After a Rain

Bongo trying to go down another trailEarlier today we had a bunch of thunder and some rain, but things had calmed down.

So my person and I decided to go for a walk.

Because of the rain everything smelled fresh and good, and the rain and clouds had cooled the air.

Rather than sweltering in the heat like we’ve been doing the last few days, it felt refreshing out in the cooler temperature.

This was turning into one of the best walks I’ve been on in a long time.

But then it happened.

First it was just a few drops of rain.

I can handle that.

But then I saw it.

A big flash of lightning.

And you know what comes after that.

Thunder!

I hate thunder. I’m deathly afraid of it.

Fortunately we were right at the beginning of a trail heading into the wash.

And it was the opposite direction of that thunder.

It’s a cool trail too, because you have to climb over big rocks when you get into the wash there.

But my person didn’t get it. She said we weren’t going that way.

I insisted.

Bongo refusing to budge

I lost.

But that thunder kept getting worse. And it came from the very direction we were headed.

My person says we have to go through this stuff to get home.

But I’m sure we can still get home if we head in another direction.

Bored with Berries

Manzanita BerriesLast year the prickly pear cactus on my trails had lots of fruit and my person decided to get brave and pick some and make things that were good to eat.

This year the prickly pear only had a few puny flowers so I don’t think there’s going to be much fruit.

.

.

.

But the Manzanita bushes are loaded with berries.

Manzanita bush with berries

And my person decided she was going to experiment with those this year.

Manzanita berries in a hand

Of course she didn’t ask me first. Most of those berries are really little and it took a long time to pick enough to do anything with.

Bongo among the bushes

Hey person, all the best berries are in here.

I tried to help, but my person told me to sit and be quiet.

Bowl of berries and a bug

We picked up a hitchhiker while my person was picking.

Finally my person was ready to head home.

I got accused of getting her backpack wet.

I’m always getting blamed for things and this time I couldn’t even put the blame on Scratchy.

It turned out my person had a leaky water bottle.

Whew! Off the hook that time.

Berries soaking in a bowl

When we got home I still had to sit and be quiet. My person wasn’t finished with those berries.

Manzanita cider in a Mason jar

Finally, the finished product.

I may have gotten off the hook for getting my person’s backpack wet, but I sure hope I don’t get accused of watering the inside of that jar.

Souvenirs of Battle

Bongo sniffing in the washThere was a battle here last night.

I can smell it.

Right here in the wash on my trails.

I wonder who won.

I can imagine what happened.

Wild boys shooting each other.

“Pow! You’re hit.”

“No, I got you.”

“It bounced off me and didn’t leave a mark.”

“I’ll get you this time.”

“Ouch! That one stung.”

There’s something I can’t figure out though.

I guess those boys must be really rich.

They use pearls for weapons.

I found one here a couple days ago.

Today there were bunches.

Airsoft pellet in a crevice

I found them in cracks.

Airsoft pellet among leaves

And stuck among old leaves.

They were everywhere.

Either those boys are so rich they don’t care about their pearls, or they couldn’t find them all in the hidey hole places they went.

I don’t know who won the battle, but I do know one thing.

Bongo with airsoft pellets

I got the pearls so I’m the true winner.

Anyone want to trade a pearl for some treats?

Bird Tree

Tree full of birdsThe birds on my trails are mostly a transient population. (I don’t know what that means, but my person made me write it.)

Anyway, we get different birds around here all the time.

A few birds hang around here all year, like the quail and the scrub jays, but mostly the birds come and the birds go.

But we always seem to have some kind of birds hanging around here.

Today I was walking on my trails and I heard a bunch of those birds singing and when I looked up I noticed something strange.

Someone must have decided that those transient birds needed someplace to hang out, so they designated one of my trail trees as a bird tree.

Because that’s where all the birds were. They were hanging out on that one bird tree.

Birds on dead branches

But that tree got so full of birds that they must have had an overflow because they had to open up a second bird tree.

Across my trail from the first bird tree was another one.

Juniper tree full of birds

I wonder if this second bird tree is for second class birds – the birds that aren’t allowed in the first tree.

Those second class birds do seem to be hiding so it’s hard to see that they’re in there.

I guess it’s embarrassing to be a second class bird in a second class tree.

