On the Trail Again

Bongo with his nose deep in bushesFinally! Today I was able to get my leash and put it into my person’s hand and take her for a walk. It’s been a week – well, except for one day that I took my younger person. I guess my person is getting better at chasing that bug away now so she can go with me.

I had so much to catch up with out on my trails. I had to find out which of my buddies had been by and which of them had left me messages. I bet some of them were worried when I didn’t answer for so long. Well, I sent them all messages so they know I’m back.

I was so busy sniffing that I almost didn’t notice when my person got her camera out. It’s that flower season time of year.

Wait a minute. What are these doing blooming? I thought I’d managed to get away with no Manzanita blossoms this year.

Manzanita bush in bloom

Last year the Manzanita blossomed in January. What gives?

I guess there’s only a few bushes with blossoms. My person can’t take too many pictures of them, can she?

***

We were almost back home and we’d even gone past all the Manzanita bushes – there are a lot of them on my trails – when I saw it.

I saw the strangest forest creature I’ve ever seen on my trails. I don’t know where it came from or what it was doing there.

I’m not sure what it is, but I think it’s some kind of forest fairy.

Berry Boring

Bongo with a ball between his pawsToday was a very boring day. My person left for a little while this morning – oh yeah, I did get to mess up her bed while she was gone. But when my person came back home she was already worn out from that bug thing and didn’t want to do anything else all day.

This is terrible! What am I going to do? I’m running out of adventures to post on my blog.

I know. It’s so berry boring that I’m just going to post pictures of berries that I’ve found on my trails. They’re pretty boring. You can’t eat them or anything. I don’t even know what most of them are called and I don’t know if they’re all really berries – but you can look at them anyway.

.

.

.

Juniper berries on the tree

These juniper berries were really in my backyard, but they’re all over my trails too at the right time of year.

Dark Purple Berries

These berries look kind of like blueberries, but I bet they don’t taste the same.

Little pink clumps amongst the leaves

I don’t think these things are really berries, but they’re colorful.

Red berries

These berries only showed up one year so far, even though the bush is still there.

Big berries

These things are just big. Only a few of these grow in a whole lot of bushes.

Long red berry like things

I only saw these red ones in one little spot even though there are a lot of this kind of bushes.

round ball from a bush

We found this one on the ground. I think it’s a bomb berry.

Which Gopher Wins?

Bongo checking out a gopher holeWe’ve had lots of rain and some snow lately and it really soaked into our normally dry ground – so now that the weather is clear again the gophers around here are having a heyday.

Mounds and holes are everywhere on my trails. One day I even found a hole right in the middle of the trail. Pretty nervy of that little guy.

But usually the digging evidence is off to the side of the trails where the ground is softer and those little guys don’t have to work so hard to get through.

.

Bongo checking out a gopher hole

I’ve never, ever seen one of those gophers on my trails. I think because I’m such a big, manly kind of dog I must make the earth shake as I walk. Those little guys sense it before I ever get near and run back down their little holes in sheer fright.

Not that I’d ever hurt a gopher. I’d just like to play with one for a little while. Or chase it into the woods. If it would only run on solid ground.

But I finally found the cleverest gopher of all. This gopher doesn’t need to run back down his hole anytime someone big comes near. This gopher really knows how to dig a hole.

This gopher has his own entrance with special armored protection.

The Walk that wasn’t Fair

Bongo on the trail on a leashToday was not my typical walk on my trails. I’m not sure what to think. I think I’m mad at my person right now.

She came home from wherever she’d been and took me outside way earlier than we usually go for a walk. So far, so good.

When we got out in the yard my person had a friend waiting to go with us. That’s good too.

We headed to the trails like we normally do, but as soon as we got through the parking lot we took this other trail, not the normal one.

This other trail heads right back to the street. It comes out at the other end of the block.

I couldn’t figure it out. I mean, is my person’s friend a walking wimp or something? We never go on this short of a walk. This is hardly a walk at all.

