Real Men Rescue Cats

Real Men Rescue CatsI was taking my person to my trails and had just about gotten there when I saw something on the back of a car in the parking lot – and I stopped in my tracks.

“Real Men Rescue Cats” Now what kind of a sign is that? And what would that sign be doing here – by my trails. This is a dog and people trail. I don’t see cats on these trails. And if a cat ever tries to sneak over here from one of those houses across the street I chase that cat back to its house.

Sometimes I see real men on my trails. I even get loves from some of them. But I never see them rescuing any cats.

So what’s a real dog to do? At least I don’t have to rescue any cats.

Should I tell those real men on my trails that there aren’t any cats here and they need to go somewhere else to find them?

But then those real men wouldn’t be on my trails to give me loves.

I could still get loves from the real women because they wouldn’t need to go rescue cats.

Wait a minute! What am I thinking? Rescuing cats? Was I almost getting a soft spot for those cats that need rescuing?

Oops. Please nobody tell Scratchy about that. I’m sure glad he doesn’t read my blog.

The Bone Tree

Tree with the sun shining throughThere’s a special tree near the beginning of my trails. Well, actually there are two special trees.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

One is the peanut tree.

That’s where those pesky squirrels keep all their peanuts until they get hungry for them. I’m just waiting to catch one of those pesky squirrels under there.

Squirrel in a tree

But that’s not the tree I’m talking about. The other special tree is the bone tree. I found it when my person wanted to go back by it to take pictures of some flowers. What a treat! There are bones everywhere under there.

But my person wouldn’t let me take any of them home with me.

And now she won’t even let me go back near that tree.

But something’s been happening lately. Some of those bones have been finding their way out near my trail.

I don’t know what dog in his right mind would put a bone there and just leave it. But that’s what happened.

But now I have a real dilemma.

My person won’t let me take the bones I find.

Maybe I can nonchalantly (did I say that word?) walk by that bone and quietly snatch it up as I keep walking along.

That didn’t work either. She made me drop it.

Come on, person. Let me have that bone!

Bongo trying to get a bone

I guess I’m one of those dogs I was talking about who’s not in his right mind.

No! No! Let me have the bone!

Fuzzballs

Field of FuzzballsI don’t know what my person is doing now. We’ve run out of flowers for her to take pictures of, so here she is taking pictures of a field of fuzzballs.

What good are these things? They aren’t a pretty color, they aren’t good for sniffing, and they’re no good to eat. I think my person needs to put her camera away.

I’ve got to get on to some good smells. I’ve got to find out what all my friends are up to, and I’m not getting anywhere here.

Fuzzballs close up

Okay, that’s enough. How can I convince my person that she’s taken enough pictures?

Oh look. A distraction.

Hey person, over here. This bush still has some yellow on it. Maybe you should take some pictures over here.

Bongo by a bush of yellow

It worked! She’s over looking at those yellow things – and by the time she realizes that they’ve turned more brown than yellow…

I will have taken care of her picture taking for the day.

Bongo watering a fuzzball bush

Come on, person. Time to go.

Nurse Bongo

Bongo Kissing his Person's AnkleI was so bummed yesterday. My person had twisted her ankle the day before and she was limping, and moaning, and saying it hurt really bad.

So yesterday morning she said I wasn’t going to get my walk.

What do you mean I’m not getting my walk? I always get my walk.

Not only that, but my person said I had to take care of her.

Well, I take care of her by barking if a stranger comes into the yard, or by keeping Scratchy out of her room so he won’t bother her. But what does she mean – take care of her? Do I have to get a new hat now – a Nurse Dog hat?

I’ve never been Nurse Dog before, but I’ll do anything to get my walk. So I kissed my person’s ankle, and I guess I did a good job being Nurse Dog because my person felt so good she got up and left me – alone. Well, alone with Scratchy. She got in her car and left.

See if I ever put on a Nurse Dog hat again.

But then my person came back and said she felt good enough to take me for a walk. Woo woo!

I’m not sure why, but my person walked kind of slow. I didn’t mind though because it gave me extra time to get some good sniffs in.

But now I’m thinking, if my Nurse Dog skills got my person better that fast, maybe what I need isn’t a Nurse Dog hat at all. It’s something else.

What about Miracle Healer Dog hat? Come on over to my house. I’ll heal you pronto.

Wait a minute. I don’t need a hat for that at all. But I could do with a big tent in the yard.

Et Tu, Brute?

Bongo looking at gray skies while on the trailSomething is really strange out on my trails today. I can’t quite put my paws on it – but something is different. I think I’ll stay close to my person. Things just don’t feel quite right.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Thunder Mountain and gray skies

I think I’ve got it. The sky isn’t the same. It’s been blue for a long time now. I’d almost forgotten it could ever be any other color. But it isn’t blue today. Look how gray it is.

My person says all this gray is coming from a storm called Brutus that’s on its way.

Brutus! What kind of a name is that for a storm?

The Weather Channel named it that?

I’ve heard of thunderstorms, and snowstorms, and rainstorms, and hailstorms. I’ve even heard of windstorms. But Brutus storms? This could be really dangerous. Is Brutus going to be falling out of the sky? What would that be like? Or maybe there will be lots of Brutuses falling.

