About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

Snow for a Snow Dog

Snow Covered YuccaIt snowed today. Almost all day. It finally stuck on the trees and bushes, but we never got much on the ground.

My person checked on her friends on Facebook and you know what she discovered? Her friends that live south of Tucson built a snowman today. And her my friends that live a few miles from us and at a much lower elevation – what’s that word mean again, person? – they live down the hill from us, built a snowman today.

I’m not asking for a snowman, but a snow dog would be nice. But we don’t even have enough snow on the ground to do that.

Bongo eating snow off of low hanging branches

I had to get my snow treats off the trees today.

I guess I shouldn’t complain about that. Those treats were at the perfect level. I didn’t have to bend over.

Bongo on a red trail in snow

Not enough snow for a snow dog here either. Maybe I could mix some mud into the snow. A red and white snow dog might look pretty cool.

Bongo on a rock with snow and puddles in the distance

Even my wash is looking pretty sad. I think there’s more puddles than snow down here.

And now it’s not even snowing any more. How am I ever going to build a snow dog if the snow stops coming down?

Thunder Mountain in snow

Hey! I think I just figured out what happened to all the snow. It got stuck on top of those big rocks.

I wonder how I could get those rocks to shake around a bit and send some of that snow flying this way.

It’s Love Your Pet Day!

Bongo and his FrisbeeToday is a special day. Do you know what it is? It’s Love Your Pet Day.

What better day could there possibly be?

I wonder what my person is going to do for me today.

Maybe she’ll take me for an extra long walk on my trails.

Or maybe she’ll even take me to the dog park.

I bet I’ll get lots and lots of treats.

I might even get a new toy or two.

And loves. And lots of Frisbees and balls tossed for me to catch.

I’m so excited! This is going to be a really great day.

What?

Wait a minute!

Scratchy on the back of the couch

What did you say, person? Scratchy’s your pet too?

And you’re going to give him special things today?

And you think I should do special things for Scratchy too?

Now that’s going a bit too far.

What’s Scratchy going to do for me?

Hey, where are you going, person?

She left. I don’t believe it. She left.

It’s Love Your Pet Day and our person left us Scratchy. What kind of love is that?

I’ll tell you what, Scratchy. Since it’s Love Your Pet Day I won’t harass you if you don’t harass me. Is that a deal?

Okay good. Deal!

Mark a Tree

Tree with an orange ribbon in itThe other day my person and I were walking along my trails. It was a snowy kind of day. Not enough snow to be good for playing in – just enough to wash the color out of everything.

And then I saw it. Brightly standing out. Right at the point where my person and I usually turn around and head back for home. You couldn’t miss it in all of its orangeness. A ribbon tied to a tree. It hadn’t been there before.

I puzzled about that ribbon on our way back home. We were almost to the end of the trail – when there it was.

.

.

.

Orange ribbon in pine tree

That ribbon had beaten us back home. And now it was tied to another tree. And it was almost as if that ribbon was trying to tell us what to do. Turn around here. End your walk here.

I am not going to follow a ribbon. Orange or otherwise. I just won’t do it.

If that ribbon thinks it’s going to tell me where to go, I’m going to go a different way. I’ll turn around at a different place, and I’ll find a different ending of my trails to come out on. No orange ribbon is telling me what to do.

But wait. Maybe that orange ribbon isn’t there for me at all. Maybe I won’t have to change which trails I walk on. Maybe that orange ribbon is there to mark the beginning and end of a race. I bet those pesky squirrels are racing on my trails.

Now’s my chance. I’ll wait until those pesky squirrels run by, and I’ll stick my paw out and trip them. Every last one of them.

And then I’ll give those squirrels what for to make up for all the times they’ve been hanging out in trees harassing me.

I wonder if I could get that orange ribbon to lay out a different course. Maybe between two trees closer together with bare ground in between.

I hope those squirrels obey orange ribbons better than I do.

Washed Out

Bongo in the washI really love going into the wash on my trails. It has the best smells and it’s full of quail to chase. Well, I wish I could chase them. They’re always running away through the bushes long before I ever get near them.

The wash isn’t really a trail, but it does have trails leading down into it. One of those trails, my favorite, my person usually won’t let me use. Sometimes when the ground is moist and soft she lets me go down it but otherwise she says it’s got too many loose rocks for how steep it is. Just because I jumped all over her the one time she did slip. I thought she just got on the ground so we could wrestle. How was I to know?