Then we got there. The other end of the block. And there to greet us were Kaiser and Lica, the two dogs that live at the other end of the block.

Well, I’d met Kaiser before and I’d given him what for, and my person had made me go home that time.

Now there were two of them. And they’re bigger than me. And guess what. They were going on a walk with us. Oops.

Lica and Kaiser

Now here’s the worst part. Kaiser and Lica didn’t have to go on leashes – and I did. No fair!

My person kept saying I’d run off if she let me off the leash. What kind of talk is that? She doesn’t trust her own dog?

That might not have been quite so bad except that Kaiser and Lica got to chase after sticks.

Kaiser

Next time my person throws me my Frisbee I’m making her go after it herself. That’ll teach her.

Sightings

Ghost Dog on the trailsSomething unusual happened on my trails today. Yeah, I know. Unusual things are always happening on my trails. And this thing isn’t all that unusual. What’s unusual is that it happened twice – only two days apart.

Every few months I have this particular sighting on my trails. No, it’s not a UFO sighting, but it’s something equally as amazing. At least I think so. And every time I have this sighting it only lasts for a short time, and then it’s gone.

What I’m talking about is Ghost Dog. He looks like a ghost ‘cause he’s white and he always disappears right away. My person says he has a real name, but Ghost Dog works for me.

So a couple days ago I was minding my business, out on my trails when – there he was. And just as I expected, he disappeared almost as quickly.

Ghost Dog going away

And today it happened again. This time I was almost back to the trailhead before he showed up. But he did something strange. He took his time disappearing. He let me actually get up to him and sniff his side. He must be losing his touch – or his ghostiness.

Well, that wasn’t good enough for me. I mean, how can he be Ghost Dog if he’s not going to disappear? So you know what I did?

I gave him a little shove.

Ghost Dog disappeared.

Red Trails Again

Red Rocks in snow and cloudsThis is our second day of falling snow and it still isn’t covering up my trails.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Bongo speckled with snow

I haven’t been able to figure out why that snow can cover me up, but not my trails.

I guess some good things came out of it though. Lots of squishy mud.

Bongo and his paw prints in the mud

We met a man that looked like he had had a close encounter with some of that squishy mud. It gave me a great idea. What if my person and I did some mud wrestling? It would be almost as much fun as playing in snow. I tried to suggest it to my person and she wouldn’t go for it. People just don’t know how to have fun.

Well, most people anyway. We met two people who were laughing as they came around a bend. I think they were having fun. And they hadn’t even been doing any mud wrestling. I thought I’d do them a favor by showing them how tasty snow is. They didn’t want any though. They might know how to have fun, but they’re missing out when it comes to good taste.

Raven flying in a snowstorm

The ravens looked like they were having great fun today.

Raven flying near a tree

They usually don’t come this close to us, but I guess they were enjoying the snow.

Raven sitting in a tree

But since I can’t fly and my person won’t mud wrestle with me I’ll have to have fun in the snow a different way.

Maybe I can pretend I’m Waldo’s dog.

Can you see me?

Snow for a Snow Dog

Snow Covered YuccaIt snowed today. Almost all day. It finally stuck on the trees and bushes, but we never got much on the ground.

My person checked on her friends on Facebook and you know what she discovered? Her friends that live south of Tucson built a snowman today. And her my friends that live a few miles from us and at a much lower elevation – what’s that word mean again, person? – they live down the hill from us, built a snowman today.

I’m not asking for a snowman, but a snow dog would be nice. But we don’t even have enough snow on the ground to do that.

Bongo eating snow off of low hanging branches

I had to get my snow treats off the trees today.

I guess I shouldn’t complain about that. Those treats were at the perfect level. I didn’t have to bend over.

Bongo on a red trail in snow

Not enough snow for a snow dog here either. Maybe I could mix some mud into the snow. A red and white snow dog might look pretty cool.

