Little Black Bags

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat onDetective Dog here – and I’ve got another mystery to solve.

I’ve noticed something when I’ve been out on my trails. Little black bags.

.

.

.

.

Little black bag on top of a cairn

I see them everywhere. Like this one in plain sight.

Little black bag on the side of the trail

Look at this one. Somebody left it on the side of the trail.

Little black bag in the bushes

And this one’s hiding in the middle of some bushes. Well, it’s not really hiding. Maybe if it was summer they would have been able to conceal this here.

So now I have the evidence. Three little black bags in three days.

And the funny thing is these bags are always missing the next time I come by. Well, most of the time they’re missing. I guess sometimes somebody forgets one.

So now I’ve got to figure out what these little black bags are for. And why are they getting left on my trails?

Maybe they’re munchies in case somebody gets really hungry while they’re on my trails.

But that can’t be it. If they were munchies I’d be eating them and I don’t see anything attractive about these little black bags.

So I’ll have to look for some more clues.

What do they have in common – besides being little, and black, and bags?

I’ve got it. Flies! They all have flies buzzing around them. I wonder why.

***

Excuse me a minute – I’ve got to take a break.

***

Hey person, what are you doing with that little black bag? It looks a lot like the ones I’ve been investigating.

What are you doing, person? Don’t put that in the little black bag. I left that there for a reason.

Now you’re getting me upset and it’s messing up my whole investigation.

Peanut Butter Jar

Bongo and a Peanut Butter JarI can’t believe it. I’ve been so good because I know Santa is coming soon, but everyone else around here seems to be getting into mischief.

This time it’s a peanut butter jar.

I don’t know what got into that peanut butter jar – well, besides peanut butter that is.

My person left the house and I innocently checked the sink to see if there were any dishes that needed to be cleaned out. I thought I’d help my person out by washing some dishes for her.

I found this peanut butter jar in the sink and it really needed cleaning out. There was still a layer of peanut butter all over the inside of the jar. It was kind of hard standing over the sink to clean it so I took it out and into the next room where there’s a soft carpet and I could really work on cleaning that thing.

I was doing a great job with the cleanup when that jar started pulling its mischief.

You see, that jar kept some of the peanut butter where I couldn’t reach it. I tried everything – chewing on the jar, squashing it, stretching my tongue out really long – but nothing I could do would convince that jar to give up its peanut butter.

My person got mad at me when she came home, but it wasn’t my fault I didn’t get the jar all clean. If that mischievous jar hadn’t kept that peanut butter in a spot where I couldn’t get it, I would have been able to do a really great job.

But somehow I’m always the one that gets blamed.

The Package Person

Bongo getting lovesToday was a really good day. It was warm and sunny and I was lounging around in the sunny spot when I heard someone coming to the door.

I recognized the sound. Sometimes I hear her coming to the door when my person’s not home. All I can do is peak out the window (don’t tell my person because I have to get up on the couch to do that – but it’s not my fault it’s in the way) and maybe bark a time or two. Then when my person comes home she finds a package sitting at the door.

But this time my person was home and she opened the door when my friend came up to it. Well, guess what. It seems my person and this package person know each other. They used to hang out together at this place called “work.”

And this package person (my person says she’s our mail carrier) is really cool because she likes to give me loves. Loves and packages.

I wonder what’s in that package she brought me. Maybe treats – or a new squeaky toy.

What, person? What do you mean that package isn’t for me? What do you mean it’s something you ordered for my younger person?

Then I think you’d better get on your computer right now and order me some packages. But make sure the delivery is spread out so I get a new one every day. And make sure you’re home when they come so I get my loves too.

Woo woo! Packages and loves every single day. What more could any dog want?

The Aliens Have Landed

White dome in SedonaSedona, where I live is well known for aliens and for UFO sightings. Personally, I’ve never seen an alien or a UFO. I guess they don’t hang out on my trails.

But this time the evidence is clear. There is no doubt about it. The aliens left one of their UFOs behind. They just parked it and left it. It’s been hanging around for days now.

I’m not sure where the aliens went though. Maybe they went on one of those Pink Jeep Tours. Or maybe they went on a helicopter ride because their spaceship couldn’t swoop down those canyons the way a helicopter can.

What if they went on a hike and got lost? I could go sniffing them out – but what does an alien smell like? I guess I could sniff until I smell something I don’t recognize. That would be the aliens.

Whatever they’re doing, I guess they’ve been doing it for too long because my person told me their spaceship collapsed.

This could be really serious because that means those aliens are living here now. And if I ever run across them I’m going to have to teach them a few lessons.

The first lesson is that every dog you meet must be given treats.

The second lesson is – oh, I forgot. Just repeat the first lesson over and over again.

Big BoomTheory

Big BoomThis is a really true mystery. I’m not the only one looking into this, but I think I need my Detective Dog hat for sure. They’re gonna need my help.

Here’s what happened…

A couple of days ago my person and I were on our walk on my trails like we do every day. Nothing unusual was happening. It was a nice day and we met lots of dogs and people.

We were headed back toward home when all of a sudden…       it happened.

A big loud boom! It sounded like thunder.

And then there was another boom, right behind the first one.

I was scared. Those of you who have been my friends for awhile know that I don’t like thunder at all.

But my person told me that it couldn’t possibly be thunder because there were no thunder clouds in the sky.

What does she know? It sure sounded like thunder.

Anyway, I was really glad to get back home and safe inside my house.

                                                ***

Well, yesterday my person found out something about those big, loud booms.

You know what she found out? She found out that nobody knows what they are.

And just to prove that I’m not getting some strange kind of thunder fear syndrome left over from all the storms we had last summer I’m going to share the articles my person found about those booms.

