Thunder in the Air

Bongo waiting at the doorHey person. You’re breaking all the rules.

You are not supposed to leave me alone here when there’s thunder in the air.

Well, I know there wasn’t when you left me – but there is now.

You’re not supposed to leave me alone when thunder might be in the air.

Take me with you next time – or don’t even leave the house.

.

.

.

Bongo and Toby on a walk

Toby and his person came over to go for a walk with me.

I tried to tell them I don’t do walks when there’s thunder in the air.

They wouldn’t listen.

Nobody listens to me.

So I pulled right out of my collar.

They brought me back home.

And left me all alone with thunder in the air.

At least you came home right when the boomers were getting loud.

How come your hair’s wet? It didn’t start raining until after you got home.

Did you go take a shower somewhere?

You have a shower right here. Why would you go somewhere else to take a shower?

Rain shower? What do you mean, rain shower?

It wasn’t raining until after you got home.

You mean there was rain and thunder somewhere else?

You mean it’s everywhere? There’s no way to escape it?

Well that settles it then.

No walks for you today.

Bongo sleeping under a blanket

I’m staying right here under my thunder blanket. Don’t even try to budge me.

One to Many Walks

Bongo in the kitchen resisting his leashNo, person. I am not leaving the house!

There’s thunder out there.

Besides, I already had my walk today.

I don’t care if you didn’t.

You could have gone on your own walk. You left me for long enough.

It’s a good thing you left the front door open so I could escape.

And it’s a good thing my younger person stayed asleep in bed so he didn’t see me escape.

You want me to tell them the rest of the story?

I don’t want to. It’s too awful.

Oh, I thought you meant the thunder part.

Well, it all started a few days ago when our neighbor saw the devil cat in his yard.

Bobcat drawing

Apparently that devil cat bobcat has been lurking around because today when my person left the house she found a dead cat in our driveway.

And our neighbor found another one in his yard.

My person was so upset she didn’t close the front door when she left.

So now comes the really bad part.

What do you mean, that was the really bad part?

Like I said, the really bad part is coming.

Because it started thundering. And my person was gone. And my younger person was asleep with his door shut.

But I found the open front door and I was off down the street.

I met a really nice neighbor that I didn’t know before.

At least I thought he was nice. Until he called my person and ratted on me.

And then he took me back home and made me go in the house.

He could have at least stopped the thunder first.

So person, I don’t care what you say.

Bongo in the yard resisting his leash

I am not going on another walk today.

Pulling Mischief

Bongo and his younger person on the trailMy younger person has been home for the last few days and he let me take him for a walk.

I got really excited because I don’t get to go on walks with him very often.

But we got out a little ways on my trails and I sensed something.

There’s a storm brewing somewhere.

.

.

lit up clouds

You see it?

Oh. Well, maybe not in that direction.

It must be over here.

cloudy sky over Chinmey Rock

I know there’s a storm somewhere.

Maybe we just can’t see it yet.

I decided we shouldn’t go any further.

And you know what my younger person did?

Bongo being dragged by his collar

He pulled mischief on me and started dragging me along.

Do you believe it?

I guess walking is better than getting dragged.

Bongo and his younger person walking on the trail again

So I walked for awhile.

But then I’d had it.

I know that storm is somewhere around here.

I’m not taking a chance.

Bongo pulling against the leash

I’m not going any further.

Bongo giving even more resistance to the leash

Seriously. I mean it.

Bongo sitting at the end of the leash

Two can play at this game.

Younger person shortening the leash while Bongo still sits

So who’s the best mischief maker now?

Mischief!

Bongo not movingI’ve got a complaint, and I should have posted this for Monday Mischief, but when someone pulls mischief on me, I’ve got to post it when it happens.

You see, my person tried to tell me everything was fine outside. I knew it wasn’t but she made me go.

My neighbor across the street was in on it too. He said there wasn’t any thunder.

