Cracking Question

Bongo on the trailI headed down my trails when I noticed something terrible had happened.

Something disastrous.

I’m not sure what it was, but it must have been very disturbing.

Something so distressing that even the rocks were upset.

I tried to ask them what had happened but they couldn’t answer me.

.

You see, they had cracked.

Red rock cracked in two

Poor rocks.

I wonder if there’s a looney bin for rocks.

They need some special care.

I found one more rock to ask, but I’m not sure what was going on with this rock.

My question was totally serious – yes, I can be serious when I want to – but for some reason this rock thought I was being funny.

Or maybe it thought that I’m funny.

I hope it didn’t think I’m funny looking.

But anyway, when I tried to ask this rock what happened…

Red rock cracked into several pieces

it cracked up.

Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day

Bongo splashing the waterDo you know what today is?

It’s one of my favorite days.

Well, it’s going to be one of my favorite days. I didn’t know about this holiday last year.

Today is Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day.

I was really looking forward to splashing…

.

.

Bongo Getting One More Swim

Or maybe even swimming and splashing.

As long as I could get my people all wet.

But here’s what happened.

I went to my favorite puddle…

Bongo at the place where a puddle used to be

And it was gone!

Without my puddle how could I celebrate this special holiday?

So I talked my people into taking me on a new trail.

Bongo and his younger person on a trail

One that I’ve never been on before.

And I heard that it ended up at a creek.

So we wandered around and up and down and finally we ended up…

Bongo standing at the top of the world

At the top of the world!

I sat there with my younger person…

Bongo and his younger person looking at the view

And it didn’t seem like he was going to move.

Bongo and younger person sitting and looking at the view

I’ve got to figure something out – because now I know where the puddle is.

Bongo getting restless

And I’m going to find a way to get there.

Bongo looking the other way

Over there looks like a good place to start.

Bongo heading down the cliff

Yup, this way’s going to get me there.

Bongo part way down the cliff

Hey guys, this is the right way. Come on down here!

Bongo being made to climb back up

What do you mean, I’ve got to climb back up?

Bongo back on top

You’re missing the whole point.

I haven’t splashed in a puddle yet.

When are my people ever going to learn?

Not My Adventure

Bongo on the trail on a cloudy dayI headed up my trails as usual, minding my own business.

I’m always looking for some kind of adventure, but this time I found somebody else having an adventure.

I got really concerned because this person was way up high on Sugarloaf, the large, round, red rock hill next to my trails.

This person stood on a ledge and it looked like she was going to step off – right down a straight cliff.

If that person doesn’t have super sticky shoes and fingers she is going to fall right down to the bottom.

And then she did step off.

But she didn’t fall.

.

She kind of hung there, right in the middle of the cliff.

What kind of a trick is this? Can she fly?

Maybe she has super Jedi powers and she’s going to pop right back up to the ledge.

But none of that happened.

She didn’t fly, and she didn’t pop.

She slid.

Right down to the bottom.

Safely.

Oh wait a minute. I see it now.

She cheated.

Person rappelling down Sugarloaf

There’s  a rope hanging there.

Hey, that looks like fun.

Maybe if I drag my person up to that ledge she’ll let me slide down the rope.

Missing Person

Detective DogYesterday my investigation was a bust.

I guess even Detective Dog can’t be perfect all the time.

But today I have another investigation.

I’m sure I’ll get to the bottom of this one.

You see, there is a personless dog that sometimes runs around my neighborhood.

.

.

.

.

Brown dog near a road

All the dogs in my neighborhood have people that they take on walks with them, except this poor dog.

I really have to admire this dog though.

I mean, how many dogs would go on walks if it wasn’t for needing to give their people exercise?

Giving your people their exercise is such a good motivator, but this dog goes on walks by himself.

He even does some jogging.

Brown dog jogging

But where are this dog’s people? Why aren’t they letting him take them on walks?

That’s what I need to investigate.

I almost had an answer right from the dog’s mouth.

I saw him a ways off on my trails and then he started following me home.

I was all ready to befriend him. He really looks like he could use some friends.

But my person totally blew it for me.

Because every time she walks toward this dog he runs in the opposite direction.

Dog running away

My person is not doing a very good job.

I think I may have to fire her and hire myself a new assistant.

I bet this dog needs a job.

Trail Arrow

Bongo checking out a pointing rockHmmm. This is the place that my person has decided is our turnaround point.

We usually go out this far on my trails and then we head back when we get here.

Most of the time I want to keep going, but my person won’t let me.

She always has an excuse.

She’s too busy, or it’s too cold, or whatever else she can come up with.

She pulls that busy one most of the time though.

But there’s something different here today.

I’ve never seen this here before.

.

There’s an arrow here pointing further out on my trails.

That’s got to mean something.

Today’s the day we keep on trekking.

I’m following the arrow!

Bongo walking off in the direction the rock is pointing

Hey person, come on. This way!

What do you mean, what am I doing?

I’m following directions.

I’ve watched you driving before.

When there’s a sign pointing a certain way you follow it.

Well, there’s a sign pointing this way on my trails.

We have to follow it.

***

Person, I don’t believe it!

You’re going to ignore this sign and make me go back?

You know, you’re taking your chances.

I sure hope the trail police don’t find you and give you a ticket for failure to follow directions.

Flames on My Trails

Manzanita bush with sunlight shining through loose barkThis is terrible!

Someone is trying to burn down my trails.

I walked around a corner and found this Manzanita bush on fire.

What am I going to do?

My puddle is a long ways away and there’s no other water around to put this fire out with.

I couldn’t bear it if my trails burned down.

How would I have any adventures if there was nothing left but black char?