Here’s an article from the Verde Independent and here’s another one from CBS 5 News.

I’m heading out now to offer my help with this investigation, so if I don’t come back by tomorrow —could somebody please bring me some earplugs?

Water in the Puddle

Bongo and PuddleIt’s definitely time to put on my Detective Dog hat again. You see this puddle here? Well, we haven’t had any rain for weeks and this puddle should not be here. I have no idea where it came from or what it’s doing here.

I guess I’ll look for clues to see if I can figure out what’s going on.

.

.

.

Bongo Looking up the Wash above the puddle

Maybe there’s some water coming from that wash up there.

Nope, don’t see any.

Bongo at the place where a puddle used to be

Nope, this puddle’s still missing. I thought maybe my favorite puddle would give me some clues, but as you can see, it disappeared.

It’s been gone for a very long time. I sure would like to know where it goes to.

Bongo sniffing where the puddle used to be

I’ll check the missing puddle for clues anyway. Maybe some water will start gurgling up and I’ll have my puddle back again.

***

I give up. I’m getting nowhere with this. Puddles are so unpredictable. They’re here and then there not here. I just can’t figure them out.

Bongo watering where the puddle used to be

I might have to fill this one up myself.

National Cookie Day

CookiesDid someone say cookies? It’s what? National Cookie Day?

This is awesome! There’s a holiday for cookies!

So what are you doing, person?

You’re celebrating the holiday by starting your Christmas cookie baking?

You’re for sure making some cookies for me, aren’t you?

What do you mean, those are people cookies? It’s National Cookie Day. Shouldn’t I get some cookies too?

Bongo and Cookies on the Counter

Just look at those delicious cookies. There’s lots of them there. You wouldn’t miss just one.

There’s only a little bit of chocolate. I’ll eat around the chocolate and leave it for you. I promise.

Mouse Cookies and M&M Cookies

Wait a minute! You made mouse cookies? Are you making cookies for Scratchy and not for me?

You’d better be telling me the truth. If I don’t get cookies then Scratchy better not either.

Bongo and a bag of dog cookies

For me? These are for me? Seriously?

Bongo Eating Cookie

I love National Cookie Day.

Hey person. National Cookie Day isn’t over yet. You still have time to make some homemade dog cookies.

A New Mischief Maker

Scratchy and LunchWhile I’ve been the perfect dog lately, Scratchy has been getting into mischief. Just look at him. My person was getting ready to make lunch and after she got all the stuff out she walked away. And what does Scratchy do? He gets right up on the counter and tries to help himself to lunch.

.

.

.

.

Scratchy and Yogurt

You’d think Scratchy owned the place the way he’s sticking his nose into that yogurt container.

But Scratchy didn’t stop there. No siree!

Scratchy and Frog

After Scratchy helped himself to my person’s lunch he snuck into the bathroom and tried to eat the frog.

But I’m having none of that. I’m going to protect that frog from that mischievous cat Scratchy.

Frog Scratchy Bongo

Get down you evil cat. Leave that poor frog alone!

Scratchy Attacks Bongo

Never mind. Hey frog, you’re on your own this time.

What that frog has to go through. I bet my person’s going to have to clean his container out after that episode.

Those Pesky Scrub Jays

Scrub JayWe have lots of birds on my trails, but these are one of the peskiest. I’m surprised they don’t gang up with those pesky squirrels. They’re two of a kind. They’ll hang out in a tree above you and make all kinds of obnoxious noises – hoping to get your attention. But if you even begin to get close to them they’re flying off, playing a game of keep away.

.

.

.

Scrub Jay

I do have to say that they have one good quality. They like to harass cats more than dogs. They try to get the cats to climb up after them – and then when that cat is just within reach – off they go.

Most adult cats know better and ignore those pesky birds, but my person told me a story about two kittens she used to have.

They climbed up a tree in the backyard trying to get at one of those pesky birds. They got way out on some of the furthest limbs, but of course they couldn’t get near that bird.

Well, that bird thought it was so funny that he told all his friends. Pretty soon there were about thirty birds around that tree harassing those two kittens out on a limb. My person had never seen so many scrub-jays in one place before.

I guess that just goes to show you, if you’re going to go out on a limb you’d better know what you’re doing. Otherwise you might become the laughing stock of the whole bird world.

Cows, Goats, and Barns

Van painted like a cowI’ve seen a few strange things on my trails lately, but now the parking lot to my trails is getting stranger and stranger.

.

.

.

.

What’s this in my parking lot? I think the car is really confused. Is it trying to be a cow or something? This car might need to go into counseling.

Side of van with a farm painting

This car does have a split personality. Only part of it is a cow.

But who’s that inside? A goat? I’ve never seen a goat on my trails before.

And that barn thing. There aren’t any barns near my trails? Well, there weren’t any barns here.

Hey, I think there’s someone inside this vehicle. Besides the goat, that is.

Bongo looking in the open car door

Is anyone in there? I’m looking for a barn. I’ve never seen a barn before. Is it in there?

Bongo getting loves in front of the Gentle Barn van

I didn’t find a barn but I got loves. And that’s even better.

Then I learned all about the Gentle Barn and why that car looks like it’s so mixed up.

The Gentle Barn is where all kinds of rescue animals go to be taken care of. And then kids who kind of need rescuing too get to go love on those animals, and the animals love on them.

If my forever home and my trails weren’t such great places I think that Gentle Barn would be an awesome place to be. Check out their website www.gentlebarn.org. That place is really cool.

But I wish they would have brought that barn to my trails. It would have been great fun to play with cows and turkeys and llamas.

What? Llamas spit?

Well, never mind then. Maybe they have some sheep.