Bongo on a rock with snow and puddles in the distance

Even my wash is looking pretty sad. I think there’s more puddles than snow down here.

And now it’s not even snowing any more. How am I ever going to build a snow dog if the snow stops coming down?

Thunder Mountain in snow

Hey! I think I just figured out what happened to all the snow. It got stuck on top of those big rocks.

I wonder how I could get those rocks to shake around a bit and send some of that snow flying this way.

Mark a Tree

Tree with an orange ribbon in itThe other day my person and I were walking along my trails. It was a snowy kind of day. Not enough snow to be good for playing in – just enough to wash the color out of everything.

And then I saw it. Brightly standing out. Right at the point where my person and I usually turn around and head back for home. You couldn’t miss it in all of its orangeness. A ribbon tied to a tree. It hadn’t been there before.

I puzzled about that ribbon on our way back home. We were almost to the end of the trail – when there it was.

.

.

.

Orange ribbon in pine tree

That ribbon had beaten us back home. And now it was tied to another tree. And it was almost as if that ribbon was trying to tell us what to do. Turn around here. End your walk here.

I am not going to follow a ribbon. Orange or otherwise. I just won’t do it.

If that ribbon thinks it’s going to tell me where to go, I’m going to go a different way. I’ll turn around at a different place, and I’ll find a different ending of my trails to come out on. No orange ribbon is telling me what to do.

But wait. Maybe that orange ribbon isn’t there for me at all. Maybe I won’t have to change which trails I walk on. Maybe that orange ribbon is there to mark the beginning and end of a race. I bet those pesky squirrels are racing on my trails.

Now’s my chance. I’ll wait until those pesky squirrels run by, and I’ll stick my paw out and trip them. Every last one of them.

And then I’ll give those squirrels what for to make up for all the times they’ve been hanging out in trees harassing me.

I wonder if I could get that orange ribbon to lay out a different course. Maybe between two trees closer together with bare ground in between.

I hope those squirrels obey orange ribbons better than I do.

Washed Out

Bongo in the washI really love going into the wash on my trails. It has the best smells and it’s full of quail to chase. Well, I wish I could chase them. They’re always running away through the bushes long before I ever get near them.

The wash isn’t really a trail, but it does have trails leading down into it. One of those trails, my favorite, my person usually won’t let me use. Sometimes when the ground is moist and soft she lets me go down it but otherwise she says it’s got too many loose rocks for how steep it is. Just because I jumped all over her the one time she did slip. I thought she just got on the ground so we could wrestle. How was I to know?

But there’s another trail into the wash a little ways past that one. It’s not so steep so my person lets me use that one most of the time. Sometimes when it’s been raining a lot she doesn’t want to go into the wash at all. And that’s the most fun time, too. I love splashing in all those puddles. My person just doesn’t know how to have fun.

Today I found a new trail into the wash. And it takes me into the wash even earlier than those other trails.

And guess what. That upper part of the wash has some special surprises in it. Things that must get washed out before they get further down the wash.

Today I found something really special.

Missing Birds

Bongo walking into the windNormally when I go out on my trails I hear lots of birds chirping or making whatever birdie sound they feel like making. And if I look up into the trees I can usually see birds flitting around in there.

But not today. The birds were quiet, but it certainly wasn’t quiet on my trails.

There was howling, and whistling, and blowing, and my ears got pressed down tight to my head. The clouds overhead were moving so fast I’m surprised there were any left in the sky.

I finally heard one bird overhead, but it went by so fast that I think the wind had grabbed it and was taking it wherever it is that wind goes.

It must have taken all the other birds already.

I was determined that the wind wasn’t going to take me away, so I led my person down into the wash where the wind had trouble getting to us.

Bongo in the wash

And guess what. Some of the birds had the same idea. At least the ones that the wind hadn’t grabbed and taken away yet.

Birds were chirping down in that wash, and a raven was even toughing it out overhead.

Guess I know where I’m heading if I ever want to go bird hunting on a windy day.
