About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

A New Mischief Maker

Scratchy and LunchWhile I’ve been the perfect dog lately, Scratchy has been getting into mischief. Just look at him. My person was getting ready to make lunch and after she got all the stuff out she walked away. And what does Scratchy do? He gets right up on the counter and tries to help himself to lunch.

.

.

.

.

Scratchy and Yogurt

You’d think Scratchy owned the place the way he’s sticking his nose into that yogurt container.

But Scratchy didn’t stop there. No siree!

Scratchy and Frog

After Scratchy helped himself to my person’s lunch he snuck into the bathroom and tried to eat the frog.

But I’m having none of that. I’m going to protect that frog from that mischievous cat Scratchy.

Frog Scratchy Bongo

Get down you evil cat. Leave that poor frog alone!

Scratchy Attacks Bongo

Never mind. Hey frog, you’re on your own this time.

What that frog has to go through. I bet my person’s going to have to clean his container out after that episode.

Lifted Up

The Brazen Serpent, by Benjamin West; among the overthrown, an unmistakable reference to the Laocoön (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Hey person, were those Israelites finally happy after Moses struck that rock and got water to come out?

What do you mean, they had more problems? It seems like one thing or another is always happening to them.

They wanted to go through Edom and the king wouldn’t let them? What’s with that king? Doesn’t he know who he’s dealing with? After all, those Israelites have me on their side.

Yes, I’m listening person.

So the Israelites had to go along the route to the Red Sea in order to go around Edom, and they grew impatient and started complaining again.

Weren’t they going the wrong direction? I might start complaining too.

I am listening.

The Israelites complained that there was no bread or water, and they were really sick of that manna stuff.

I guess the Lord was sick of their complaining because He sent venomous snakes among them and some people got bit and died.

I guess it takes a lot to get those people’s attention.

The people went to Moses and admitted that they’d sinned against him and against the Lord, and asked Moses to pray to the Lord to take the snakes away.

Then the Lord told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. When anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake he would live.

That must have been some magical snake. Maybe we should get one like that.

What do you mean we have one like that in a way?

Jesus was lifted up like the snake? Jesus isn’t a snake.

Oh. Jesus said that just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert He would be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.

But person, it’s almost Christmas time when Jesus comes as a little baby. Why would anyone lift up a little baby like that?

Jesus grew up? Really? I hope he doesn’t grow up too fast. I want to make sure to get my Christmas presents.

***

Oh, I almost forgot. Speaking of being lifted up, I got so excited about Christmas coming that I almost forgot that I have something to celebrate today. Today is National Mutt Day. So I thought I would show you a picture of one of my favorite mutts.

Bongo

Shouldn’t I get some presents for National Mutt Day? After all, this is my special day.

Those Pesky Scrub Jays

Scrub JayWe have lots of birds on my trails, but these are one of the peskiest. I’m surprised they don’t gang up with those pesky squirrels. They’re two of a kind. They’ll hang out in a tree above you and make all kinds of obnoxious noises – hoping to get your attention. But if you even begin to get close to them they’re flying off, playing a game of keep away.

.

.

.

Scrub Jay

I do have to say that they have one good quality. They like to harass cats more than dogs. They try to get the cats to climb up after them – and then when that cat is just within reach – off they go.

Most adult cats know better and ignore those pesky birds, but my person told me a story about two kittens she used to have.

They climbed up a tree in the backyard trying to get at one of those pesky birds. They got way out on some of the furthest limbs, but of course they couldn’t get near that bird.

Well, that bird thought it was so funny that he told all his friends. Pretty soon there were about thirty birds around that tree harassing those two kittens out on a limb. My person had never seen so many scrub-jays in one place before.

I guess that just goes to show you, if you’re going to go out on a limb you’d better know what you’re doing. Otherwise you might become the laughing stock of the whole bird world.

Cows, Goats, and Barns

Van painted like a cowI’ve seen a few strange things on my trails lately, but now the parking lot to my trails is getting stranger and stranger.

.

.

.

.