But I knew it was coming. The wind was blowing, the clouds were dark, and I knew I would hear that awful noise any minute.

It even started raining. I swear I felt a drop or two.

I took my person into my wash because it seemed like the safest place.

But then it happened. The wind picked up and I heard a rumbly in the sky. Not loud, but it still meant business in my book.

Bongo trying to climb the rocks

I tried to get my person to head the safest direction, but for some reason she wouldn’t go for it.

More mischief on her part, I’m sure.

Since my person wouldn’t go up that hill there was only one direction to head – and it led straight to my toadies.

And you know what my person did?

She pulled more mischief on me!

Bongo tied to a dead tree

She tied me to a tree.

Bongo tied to and tangled on a tree

She tried to tell me it was so I wouldn’t trample the toadies.

Bongo looking down from the tree he's tied to

I’ll trample those toadies alright.

They’re pulling mischief on me too.

They took my puddle.

Tiny toads in mud

There were little toadies hopping around everywhere that my puddle used to be.

They seemed to be settling in.

Toads in a mud hut

They even had little toad houses.

This mischief has gone far enough.

I’m having it out with those toadies right now.

Those toadies are going to have to move and give me back my puddle.

Morning Treat

Bongo on the runFor the second day in a row I took my person for a walk in the morning – before that nasty thunder starts showing up.

And I’m finding there are extra benefits to going on walks this time of day.

Not only is it calmer and quieter – with no wind and no booming thunder – but this is the time that some of my friends are taking their people for walks.

.

.

Layla

Like my girlfriend Layla.

I hadn’t seen Layla in a long time and it was great fun romping around with her.

But since it had been so long she seemed to be a little shy at first.

Bongo giving Layla a nose kiss

I had to start out with a gentle nose kiss.

But soon Layla warmed up to me again.

And I got some really good loves.

Bongo getting loves from Layla

Woo woo!

Changing the Time

Bongo behind a bunch of bushesMy person finally figured it out. If we go on our trail walk in the morning there’s no thunder.

And it’s quiet – and peaceful.

This morning there was no wind to blow the smells away. I had a great time exploring and finding new smells.

Of course my person – like usual – kept dragging me away from all the good smells.

And then my person – like usual – wouldn’t go on a longer walk.

The same old routine.

Well, I guess it wasn’t really. We went at a different time of day.

Usually this time of year we go in the evening – when the sun is getting low.

But the thunder has been rumbling then too.

Hey person, I don’t need this thunder thing on anymore.

I’m brave now. See, there’s nothing here to scare me.

You need to get up early every morning for our walks.

That way you can get your exercise.

Wait! What do you mean, you want your exercise now?

I’ll just be a few more minutes here.

Bongo sniffing behind bushes

What do you think walks are for anyway?

Change of Plans

Bongo pulling against his leashI don’t know what my person is thinking. She keeps wanting to go for walks on my trails, and for the last few days I’ve been telling her it’s not safe there.

There’s thunder out there.

I guess my person doesn’t understand the danger of thunder.

Which is why she needs me to keep her safe.

So when she kept insisting we should go on my trails I really had to put my feet down.

.

Bongo pulling hard against his leash

Finally I got through to her.

I took her for a walk around the block instead.

I got to meet some dogs that I don’t usually see on my trails.

Well, they barked at me through their fence anyway.

I riled up Kaiser and Lica and they barked at me from inside their house. And while my person stopped to talk to their person their cat was sneaking peeks at me from the yard.

What? Wait a minute! I didn’t see that cat.

You mean I missed a perfectly good opportunity to chase a cat.

I’d better take my person on more walks around the block.

I had a great time walking around the block today, but I don’t think my person liked it so much.

Bongo in front of a Foreclosure sign

Because she put me up for foreclosure.

What’s foreclosure?

Is that related to golf?

Golf balls aren’t much fun to play with.

Tennis balls are better.

And they have love in tennis.

