Big BoomTheory

Big BoomThis is a really true mystery. I’m not the only one looking into this, but I think I need my Detective Dog hat for sure. They’re gonna need my help.

Here’s what happened…

A couple of days ago my person and I were on our walk on my trails like we do every day. Nothing unusual was happening. It was a nice day and we met lots of dogs and people.

We were headed back toward home when all of a sudden…       it happened.

A big loud boom! It sounded like thunder.

And then there was another boom, right behind the first one.

I was scared. Those of you who have been my friends for awhile know that I don’t like thunder at all.

But my person told me that it couldn’t possibly be thunder because there were no thunder clouds in the sky.

What does she know? It sure sounded like thunder.

Anyway, I was really glad to get back home and safe inside my house.

                                                ***

Well, yesterday my person found out something about those big, loud booms.

You know what she found out? She found out that nobody knows what they are.

And just to prove that I’m not getting some strange kind of thunder fear syndrome left over from all the storms we had last summer I’m going to share the articles my person found about those booms.

Here’s an article from the Verde Independent and here’s another one from CBS 5 News.

I’m heading out now to offer my help with this investigation, so if I don’t come back by tomorrow —could somebody please bring me some earplugs?

Jet Trails

Sedona Sunset with Jet TrailMy trails are not the highest trails around. They’re underneath another set of trails. Jet trails.

Lots of jets fly over my trails. You can see where the setting sun is lighting up one of the  jet trails in the top of this picture.

Usually those jets don’t bother me – I hardly notice them at all. Except when it’s cloudy outside. I guess they figure that I can’t see them, and they want to make sure I know they’re there anyway. So they turn up their jet noise, and it sounds a lot like thunder.

When that happens I have to calm my person down. She gets all excited when she thinks it’s thunder, and I’m afraid she’s going to grab me by the leash and drag me home. I have to convince her that it’s not thunder at all.

But there are a few of those flying things that don’t seem to understand that they have to stay on the trails. I get in trouble if I wander off the trail. Shouldn’t all the flying things stay on their trails too?

Helicopter and Cloud Buildups

This one looks like it’s having a race with the clouds. I’m not sure who’s going to win, but I bet if that flying thing stayed in the jet trails the clouds wouldn’t have a chance.

Biplane and Contrail

I can see the jet trail in this picture and this flying thing is way off of it. Actually, I think this flying thing lost its way in time too. There must be a time warp somewhere in those jet trails, and I bet this flying thing popped out of it and got confused.

Hot Air Balloon

Wait a minute! This one looks like it’s trying to come down and steal my trails. I hope someone tells these flying things that if they want to be flying things, they’ve got to fly.

A New Kind of Mischief

Bongo on the trail looking at blue skyCheck me out! Do I look different? Suave and debonair in my black and white?

All summer – at least since the beginning of July – I’ve had to wear my anxiety vest almost all the time. This has been the worst thunder season I can remember. My person has been around a lot longer than me and she says it’s the worst she can remember.

But it’s over! Yippee! Check out that blue sky. Not a cloud in it. And this picture was taken in the afternoon when most of the clouds build up.

I just have one problem now. Thunder season is when I get into the most mischief – at least when I’m left alone in the house.

I’m going to have to come up with a new kind of mischief. And I’ve got the perfect thing.

Since we’ve had so much rain there are lots of green juicy weeds on my trails.

Bongo Eating Weeds

Bongo Eating Weeds

My person doesn’t like waiting around while I stop to chomp. Actually, she doesn’t even like me to eat those weeds. She says I have plenty of food at home.

I don’t agree. The more food I can find the better.

So when my person tries to get me back on the trails, I’m digging in.

How’s that for mischief?

Blue’s not a Blessing

Blue SkyYou see that picture there? You know what that is? It’s the most beautiful blue sky I’ve ever seen. And you know why it’s so beautiful? Because I haven’t seen a sky like this since thunder season started. This sky has no clouds in it. And no clouds means no thunder.