Faint hills in the background

Hey person, I can barely see those hills. I think Brutus is on its way. We’d better get out of here.

Storm covering Thunder Mountain

Oh, no! It’s covering up Thunder Mountain now. We’re surrounded!

Wait a minute. I think I’m getting wet. These little Brutuses that are hitting me seem a lot like rain. Do you think the Weather Channel knew what they were talking about when they named this storm Brutus?

Don’t Sniff the Cactus

Bongo and a Prickly PearToday was tour guide day on my trails. And I got loves for payment – even though I let my person give the people directions.

I would have given the directions if she’d let me, but I couldn’t get a word in edgewise – and she wouldn’t let me off my leash. I could have led them right up the path.

We got the first group on their way and then we met some more people. They were from Chicago. I’m not sure where Chicago is, but it must be a strange place because they don’t have any cactus there.

And one of those people asked my person a question. “How do you keep a dog from sniffing cactus?”

She should have asked me that because I have the answer. It only takes one time.

But really, dogs don’t need to sniff cactus because nobody leaves their messages on them. Well, maybe once – but then they never do it again.

So if I do notice a message on a cactus I know it’s probably from a Chicago dog, or a new pup – but never from one of my friends.

You see that tree over there?

Scents on Sugarloaf

That’s where all the messages are.

And that’s why we Arizona dogs don’t sniff cactus.

Trail Lights

Manzanita with light shining through loose barkThat’s really weird. Someone took some orange Halloween lights and put them on this manzanita bush, way out here on my trails. They didn’t even pick a bush next to the trail. They had to climb way under this tree to get them on there. If I wasn’t so close to the ground I would have walked right by and never noticed them.

Why would somebody do that?

.

.

.

.

.

Manzanita with light shining through the loose trunk bark

And look at this bush. They didn’t even put the lights on the side you could see the best. Maybe they’re not decorating for us people and dogs that walk by on my trails. Do you think they did this for the squirrels and the bunnies? Or maybe those invisible creatures that were hanging around here on Halloween? I hope they’re not still around.

Manzanita with light shining through the bark

Wow! Look at this one. It’s really lit up. I think I’m safe now. All those bright lights probably scared those creatures away.

Bongo sniffing a bush with yellow leaves

Check this one out. It’s right on the trail, but the lights seem to be fading. I hope it already scared all the creatures away because I think it’s running out of electricity.

Ghost Cars

Empty Trailhead Parking LotYesterday was Halloween and there was not one car in the parking lot by my trails. This was absolutely not possible on a day like this. It was sunny and warm – the perfect kind of day. So I’m sure there were cars parked there – the kind you can’t see.

Ghost cars.

I was a little nervous going through that parking lot – but nothing happened.

I expected to see a lot of people on my trails on a day like this. Even ghost cars have to be driven there by someone.

Person in white on the trail

But I only saw one person – and she was all white. I think she might have been a ghost.

With all this going on I thought maybe I’d see Ghost Dog, but no such luck. He must have been invisible too.

And then, to top it off – there weren’t even any litterbugs visible. Ghost litterbugs could be really dangerous.

Empty where the litter bugs hang out

Litter could appear out of nowhere. Right before my eyes. Yikes! I’d better get out of here!

Finally, after all those ghosts and invisible things, I found someone that I could see.

Quail on a fence

But that quail must have thought it was invisible, because it let us get really close to it. That’s just not normal.

What’s That Chattering?

Squirrel up on a wireWe were finishing up our trail walk and heading back to the street – but not at the normal place where we usually hit the street. I heard somebody chattering at me. I looked everywhere and couldn’t figure out where that chattering was coming from. Until I finally figured there was nowhere else to look. And the chattering came again.

With the corner of my eye I caught some movement above me – and there he was. Looking at me. That pesky squirrel.

.

Squirrel looking down from the wire

Come on down here squirrel! You think you’re so brave way up there on that wire. Come on down and face me on the ground.

You know what that squirrel did? He turned and started running down the wire – away from me.

Squirrel running along the wire

I knew that pesky squirrel wasn’t brave enough. He ran down the wire and never did come back. I bet he went looking for another dog to harass.

He was probably afraid to go messing with me. Afraid I might fly right up to that wire and go after him.

Super Dog

After all, I am Super Dog.

Pine Nuts

Pine Tree with ConesWhat do you mean, person? Food grows on my trails? You mean besides the running, hopping, and flying kind?

No person, I’d never eat any of those little furry or feathery things. I’m a good dog. Remember?

But what kind of food is there besides that?

It’s in those pine trees? I don’t want to eat pine cones, and pine needles would be totally yucky. You must be thinking of some other kind of tree. And those other kind don’t grow on my trails.

Pine Cones

What? There’s food in the pine cones. Pine nuts? And you can take the shells off of the nuts and eat them?

Pine Cone and Pine Nuts on the Ground

Woo woo! Look, I found some of those nuts right here on the ground. I wonder why some forest critter hasn’t eaten them yet?

Bongo checking out dried nuts

Yuck! Gross! Ptouie!

Hey person, there’s something wrong with these nuts. They’re all dried out. No wonder those forest critters left them on the ground. We’ve got to return these back to the forest for a refund.