Could you change that sign, person?

Tennis balls and loves. Woo woo! What a combination!

Let’s go around the block again – as soon as that new sign goes up.

After a Rain

Bongo trying to go down another trailEarlier today we had a bunch of thunder and some rain, but things had calmed down.

So my person and I decided to go for a walk.

Because of the rain everything smelled fresh and good, and the rain and clouds had cooled the air.

Rather than sweltering in the heat like we’ve been doing the last few days, it felt refreshing out in the cooler temperature.

This was turning into one of the best walks I’ve been on in a long time.

But then it happened.

First it was just a few drops of rain.

I can handle that.

But then I saw it.

A big flash of lightning.

And you know what comes after that.

Thunder!

I hate thunder. I’m deathly afraid of it.

Fortunately we were right at the beginning of a trail heading into the wash.

And it was the opposite direction of that thunder.

It’s a cool trail too, because you have to climb over big rocks when you get into the wash there.

But my person didn’t get it. She said we weren’t going that way.

I insisted.

Bongo refusing to budge

I lost.

But that thunder kept getting worse. And it came from the very direction we were headed.

My person says we have to go through this stuff to get home.

But I’m sure we can still get home if we head in another direction.

The Walk that wasn’t Fair

Bongo on the trail on a leashToday was not my typical walk on my trails. I’m not sure what to think. I think I’m mad at my person right now.

She came home from wherever she’d been and took me outside way earlier than we usually go for a walk. So far, so good.

When we got out in the yard my person had a friend waiting to go with us. That’s good too.

We headed to the trails like we normally do, but as soon as we got through the parking lot we took this other trail, not the normal one.

This other trail heads right back to the street. It comes out at the other end of the block.

I couldn’t figure it out. I mean, is my person’s friend a walking wimp or something? We never go on this short of a walk. This is hardly a walk at all.

Then we got there. The other end of the block. And there to greet us were Kaiser and Lica, the two dogs that live at the other end of the block.

Well, I’d met Kaiser before and I’d given him what for, and my person had made me go home that time.

Now there were two of them. And they’re bigger than me. And guess what. They were going on a walk with us. Oops.

Lica and Kaiser

Now here’s the worst part. Kaiser and Lica didn’t have to go on leashes – and I did. No fair!

My person kept saying I’d run off if she let me off the leash. What kind of talk is that? She doesn’t trust her own dog?

That might not have been quite so bad except that Kaiser and Lica got to chase after sticks.

Kaiser

Next time my person throws me my Frisbee I’m making her go after it herself. That’ll teach her.

Walking with Bunnies

Two Bunnies on leashesWait a minute! Wait just a minute! This is a dog blog. What are those bunnies doing on my blog?

***

My person left me for a long time today. And when she got home I smelled something on her.

It smelled kinda, sorta, a little bit familiar. Then I realized why.

It smelled like those wild bunnies that I chase sometimes on my trails. Or at least I try to chase. It’s kind of hard when you’ve got a person attached to your leash.

But even though the smell was like my trail bunnies, it wasn’t quite the same.

So my person had to admit it. She’d been petting bunnies. Bunnies on leashes!

She even had pictures to prove it.

Two bunnies on leashes

This got me really worried. What if my person decided she’d rather take one of those bunnies on a walk instead of me? What if she left me home and took a bunny?

My person said those bunnies were softer than me. And she said they had a job working as therapy bunnies in a nursing home.

And my person said those bunnies didn’t get into mischief like me.

That settles it! Who would want a pet that didn’t get into mischief? How boring would that be?

I was still a bit worried though that I might be ousted; until my person said she got me something to make up for petting those bunnies.

Different shaped dog cookies

Cookies!

And they look like cars, and bones, and cats, and pesky squirrels.

I already ate the pesky squirrel.

Hey Scratchy, I’m going to eat the cat next.

Do they have any cookies that look like bunnies?
