The Rain Changes Everything

Bongo looking away from a prickly pear blossomIt rained last night.

Really hard.

For a long time.

It’s been a very long time since we had rain.

So today when I went out on my trails, everything looked different.

The first different thing I found was my girlfriend Lucy.

The rain must have brought her out, because I haven’t seen her in a very long time.

And then I saw…

Hey person, look over there.

No, not that direction.

There’s nothing for you to take pictures of that you would be interested in looking at in that direction.

***

There have been no flowers on my trails for awhile now.

It’s been nice.

.

But a late blooming prickly pear popped out after the rain and of course my person had to take a picture.

Prickly pear blossom

At least there were only two blossoms on all of my trails so I got my person moving along fairly quickly.

And then I saw it!!!

My puddle!

Bongo by his puddle

My puddle had returned!

It’s been so long since I’ve seen my puddle that I almost forgot about it.

But my person said we couldn’t stay forever – it was getting dark.

So we saw a few ho hum things on our way back from my puddle.

Javelina tracks in the mud

Javelina tracks in the mud.

Clouds lit by the setting sun

And some clouds.

Boring.

Short Stacks

Bongo and a bunch of rocksA long time ago some strange rock piles appeared where the boys used to hang out near my trails.

Those rock piles stayed in that spot for a very long time.

And more and more rock piles showed up there.

There were so many that I don’t think anybody could walk around there anymore.

I was going to check it out but my person wouldn’t let me.

She said those rock piles were taller than me and a rock might fall on my head.

I’m not sure why she was worried.

She says I have a hard head.

I think it was just her excuse to keep me away from there.

***

But today, as I walked by that spot things were different.

The rock piles had shrunk – and some had gone away completely.

Bongo sniffing the rocks

Guess I’d better check for clues.

I’ve got to know what happened around here.

***

This is bad.

This is really bad.

There are so many mixed messages around here that I’ll never sort it all out.

Bongo leaving a message on some rocks

Guess I’ll just leave one of my own.

My New Friend

Girl with a painted faceI got a new friend today.

My person must have been feeling guilty about not taking me to play with all those kids at Vacation Bible School…

…because she brought me a new friend.

It’s not every day that I get a new friend, so I was really excited when she showed up.

But I got kind of worried.

She might run out of room on her face for painting and try to paint mine.

.

.

.

So I decided to take her for a walk.

Bongo sniffing a tree with a girl standing next to him

She started out to be a great walker.

Waiting patiently while I checked my messages.

Bongo sniffing while the girl is pulling on his leash

Well, I thought she was waiting patiently.

Come on, new friend.

I’m not finished checking my messages yet.

Bongo refusing to budge

This is really bad.

My person must have given my new friend lessons.

She’s yanking on my leash just like my person does.

I’d better explain to her what a disaster it could be if I miss an important message.

Bongo and the girl walking down the trail

Wait a minute, new friend.

You don’t get it.

I’ve got to go back.

***

Does anybody know where there’s a training class to teach people how to walk their dogs?

No Smoking

Bongo near a No Smoking signIt’s about time they got serious about this.

People hardly ever leave their litter on my trails, but they do leave cigarette butts.

And those butts stick around until they get covered up with dirt.

And they aren’t even the kind of butts that are good for sniffing.

But my person says the people who put up those signs weren’t even looking at the butts on my trails.

.

.

.

.

Because they don’t want this kind of smoking on my trails again.

Thunder Mountain behind smoke

A long time ago they posted fire restrictions because the fire hazard is so high right now.

And those restrictions include no smoking outside.

But for some reason wildfires don’t pay attention to signs.

And neither do some cigarette smokers.

So they had to put up great big signs.

Bongo sniffing near No Smoking sign

Hey person, I’ll be along in a minute.

I’m checking to see if there are any messages about people not seeing this sign.

Church Invite

Bongo next to a church invite on the trailI was walking along on my trails, minding my own business – when I spotted it.

An invite to church.

And I came to the only logical conclusion.

Since the invite is on my trails, and lots of dogs walk on my trails, someone obviously is inviting dogs to church.

So I told my person it was about time she took me to church.

And you know what she said?

She said this invite wasn’t to the church she goes to, and she wasn’t going to take me there.

This is bad.

This is really bad.

***

I had to find a way to get to church.

Bongo sniffing behind the church invite

I checked for messages.

Maybe one of my dog friends was offering rides to this church that invited us.

No such luck though.

And you know what my person did on Sunday morning?

She locked me in dog jail and drove off to her church.