But somehow this cloudless sky worked against me. Because my person saw this blue sky too, and she decided that since there was no thunder she didn’t have to stay home and protect me from it.

And she left.

And she didn’t take me with her.

She went somewhere with a swimming hole. I’ve never gotten to go swimming with the ducks before.

Ducks on the Creek

I’m not sure where my person went, but she was gone so long I think she went all the way to Mexico. I thought maybe if I looked at the pictures in her camera I could figure out where she did go – and now I have proof that she went to Mexico.

Gomez

When I quizzed my person about the pictures in her camera she said this dog is named Gomez.

And then I found a picture of my buddy Pablo. Pablo was born in Mexico. I haven’t seen him in a long time so he must have gone back there.

Pablo

My person says she didn’t get anywhere close to Mexico, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

Next time person, you’d better hide your camera.

That’s as Far as I Go

Bongo resisting the leashThat does it! I’m not going any further. We’re going back.

I’m not one to shorten a walk on my trails, but enough is enough. You wouldn’t believe what my person did. We’ve been having that rumbly thunder stuff all afternoon and I’ve been curled up in my hallway hiding under my blanket. But then you know what my person did? She made me go outside and that thunder stuff was louder out there. I mean, it boomed.

I did need to go outside so I didn’t argue at first but we could have gone back in the house instead of heading out to my trails. I tried to get away from it

.

.

Stretched leash over the trail

but it was everywhere.

So I finally had to dig in and put my foot down.

And then we still had to go back through it.

Bongo hurrying down the trail

I hurried as fast as my person would let me.

Bongo checking for thunder

But I did have to stop and check where that thunder was coming from.

Once I reached my yard I pulled my person into the house.

I’m now safe and snug inside my hallway under my blanket.

Bongo in the hall under his blanket

But I still wish that thunder would leave.

P.S. I take no credit for those dings at the end of my hallway. They were all caused by old thunderstorms.

Thunder Mischief

Bongo looking toward the thunderI cannot believe the mischief my person was up to this weekend. On Sunday afternoon we had one of those nasty thunderstorms. It kept getting louder and louder and then finally – craackk!!! – the lightning and the thunder came at the same time – right over the house. It was the loudest thunder in history!

My person took me outside after that and I was glad to get out of the house where that loud noise hit.

I took care of business and got some loves from my neighbor, and then you know what my person did?

She drug me back into the house. That’s where the loud noise came from. I don’t want to go back in there.

And then a little while later my person did it again. She took me outside for a walk and now the thunder was rumbling on my trails.

Thunder Clouds over Sedona

I wish my person would let me stay where the thunder isn’t.

It wasn’t too bad at first because we were going away from the thunder. But then my person started getting really mischievous. She wanted to head back. I didn’t like that direction at all. Come on person, let’s keep going this direction.

Bongo Heading Away from the Thunder

Finally we made it back home. The thunder’s outside now so I’m heading in. But what I really wish is that my person would stop her mischief and figure out how to turn the thunder off.

I guess until she does I’ll bury myself under this blanket.

Church Dog

Bongo Looking InnocentI got into so much mischief on Saturday that my person had to take me to church. She made me sit quietly when there were all kinds of people to get loves from. I didn’t like it one bit.

My person left the house early on Saturday morning. She does that sometimes. Then my younger person got out of bed and he left the house too. Now it was just me and Scratchy. Scratchy never wants to play so I decided to take a nap.

Everything was going along fine until I heard it. Rain pounding down on the roof and then the most horrible of sounds. The loud clap of thunder right nearby.

I tried hiding in my person’s closet but it didn’t feel safe enough so I tried to get into the closet at the end of the hallway. I tried really hard, but I couldn’t get the door open. I decorated it though. It has a really pretty pattern on it now.

Patterned Damaged Door

Finally, I heard my person’s car pull up. I went to the door and put on my innocent face. I hoped she wouldn’t look in the hallway. She had a couple friends with her so I figured I was safe.