Juniper tree with birds and sunlight shining through

I’m sure glad I’m a dog and not a bird.

Bongo looking down the trail

Because all my trails are first class.

Treasure on the Trail

Tiny florescent yellow ball among red rocksThis is really awesome! This is so cool!

Yesterday I found a money tree on my trails and today a found a pearl.

A trail pearl.

How many people find pearls on trails?

My person says pearls are usually found near the ocean. In something called oysters.

I’ve never seen the ocean and I have no clue what an oyster is.

But I do know that pearls are valuable and I’ve found one. Right here on my trails.

Now I’ve got to figure out what to do with my trail pearl.

I’ve got lots of money to buy all the treats I want from the money tree I found.

So I’m going to have to use this pearl to buy something special.

Like maybe a trip to the ocean so I can find some more pearls.

Or better yet, why don’t I just bring the ocean here. I’ll build a swimming pool in my backyard and put oysters in it.

And I can go swimming anytime I want.

And have pool parties too. I could invite all my dog friends over for pool parties.

With lots of treats that I bought with all the money from my money tree.

What, person?

What do you mean that’s not a pearl? Of course it’s a pearl.

What else could it be?

They’re what?

All over my yard in different colors?

You mean I’m really rich? I have different colored pearls in my own yard?

I wonder which color is worth the most. Probably the one I found on my trails because it’s so pearly looking.

What do you mean my younger person left those pearls in my yard? Is my younger person rich and I didn’t know it?

Airsoft pellets? What are those?

Are they anything like pearls?

Little plastic pellets from an airsoft gun? And they’re hardly worth anything?

I don’t believe you person. You’re just saying that so you can keep all the pearls to yourself.

Bongo looking down the trail

I’ll be out looking for more pearls.

You can’t fool me.

I’m Rich!

Bongo in front of a bushI found it! I found it! I’m rich! I’m rich!

I just found the best treasure ever on my trails.

I didn’t have to dig for it. It’s not a buried treasure.

No. It’s right here in plain sight.

Well, it’s a little ways off my trail and that’s probably why nobody found it before me.

But now I found it, and it’s mine.

.

Oh, you can’t tell what this plant is that’s hanging out behind me?

Bush with round white things on it

It’s a money tree! And it’s all mine.

Can you imagine what I can do with all the money from this tree?

All the treats I can buy?

I’ll be in treat heaven. And then everybody will be coming and giving me loves so they can have some of my treats.

What? You can’t tell this is a money tree?

Check this out.

A cluster of round flat white things on a bush

Do you see the coins hanging on this tree?

Two clusters of coin like things hanging from a bush

Look. They’re all over it.

Now don’t get any ideas.

I found this tree and it’s mine.

I’m not telling anyone where it is.

But if you’re real nice to me…

Bongo smiling in front of the money tree

I might give you a coin so you can buy a treat.

Ocotillo All Over

Bongo and OcotilloLast year my person and I took an extra long walk on trails that we hardly ever go on, because my person said that was the only place on my trails where the ocotillo grow.

Well, she lied.

Because we went on a trail that we sometimes go on – but the last time we went on it there was a sign on the part that goes back to our house saying it was closed. The sign said they wanted more cactus to grow on it – or something like that.

And besides that there were two people cuddling with each other this time.

I would have gone right up to those people and got some loves too, but my person said we could take the long way back.

The long way goes parallel (I don’t know what that word is – my person made me use it) to my regular trail, but it’s higher up the hill. My person says she hasn’t been on it in a very long time and I’m not sure if I’ve been on it at all. At least it doesn’t smell familiar.

So we were walking along on this long way trail and there they were.

Bunches of ocotillo just hanging out on the side of the hill.

Two ocotillo on the side of a hill

They were even blooming with their little red flowers on top.

Close up of an ocotillo plant

I’m still not sure why my person cares about these things though. I mean, look how tall and skinny they are.

Ocotillo in front of Sugarloaf

If I was that skinny my person would probably take me to the vet for treats and loves.

Ocotillo at the edge of Sugarloaf

I sure hope my person doesn’t try to take some of my treats and bring them up here to these ocotillo plants to fatten them up.

Ocotillo with trees in the background

I think I’d better head back home now so I can keep a close eye on my treats.