But there’s another trail into the wash a little ways past that one. It’s not so steep so my person lets me use that one most of the time. Sometimes when it’s been raining a lot she doesn’t want to go into the wash at all. And that’s the most fun time, too. I love splashing in all those puddles. My person just doesn’t know how to have fun.

Today I found a new trail into the wash. And it takes me into the wash even earlier than those other trails.

And guess what. That upper part of the wash has some special surprises in it. Things that must get washed out before they get further down the wash.

Today I found something really special.

The only patch of snow left anywhere on my trails. Time for a treat!

In His Hometown

Jesus reading Scriptures in the Synagogue at NazarethIt’s pretty cool all those miracles Jesus was doing. I bet he was a hero when he finally went back to his hometown. I bet they were all excited for Jesus to do some miracles for them.

Where was it Jesus was from again?

Oh yeah, Nazareth. They probably knew him pretty well there since that’s where he grew up.

Okay, I’ll listen to the story.

***

Jesus went to Nazareth and on the Sabbath day…

***

The what day?

Oh, that’s the day they rested and worshiped God?

I guess every day is a Sabbath day for me – at least about the rest part. Naps are good.

I’m listening.

***

On the Sabbath day Jesus went to the synagogue and he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He unrolled it and read,

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to preach good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to release the oppressed,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

***

Jesus left out a part. The part about giving extra fish to all the dogs.

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

Jesus rolled up the scroll and gave it back. He sat down and everyone was looking at him. Then he said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

All the people were amazed at what Jesus said, but then they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

Jesus knew what the people were thinking and he said, “I tell you the truth. No prophet is accepted in his hometown.”

Jesus didn’t perform any big miracles in Nazareth.

***

I guess they didn’t get any extra fish either.

***

The people in the synagogue became furious at Jesus.

***

I guess they were pretty hungry and really wanted some fish.

***

They took him to the brow of the hill the town was built on and intended to throw him off the cliff. But Jesus walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

Then he went to Capernaum and made his new home there.

***

Did the people in Capernaum get some extra fish?

Hey person, you could give me some fish. You wouldn’t want me moving to Capernaum, would you?

Payback

Scratchy on his cat cageScratchy had to go to the vet today. He wasn’t very happy about it.

But I’m pretty proud of myself. It’s my fault he had to go.

When I went to the vet the other day they found some nasty little bugs on me. I gave those bugs what for, but they thought I might have given Scratchy some.

I could have told them that Scratchy couldn’t possibly have gotten any bugs from me. Unless they ran up his nasty little claws. That’s the only part of Scratchy that ever touches me.

Oh wait, I did kiss Scratchy the other day. (Please don’t tell anybody.) But Scratchy was so rude he walked away right in the middle of my kiss.

So he deserves to have to go to the vet. Scratchy hates the vet.

Scratchy hates the vet so much that he has a black mark on his file there. It says “Attack Cat.”

Bongo looking at Scratchy in the cage

Scratchy finally came home and I had him right where I wanted him. All caged up.

Bongo looking in the cat cage with its door open

Darn, that door came open. Come on out, Scratchy.

Scratchy inside his cat cage

Scratchy, what are you waiting for?

Bongo and Scratchy going at it while Scratchy is in the cage

Never mind. I think maybe you should stay inside that cage.

***

Scratchy finally snuck out of the cage when I wasn’t looking.

He jumped on top of the kitchen cabinets…

and decided to pose as “ornament cat.”

Missing Birds

Bongo walking into the windNormally when I go out on my trails I hear lots of birds chirping or making whatever birdie sound they feel like making. And if I look up into the trees I can usually see birds flitting around in there.

But not today. The birds were quiet, but it certainly wasn’t quiet on my trails.

There was howling, and whistling, and blowing, and my ears got pressed down tight to my head. The clouds overhead were moving so fast I’m surprised there were any left in the sky.

I finally heard one bird overhead, but it went by so fast that I think the wind had grabbed it and was taking it wherever it is that wind goes.

It must have taken all the other birds already.

I was determined that the wind wasn’t going to take me away, so I led my person down into the wash where the wind had trouble getting to us.