It’s about time her church starting inviting dogs.

But I think they did and somehow I missed getting my invitation.

Or maybe my person hid it from me.

Because when she got home she told me there were five dogs at church.

My person is always pulling mischief on me like this.

And to make matters worse, she even saw a friend who was visiting from a long ways away that asked about me.

I know he would have liked to meet me in person in dog for real and give me the hug he told my person to give me for him.

All I can say is that next week I’m expecting six dogs at church.

And one of them had better be me.

Take Your Dog to Work Day

Bongo in the wash on his trails

Come on person, we’ve got to get to work.

I don’t get it.

Today is a really special holiday, but it came on the wrong week.

Why didn’t it come last week?

That would have been much better.

You see, today is Take Your Dog to Work Day.

And you know where my person is working this week?

At home.

Do you believe it?

She’s working at home playing catch-up with all the things that she didn’t get done last week.

Because last week she was working at Vacation Bible School all week.

With all those kids and weird animals.

That’s where I wanted to go to work.

I would have even dressed up as a weird animal if I had to.

But I think those kids would have liked me no matter what.

I guess I’ll have to take my person to work with me instead.

My work is on my trails – where all my adventures lay waiting for me.

But while you’re waiting for me to come back and report on my next adventure, I thought I’d share a song with you.

It’s a special song for today.

Just click on this link: http://www.takeyourdog.com/audio/2012-TYDTW-Song.mp3 and take your dog to work.

In the Shadows

Bongo on the trail I finally figured it out.

I’m a genius!

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before.

You see, my person is always making me wait while she takes pictures of flowers on my trails.

But she likes to take those pictures when the lighting is just right.

So I’ll only take her out on my trails when the lighting is all wrong.

When the sun is almost down and everything is in shadow.

The light’s no good for flower pictures, and this time of year the temperature is much better in the shadows.

So that’s what I’m gonna do.

No more walks in perfect light for my person.

It’s shadows from now on.

I bet her camera won’t even work.

***

Hey person, what do you think you’re doing?

It must be some kind of reflex or something.

My person gets her camera out by pure habit.

Oh no.

Stop person!

Don’t click that camera!

Can’t you see you’re wasting your memory card space?

You might need it to take pictures of me.

What is this?

Either my person has lost it, or she can’t see anything in these shadows.

Grassy plant blooming

That’s not even a flower.

The Sentinel

Bongo in front of the bush with berriesSomebody is trying to take over my trails.

She’s posting herself in a prominent place and making all kinds of noise.

And there’s scurrying in the bushes.

She must be gathering her army around her.

What am I going to do about this?

Spies in the bushes trying to take over my trails.

I wonder what would happen if I plowed into those bushes.

I’m much bigger than that would be trail thief.

I bet I could cause some excitement in those bushes.

But then that army in the bushes might move to my trails and I’d really have problems.

Maybe I should try it anyway.

I bet there’d be feathers flying everywhere.

That might be fun.

Alright you cactus sentinel.

I’m going in after your army!

Don’t Look

Bongo in front of a blooming cholla cactusDon’t look person.

There’s nothing over here.

Just keep walking on the trail.

I’ll catch up with you as soon as I take care of business.

Just don’t look this way.

.

.

.

.

.

Red cholla cactus flowers

Person, you weren’t supposed to look over here.

I didn’t want you to see those cactus flowers.

Now I’m stuck.

She’ll be here taking pictures forever.

.

Red cholla cactus flowers

See. I told you so.

***

Whew! She didn’t take too many pictures this time.

Now we can get on with our walk.

Wait a minute!

What are you doing?

My person is so desperate to take pictures that she’s finding flowers that don’t even exist.

Green cholla cactus flowers

Since when do we have green flowers on my trails?

Healing

Bongo next to a healing prickly pear cactusI’ve got some good news to share with you.

You see, a little over a year ago there was some serious mischief on my trails.

A crime actually.

Someone had murdered some of my prickly pear cacti.

If you want to know how terrible this crime was you can click on this link here.

Ever since then I’ve been sad every time I walk by and see them.

But those prickly pear are hardy.

And they’re beginning to show signs of healing.

They must have only been almost murdered.

How do I know?

.

Because dead cacti don’t grow flowers.

Damaged prickly pear cactus with blossoms

It’s like a miracle on my trails.

And things have gotten even better.

The injured prickly pear keep getting more flowers.

Damaged prickly pear with blossoms

But please be careful around these prickly pear.

If you tell them they still look ugly…

they might shed a few flowers.