Oh no, I forgot.

Cactus Garden

There’s a tame ocotillo across the street at my neighbor dog Toby’s house.

Toby, quick! Hide your treats!

Campfire Criminal

Bongo sniffing the remains of a camp fireSomething smells terribly awry on my trails.

Wait, maybe I used the wrong word. I don’t smell any rye bread anywhere.

Something smells fishy?

Did I say fishy? Where’s the fish? Where? Where?

Oh, no fish. I don’t even smell any. Guess I’d better find another word.

Let’s see- it smells like the charcoal remains of a former fire. Like a barbecue without the meat.

No meat! There’s got to be some criminal offense here.

I’d better get my Detective Dog hat on.

Detective Dog

What happened here?

Someone had a fire on my trails and didn’t invite me.

And I bet they had treats and goodies and stuff like hot dogs and s‘ mores.

And they didn’t invite me.

Wait a minute!

No wonder they didn’t invite me.

They’re not even supposed to have a fire on my trails – and even if they could, fire restrictions are in effect. No fires anywhere.

It’s really dry out here. My puddle hasn’t even shown itself in a long time.

I bet those people know that as Detective Dog – a law abiding citizen dog (well almost) – I would be required to turn them in if I discovered who they are.

And I certainly wouldn’t want my trails to burn up.

So I’m investigating this one for sure.

Bongo investigating the old fire

And as soon as I discover who they are they’d better watch out.

I’m going to gather up all my dog buddies and after we water down their fire, we’re going to water down those culprits too.

See if they ever try starting a fire on my trails again.

People Leaving Messages

I Brake for Butterflies bumper stickerI’m finding some strange messages on some of the cars parked at my trails.

I think people are trying to imitate us dogs by leaving messages, but they haven’t quite figured out how to do it. I’m not sure they make any sense at all.

Look at this one for instance. “I Brake for Butterflies.”

It would take an awful lot of butterflies flying right into someone at the same time for that someone to break. I mean, those butterflies don’t weigh much and they’re pretty fragile themselves.

I can’t figure out – is this person with this bumper sticker afraid of butterflies? They’re not really scary.

Maybe I should find a butterfly and show this person how friendly butterflies can be. They might realize they wouldn’t break at all.

But here’s an even stranger message.

Bumper sticker says "I ascended at the Sedona 2012 Festival

I’m still trying to figure this one out. Did this person ascend to the top of one of the tall rocks around here? They’re pretty tough to climb, but some people do it.

Or maybe they ascended in one of the hot air balloons that we see.

But some people in Sedona think they can ascend into the atmosphere, or the ozone, or some higher plane somewhere. I think the plane has to take you up there.

I hope those people that ascend in strange ways know how to find their way back down without falling. That might be a rude awakening. You start floating up and away and suddenly you’re falling instead.

Oops.

But I finally found some car messages that make sense.

Bongo in front of a car with bumper stickers

I think I would really like the people who leave messages like this on their car.

Bumper stickers: "Rescue Adopt" "Wag More Bark Less"

Trail Danger

Down the TrailI was heading down my trail and I realized they were everywhere. All over my trails.

I don’t want to get near that nasty plant.

I think somebody put that plant there on purpose – so everybody would stay in the center of the trail and not wander off in the bushes.

Because if you wander off in the bushes you might not come back.

That plant has a reputation for catching its victims and holding on to them.

And never letting them go.

I bet if I wandered far enough into the bushes – if I managed to make it, that is – I’d find skeletons being held by that plant.

Skeletons of animals or people that tried to escape, but couldn’t.

Animals or people that died in the clutches of that plant and are stuck forever.

Yikes! This is scary. I sure hope that plant doesn’t get overgrown onto my trails and try to grab me.

I don’t want to go back home yet, but I sure don’t want to be stuck in the clutches of one of those things.

These plants look innocent enough.

Catclaw flower

That’s how they fool you into getting too close.

Catclaw flowers

But these plants have a horrible name for a horrible reason.

They’re called Catclaw.

And I have firsthand experience with catclaws. The animal kind.

Catclaw thorns

And these thorns look almost the same.

Yikes! I’ll be walking carefully back home now.

If you don’t see a blog post from me tomorrow, could somebody please come check the bushes on my trails?