Bongo in the wash

And guess what. Some of the birds had the same idea. At least the ones that the wind hadn’t grabbed and taken away yet.

Birds were chirping down in that wash, and a raven was even toughing it out overhead.

Guess I know where I’m heading if I ever want to go bird hunting on a windy day.

You’d Choose Me

Bongo getting loves from an artistI haven’t seen one of those on my trails since the Sedona Plein Air Festival. An artist!

And not only an artist, but a really cool artist. One that gives loves to dogs.

And she came a very long way to give me loves too. All the way from Canada.

That really makes her special. I don’t know many people who would come from Canada to give me loves – let alone artists.

What, person?

What do you mean, she didn’t come to see me? Of course she did.

What red rocks?

Oh, those. Why would anybody want to paint those?

Yeah, I know there’s a picture of the red rocks that you painted hanging in our living room.

Yeah, I know you take pictures of those red rocks and post them on my blog sometimes.

But you’re here already. And you just can’t leave your camera at home. And besides, I’m here so you don’t have to travel anywhere to give me loves.

So let me ask you this, person. If you could travel anywhere in the world, and you had a choice of either going to a place where you could paint red rocks, or to the place I was so you could give me loves you’d choose me, right? Yup, I knew it.

Well, don’t you think most people would choose me over red rocks? That artist is just extra lucky because she didn’t have to decide.

P.S. I wasn’t making this artist thing up. You can see her website here.

Could I Just Have My Treats?

Bongo waiting for the door to openI was really excited today when my person went out to the car and then came back for me. She didn’t even have to tell me. I jumped right in.

I’m not sure why she won’t let me in the front seat when she’s driving, but at least the ride wasn’t long.

We got out at the vet. I love going to the vet. Treats and loves. That’s what I get.

I made a new friend when I got inside. A poodle. He greeted me at the door.

And then one of my people friends came to get me.

She checked me over and then left the room. I stood patiently looking at the door and wagging my tail, waiting for her to come back so I could get my treats and loves.

Bongo between the vet and the technician

But they were holding off on those treats today, and picking at me instead.

Bongo between two people with their hands on him

I tried to get my person to make them stop and give me my treats, but she seemed helpless to do anything.

Bongo's hair in the comb being checked

I don’t know what they were finding so interesting in my hair.

If they wanted a souvenir so bad they could have just cut a hunk of hair off. I wouldn’t mind. But please give me my treats and loves.

Bongo being held onto while his hair is combed

This wasn’t quite the kind of loves I had in mind.

They found what? Little bugs attached to me? Tics? Do they taste good?

I’ll settle for my treats then.

Oh yeah? I might have given bugs to Scratchy? I bet I did because I kissed him this morning.

Make sure you tell Scratchy I made an appointment for him so he could get picked at too. And no treats for you Scratchy because you don’t like going to the vet.

That’s what you get Scratchy, for walking away in the middle of a kiss.

Where is Nemo?

Snow falling on BongoSome of my friends in the eastern part of the States have had a visit by someone called Nemo. Nemo seems to like snow because he brought a lot of that with him. The people there are buried in snow, but some of my dog friends are having a great time playing in it.

I thought it would be  fun to have some of that snow to play in, so I went out to see if Nemo had stopped by here.

I think maybe Nemo shook his head this direction because a lot of white flakes landed on top of me. They kind of look like dandruff. I think maybe Nemo needs to use a new shampoo.

Nemo, you might want to try some of mine. It works pretty good.

I figured Nemo was getting pretty close if he could shake his head and have stuff land here so I went looking, but I didn’t have much luck.

Bongo sniffing a little snow in a pine tree

Nemo, are you hiding in this tree? I think you left something behind.

Wait a minute. I think I found something.

Bongo eating snow from a small snow patch

No this doesn’t look like it came from Nemo either. Maybe from one of his little brothers. A very tiny little brother.

This is no good. I’m very jealous of my doggie friends that have all that snow to play in while I’m having no luck.

What, person?

I’m lucky I can’t find Nemo? Why would you say that?

If anybody out there sees Nemo, could you tell him to stop by and see me, and bring some of his snow? And not just what he shakes out of his head either.

I mean it. I’m really serious about finding Nemo.

P.S. My person and I send our prayers to everyone who is digging their way out of the storm.
