me.

Bongo with a Stick in his Mouth

Come on person. Throw the stick for me.

Bongo Going After a Big Log

Everybody started eating lunch and they wouldn’t throw sticks for me anymore. I didn’t care about eating. I only wanted to fetch sticks. I guess I’ll have to get my own stick.

Little Friend, Bongo, and a Stick

My Little Friend couldn’t throw the sticks very far, but at least he tried.

Little Friend and Bongo on the Trail

I’m not ready to head back yet.

Bongo Getting One More Swim

Yippee! They let me go in for one last swim.

Hidden in a Cave

Landscape with David at the Cave of Adullam

Person, what do you mean you’re not going to tell me the story of those other sheep? You promised.

Well, I figured you meant you’d tell me that story next. I don’t want to wait.

Okay, I’ll listen. But this better be good.

My person says that after David escaped from King Saul, King Saul chased him around the countryside because he still wanted to kill him. For a time David hid in the cave of Adullam and his family and lots of men joined him there. The men that joined him did not have the best of character. They were the distressed, indebted, and the discontent. Person, I’m not sure what all those words mean.

Okay, I’ll listen.

My person says that David became the leader of all those men that have words with D in them. He even straightened some of them out.

How did he do that, person?

He what? He did? My person says that one of the things David did was to set a good example for the men. I set good examples. I could straighten out those men.

One of the times that King Saul was chasing David he went into a cave to relieve himself. This was not any cave. It happened to be the cave that David and his men were in. They were far back in it so King Saul didn’t see them.

While King Saul was doing his business, David crept up on him and…

He didn’t kill him? But any normal person would kill someone who was out to kill them. After all, it’s self defense.

Do you believe it? David didn’t kill King Saul. Instead he cut off the corner of his robe. Then he felt guilty for even doing that, because King Saul was the Lord’s anointed.

So David went out of the cave and told King Saul what he had done. He said he’d done nothing against King Saul and wouldn’t. David gave it to the Lord to avenge the wrongs King Saul had done to him.

Person, I think the Lord is more powerful than David. I wouldn’t want Him after me. So what happened to King Saul? Something really nasty?

What do you mean, that’s another story? I would think he’d get struck down right there.

He did? King Saul left? But he went after David again later?

I don’t get it. I think I’ll gather up my dog buddies and go after King Saul right now. See you later.

Little Friend’s Visit

Bongo's Little FriendI was so excited waiting for my little friend to come over today. He hadn’t come here for a visit in a very long time. This was going to be a great play day.

Here he comes, person. Here he comes!

What? Wait a minute. He walked right past me and gave Scratchy loves.

Bongo's Little Friend with Scratchy

Now he’s playing with my younger person and they’re totally ignoring me.

They even let Scratchy play with the train. Hey, what about me?

Scratchy Watching the Train

I got so upset I tore up my squeaky reindeer.

Bongo's Torn up Reindeer

My little friend wouldn’t even share his food with me. And I sat so pretty for him.

Bongo Waiting for Food

Then we went out on my trails. My trails, mind you. I’d better not be ignored on my trails.

Bongo Getting Loves from his Little Friend

I’m in heaven now. My little friend gave me some loves on my trails.

Distractions

Bongo's drool on the stairsYou see that mark there? On the stairs? You know what that is? That’s a sign of dog abuse. That’s what it is.

Here’s what happened.

Every morning when I get my person out of bed she makes me go outside before she’ll feed me. That’s bad enough right there. I think she should feed me first.

Sometimes when I go outside I get distracted by things, smells and stuff – like maybe Bubba, the cat from across the street snuck into my yard overnight – and I don’t head back into the house when my person thinks I should.

You know what she does? She goes back in the house without me and shuts the door in my face.

Okay person, I’ll change that if you insist. The door isn’t really shut in my face because I’m still out in the yard sniffing.

But then I hear it. The sound of my food bouncing into my bowl. And I come running, drooling as I go. Let me in, person!

You know what she does then? She takes her time and won’t let me in right away. She feeds Scratchy, she gets a drink of water, and finally she moseys on over to the door. In the meantime I’ve lost about a gallon of water – it’s dripping out of my mouth while I wait for food.

When she does let me in I race to my dish and gobble my breakfast. Okay, I’m feeling better now.

But if it happens again, I’m turning my person in.

In a Relationship

Bongo and LucyHey person, I’ve got a new girlfriend and she’s really cute. Her name’s Lucy. Where’s that Facebook page you promised me? I need to put down that I’m in a relationship.

What? You don’t think I should put that relationship thing on Facebook? Of course I should. I can tell she really likes me.

What do you mean, she might just want to be friends? Of course she wants to be friends. She used to be kind of afraid to come near me, but now she plays with me when we see each other. And she’s really cute, person. Oh yeah, did I remember to tell you how cute she is?

Well yeah, I know you know what she looks like. I just want to make sure you know she’s cute. So what about that Facebook page?

Seriously!? I have a Facebook page now? Oh, I hope Lucy “Likes” me on Facebook. Oh no! Person what if she doesn’t “Like” me? That could be really bad. Maybe you’d better get rid of that Facebook page.

Did They Give You Loves?

Bongo's Head in the Cat CageScratchy, what are you doing in there? Did you get to go to the vet today?

Did you have a good time?

You didn’t like it? Why not? Didn’t they give you treats?

No treats!? I got lots of treats at the vet. How come you didn’t get any treats?

Well, did they give you loves?

Scratchy Held by the Vet

No loves either? I don’t get it. When I went to the vet I got lots of treats and loves.

You did what!!!? You attacked my our person?

They wrapped you in a towel and poked things into you?

Scratchy Wrapped in a Towel

Scratchy, they poked some things in me too, but the treats and loves made up for it.

Then they what? They picked you up with leather gloves and held you down?

You kicked and hissed and scratched and tried to give them what for?

Scratchy, I thought I was pretty tough – but I guess you’re the toughest.

I think I’m going to let you keep being the toughest – because, you know why. When you chase all those people away with your claws and your teeth and your toughness, they’re going to come to me with all the loves.

Just keep on being tough, Scratchy.

Where’s the Vandal?

Cairn Knocked Over

This is wrong. This is totally wrong. Someone knocked down the trail marker. Now people are going to get lost on the trails. They’ll go the wrong way.

I’d better investigate. Maybe I can find some clues.

Bongo Checking the Knocked Over Cairn

No unusual smells here.

This one here is still standing, but there’s something strange about it.

Bongo Checking Out Cairn

Look. A clue. What is it person?

A tent bag? You mean the guilty culprit camped out here?

Bongo Checking the Clue

This one’s still standing, but it’s starting to lean over.

Bongo Checking the Leaning Over Cairn

Oh look! Another one down.

Bongo Checking Another Downed Cairn

I think they went that a way.

Bongo Looking Past the Downed Cairn

Hey person. I think I found something. I’ve never seen tracks like this on my trails before.

Horse Shoe Prints

I think this is it. Now I’ve just got to figure out what kind of creature has feet like this.

I know one thing for sure. If I find a creature that went the wrong way, has strange looking feet, and is hanging out inside a dome tent, he’s the guilty one for sure.