What’s this in my parking lot? I think the car is really confused. Is it trying to be a cow or something? This car might need to go into counseling.

Side of van with a farm painting

This car does have a split personality. Only part of it is a cow.

But who’s that inside? A goat? I’ve never seen a goat on my trails before.

And that barn thing. There aren’t any barns near my trails? Well, there weren’t any barns here.

Hey, I think there’s someone inside this vehicle. Besides the goat, that is.

Bongo looking in the open car door

Is anyone in there? I’m looking for a barn. I’ve never seen a barn before. Is it in there?

Bongo getting loves in front of the Gentle Barn van

I didn’t find a barn but I got loves. And that’s even better.

Then I learned all about the Gentle Barn and why that car looks like it’s so mixed up.

The Gentle Barn is where all kinds of rescue animals go to be taken care of. And then kids who kind of need rescuing too get to go love on those animals, and the animals love on them.

If my forever home and my trails weren’t such great places I think that Gentle Barn would be an awesome place to be. Check out their website www.gentlebarn.org. That place is really cool.

But I wish they would have brought that barn to my trails. It would have been great fun to play with cows and turkeys and llamas.

What? Llamas spit?

Well, never mind then. Maybe they have some sheep.

I’m in a Book!

Bongo with his leash tangled in a bushI am so excited! My buddy Snoopy, Master Class Mischief Maker, has written a book. And he invited his friends to be in it.

And since I’m one of Snoopy’s friends, I’m in the book. I saved one of my special adventures for the book, so none of you have seen it on my blog. I almost got myself into real trouble on this one, but everything turned out cool in the end. And I didn’t get into trouble at all. I used a few of Snoopy’s Mischief Master Class Rules and they worked.

The book just came out as an eBook through Amazon. I talked my person into buying it and made her read the whole thing to me today. It’s got several of my friends in it too, and they’re all full of mischief. My person didn’t complain about paying for the book because half of the profits are going to help therapy dogs. We both thought that was a good thing to support.

The book’s even coming out in paperback really soon. I can’t wait because I’m planning to give it to my cousin dogs for Christmas and to some of my neighbors too. When you read about my adventure in it you’ll realize why I want to give it to my neighbors.

Hey, do I need a new hat now? I think I just became Book SalesDog. What kind of hats do SalesDogs wear?

What do you mean, they don’t wear any hats? How can I be SalesDog without a hat?

Stuff on my Trails

Bike next to a bike rackI don’t get it. For some reason people have been leaving stuff all over my trails. It’s not like those litterbugs who were hanging around awhile back. This stuff looks like something people would still want. For instance, take this bike here. It’s not even stuck in the bike rack like somebody meant to leave it here. I wonder if they got off to check for messages – I know I’ve left a few here – and then forgot they’d come on a bike and started walking on my trails. That must have been a good message they found. I wish it was still here.

.

Bongo sniffing cairn with cloth on top

And look at this. Now somebody’s leaving their clothes hanging around. I wonder if it’s the same person who left the bike. I think I’ll see if I can get some clues as to who left this. I’d kind of like some advance warning if I’m going to come across a naked person on my trails.

Cloth on a rock and Bongo sniffing below the rock

More clothes! There must be a stripper on my trail and they must be really lost. I don’t think you’re supposed to take off your clothes in a place where people and dogs can find you. Maybe if I get their scent I can find them first and warn them pick up their clothes, get back on their bike, and leave.

Bongo below a bird seed hanger

Now look! I think this is a hangar. I bet this was where those clothes I found were supposed to be hung. But birds have been storing their extra seed here.

Either those birds are going to have to find a new storage place for their seeds, or that person is going to have to get dressed, or …

I hope I don’t find a naked person riding away on a bicycle, being chased by birds.

Meet the Neighbor

TobyFinally! I finally got to meet him. My new neighbor Toby.

We were heading back from our walk – my person and I, that is. And we saw one of Toby’s people out in his yard. So of course I had to go over and say hi.

And when Toby’s other person saw me there she told Toby to come out and meet me.