Maybe if I blow on it hard enough and kick up enough dirt the fire will go out.

.

Manzanita bush with sunlight shining through loose bark

Oh no! There’s more fire here.

I’ll never be able to get it all out in time.

Run for it!

Call 911!

Do you think they have a fire truck that’s skinny enough to drive down my trails?

Manzanita bush with sunlight shining through loose bark

Hey, wait a minute.

These bushes are on fire but they’re not burning up.

This is kind of like the burning bush that Moses saw.

Maybe God lit this fire to remind us of Christmas.

You know, Jesus being born and all that?

I’m not sure about God’s color choice though.

Shouldn’t these bushes be burning in red and green?

I guess you never know about God. He seems to have a mind of His own.

Manzanita bush with sunlight shining through loose bark

Hey person, I think we’re doing it all wrong.

You’ve got to take down all those red and green lights on our house and put up orange ones.

Where are My Jingle Bells?

Bongo and Toby checking each other outI came across my buddy Toby on my trails today.

But there was something different about him.

Toby smelled the same.

But he sounded different.

I don’t get it.

Dogs might change their smell, but they don’t change their sound.

.

Toby on the trail

Toby, what’s going on?

Give it to me straight.

You what?

Toby with bells on

You’re wearing jingle bells?

Hey, wait a minute!

How come I don’t have jingle bells?

This is Christmas time. Shouldn’t all dogs be wearing jingle bells this time of year?

Bongo looking jealous of Toby's jingle bells

I’m so jealous Toby.

But wait a minute.

Don’t those jingle bells make it hard to do certain things?

You know, like sneaking up on that cat you live with.

Or stealing treats when no one is watching.

Toby, I’m not sure it’s such a good idea to be wearing those bells.

As a matter of fact…

Bongo looking proud and Toby looking kind of sad

I’m glad I’m not wearing jingle bells.

Just think of all the mischief you’re missing out on Toby.

What, person? What am I doing?

What do you mean, Toby was proud of his jingle bells and now I’m making him feel bad?

I should what!? Apologize?

That word’s not in my vocabulary.

I’m what!?

Oh, alright.

Bongo looking like he's apologizing to Toby

Sorry Toby.

Those really are cool jingle bells.

Erasure

Bongo looking under a rockToday there wasn’t a single car parked by my trails.

This doesn’t happen very often.

I had to check under the rocks to make sure there were no cars hiding there.

But there weren’t.

And we didn’t see any people or dogs on my trails either.

I don’t know what happened to everybody.

But I think they were all erased.

Because I caught somebody in the act. Somebody trying to erase my rocks too, and they hadn’t finished yet.

Cloud covered rocks in the distance

Red rocks covered in clouds

I’d better be careful so nobody erases me.

Because my trails are extra fun today.

For some reason there are more puddles than usual.

Bongo looking at a puddle

I love splashing through all the puddles – and tasting them too.

And today I found something really unusual.

I hope they weren’t behind all that erasing, because I’ve never seen anything quite like them on my trails.

Maybe they’re here checking out what’s happening, and they’re here to help.

But what if they’re the cause of the erasures?

I think I’d better keep my distance.

Bubbles on red rocks

Watch out everybody.

Stay away from those bubbles!

The Aliens are Gone?

Stacked RocksYesterday I told you about a spot on my trails that I couldn’t investigate because it was guarded by aliens.

So I had to check out other parts of my trails to see if I could find any clues as to who those aliens were.

I found a clue, but I didn’t get to the bottom of my investigation.

Well, today the aliens were gone and I was able to make a direct investigation of that spot.

.

.

Bongo near a stacked rock

Hmmm. That’s a strange looking rock up there.

Definitely looks like it belongs to aliens.

I’ll have to investigate further.

Bongo sniffing a rock

Here’s another strange rock.

Let me see if I can sniff out any clues.

Bongo checking a stacked pile of rocks

A whole pile of rocks. Hmmm.

Bongo sniffing a rock

And another one.

Wait! Wait just a minute!

I’m sniffing something strange.

I think I may have figured this out.

Let me see if my theory is correct.

Bongo with his head against a standing rock

I don’t believe it!

I know what happened here.

These rocks are the aliens!

The aliens turned into solid rock.

I can’t even knock this one over.

Maybe if I water it it will come back to life.

Rock with a wet spot

Nope, that alien is still staying solid as a rock.

Bongo walking away from the rocks

I guess it’s safe to leave this spot.

These aliens aren’t going anywhere.

Finding Clues

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat onI’ve got some investigating to do.

I’ve seen bits and pieces of strange things on my trails the last few days so I’m going to start out right.

I’ve got my Detective Dog hat on already.

I’m ready to go.

So here’s what’s happening.

There’s a spot just off of one of my trails that has strange rocks piled up around a small clearing.

.

But my person won’t let me go investigate that spot because when we walk by there are people guarding it.

I’m not sure if they’re really people.

They’re probably aliens or something.

But since they’re guarding that place I’ve got to see if I can find some clues to what that place is somewhere else on my trails.

They had to get to that spot somehow, and that means they’ve probably left some evidence.

I’ve found some strange smells, but for some reason people won’t accept smells as evidence.

If they’d only improve their noses.

So I searched and searched for something my person could see.

And finally I found it.

Way off on a little side trail that hardly anyone ever uses, there it was.

Bongo by a pile of rocks and sticks

Whoever piled up those strange rocks in that other place must pile up rocks wherever they go.

Yup, they’ve been here alright.

Pile of rocks and sticks

Now that I know where they’ve been I’ve just got to figure out who they are.

But until I get to the bottom of this –

Don’t stop and talk to any aliens.