Oops, she looked. I’m in trouble now.

My person put on my leash and everyone got in the car. Me too. When we got out again my person said we were at the church she hangs out at a lot. I’ve never been there before so I made her take my picture with her friends, to prove I was a church dog now.

Bongo and Friends

But then she did it. This was the most horrible punishment for getting in trouble. Having to sit quietly by my person with all those people I could have gotten loves from.

I don’t want to be a church dog anymore.

Terrible, Horrible, Awful Kind of Day

Holding Bongo from going outToday started out as one of those terrible, horrible, awful kind of days. The thunder started rumbling early. My person had made me leave my anxiety vest on all night and I think its effectiveness had worn off. They do that, don’t they?

So I was shaking away and hiding out in my safe spot in the hall when my person did it again. She left me – with all that thunder. I don’t know what she’s thinking. I would have run out with her but my younger person had hold of me and he wouldn’t let go. I’ve got to train him better.

Finally my person came back, but this time the thunder was still hanging around. Yesterday she managed to get rid of it, but I guess that thunder figured out how my person tricked it and wouldn’t fall for the same thing again.

I had to put up with that thunder for most of the afternoon but then my person said she hadn’t heard it for awhile and we were going for a walk.

I love walks, but I was still pretty nervous. I heard a sound coming from the sky and wanted to run back home but my person said it was just my friend Jet. I don’t know what Jet would be doing in the sky but my person does come up with crazy ideas sometimes.

My trails felt different. Not that dry, dusty feel like they’ve been for so long. They actually felt cool and moist under my feet.

And then I found it. My puddle had come back! Puddle, where have you been for so long? I missed you.

Bongo wading in the puddle

I kept looking for my friend Jet and I couldn’t find him anywhere. My person must have been making that up. I did find something else when I looked for him in the sky though.

A cloud painting.

Cloud Painting

Hey Jet, if you’re hanging around here anywhere could you please come out. I want to play.

Dressed for Thunder

Bongo Dressed for ThunderI can’t believe my person did that to me. The rumbles were starting up in the distance and I was getting pretty nervous. Then you know what she did? You’re not going to believe this.

She put on my anxiety vest and she left. She left me home with all that thunder – and it was getting louder.

I would have run out the door with my person but my younger person was still in the house and he grabbed me by the collar. He wouldn’t let me go until my person had gone out the door and closed it.

Then the thunder got really loud. I’m sure my person was trying to get away from it. She got in her car, so she probably drove to where that thunder couldn’t reach her.

But why didn’t she take me? It’s really not fair.

On top of that crashing thunder the rain started pounding down on the roof. I shivered and shook, all the time thinking of my person and how she’d gotten away from it without me.

Finally, everything got quiet.

And guess what. Here comes my person, driving up in her car.

Sure, person. It’s safe to come back now. The thunder’s gone. You were scared and ran off while I stuck it out here.

Next time person, you don’t need to run off. Just stick with me and I’ll protect you.

Strange Thunder

BongoThis morning I really thought the thunder season was upon me. It startled me out of my sleep. I woke up because some of the normal sounds in the house stopped. The fan that my younger person runs at night stopped running and he never gets up that time of the morning. The house was silent – except for a few unusual beeps that I don’t hear very often.

Then all of a sudden I heard a loud crack. I was convinced that thunder was on its way – ready to attack me at any minute.

I got up and tried to figure out how I would escape it if it made that sound again. By now it was beginning to smell too. An electrical kind of smell filled the air – way stronger than a regular thunderstorm. I really started getting worried.

Then the normal noises in our house returned – the loud crack didn’t come back – and the electric smell finally faded.

Whew!

My person said the loud crack sounded like a gunshot, but is also the sound a transformer makes sometimes when it blows.

Transformers? Aren’t transformers those robot things that change? Maybe it was a good thing that one of them blew up.