Bongo and Toby

We sniffed here…

Toby and Bongo

and we sniffed there.

Hey person, you left out some of those sniffing pictures. What’s the deal? Where are they?

Bongo sniffing a shoe

Not the one where I’m sniffing the shoe!

People! Sometimes they just don’t get it.

Anyway, remember that walk I took around the block the other day? Well, this time I got to take a walk around the block with Toby.

Bongo and Toby on a walk

And now I have a new neighbor – and a new friend.

Hey person, can we go for a walk with Toby again tomorrow?

Mistletoe

Mistletoe in a bushChristmas is less than a month away and I’ve got to make some plans. And I’ve noticed now that some of the leaves are falling off the bushes there’s something showing up. Something that goes really well at Christmas time, and I’m going to take advantage of it.

Mistletoe!

I think it’s been here for awhile, but that was nice of those bushes to stop covering it up so I’d notice it.

Okay person, what is it you do with mistletoe at Christmas?

Kiss the girls? They have to kiss you if you catch them under the mistletoe?

Woo woo! Check this out.

Bongo Sniffing Mistletoe

Come on girls. Over to the mistletoe. I’m waiting for my kisses.

What, person? I have to catch them under the mistletoe?

How am I going to get under this mistletoe? I mean, look at it. It’s practically on the ground.

And I for sure wouldn’t be able to get a girl under it.

What to do? What to do?

Mistletoe in a Juniper Tree

Do you think the girls will notice that mistletoe up in the tree?

Speak or Strike

English: Moses striking the rock

English: Moses striking the rock (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Hey person, after those Israelites realized they were stuck in the desert for forty years did they finally settle down and do what God said? Maybe they could find a nice oasis and settle down there for awhile.

They complained some more? I guess all that manna was getting to them.

So they complained that there was no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates in the terrible place they were in.

What are they complaining about? I’ve never had a pomegranate.

Yes, I’m listening person.

And then they complained that there was no water to drink.

Hey person, I’m running out of water here. I need my water dish filled up.

No I’m not complaining. And I’m really listening.

Moses and Aaron were getting pretty frustrated with the people but the glory of the Lord appeared to them and He told Moses to take the staff and gather the people together. Then He said to speak to the rock and it will pour out water.

Maybe I can speak to my water dish.

I am listening.

Moses and Aaron gathered the people and Moses was so upset with them that he said, “Listen you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then he struck the rock with his staff and water came pouring out.

Maybe I can push my water dish under that rock.

God was mad at Moses and Aaron? Why? He gave them water didn’t he?

Oh. They didn’t do what He said?

God told Moses to speak to the rock and he struck the rock instead. God told Moses and Aaron that they didn’t trust Him enough to honor Him as holy. And because of it they weren’t going to get to bring Israel into the Promised Land.

Hey person, if I trust God will you fill up my water dish? This story has really made me thirsty.

And then maybe I can lead those Israelites into the Promised Land, since it looks like Moses and Aaron aren’t going to finish the job.

Around the Block

Bongo on the RoadToday was such a beautiful day and it felt really good to be outside. I took my person on our usual walk on my trails and then we headed back home.

But when we got back home I wasn’t ready to go in. I hadn’t seen any dogs on my trails, and only a few people. And two of the people were on mountain bikes. It’s kind of hard to get loves from a person on a bike.

So when it came time to turn back into our driveway I balked. I wanted more walk. And actually, I was kind of hoping to find Toby outside. Toby is my new dog neighbor and I haven’t even got to meet him yet. My person got to meet him, but noooo – she couldn’t let me out to meet him.

So I took my person around the block. We don’t usually walk around the block. My trails are nicer, but it’s kind of nice to do something different for a change. And I was hoping to meet some of my dog neighbors that don’t go on my trails.

There was nobody on the street at all. No people. No dogs. Not even a cat.

So when we got back to our driveway I balked again.

But my person wouldn’t go for it.

And she’s bigger than me.

Come on person, Toby’s going to be out here any minute now.

                                          ***

Sorry Toby. As soon as someone leaves the door open I’ll come by.
