Ghost Cars

Empty Trailhead Parking LotYesterday was Halloween and there was not one car in the parking lot by my trails. This was absolutely not possible on a day like this. It was sunny and warm – the perfect kind of day. So I’m sure there were cars parked there – the kind you can’t see.

Ghost cars.

I was a little nervous going through that parking lot – but nothing happened.

I expected to see a lot of people on my trails on a day like this. Even ghost cars have to be driven there by someone.

Person in white on the trail

But I only saw one person – and she was all white. I think she might have been a ghost.

With all this going on I thought maybe I’d see Ghost Dog, but no such luck. He must have been invisible too.

And then, to top it off – there weren’t even any litterbugs visible. Ghost litterbugs could be really dangerous.

Empty where the litter bugs hang out

Litter could appear out of nowhere. Right before my eyes. Yikes! I’d better get out of here!

Finally, after all those ghosts and invisible things, I found someone that I could see.

Quail on a fence

But that quail must have thought it was invisible, because it let us get really close to it. That’s just not normal.

What’s That Chattering?

Squirrel up on a wireWe were finishing up our trail walk and heading back to the street – but not at the normal place where we usually hit the street. I heard somebody chattering at me. I looked everywhere and couldn’t figure out where that chattering was coming from. Until I finally figured there was nowhere else to look. And the chattering came again.

With the corner of my eye I caught some movement above me – and there he was. Looking at me. That pesky squirrel.

.

Squirrel looking down from the wire

Come on down here squirrel! You think you’re so brave way up there on that wire. Come on down and face me on the ground.

You know what that squirrel did? He turned and started running down the wire – away from me.

Squirrel running along the wire

I knew that pesky squirrel wasn’t brave enough. He ran down the wire and never did come back. I bet he went looking for another dog to harass.

He was probably afraid to go messing with me. Afraid I might fly right up to that wire and go after him.

Super Dog

After all, I am Super Dog.

Pine Nuts

Pine Tree with ConesWhat do you mean, person? Food grows on my trails? You mean besides the running, hopping, and flying kind?

No person, I’d never eat any of those little furry or feathery things. I’m a good dog. Remember?

But what kind of food is there besides that?

It’s in those pine trees? I don’t want to eat pine cones, and pine needles would be totally yucky. You must be thinking of some other kind of tree. And those other kind don’t grow on my trails.

Pine Cones

What? There’s food in the pine cones. Pine nuts? And you can take the shells off of the nuts and eat them?

Pine Cone and Pine Nuts on the Ground

Woo woo! Look, I found some of those nuts right here on the ground. I wonder why some forest critter hasn’t eaten them yet?

Bongo checking out dried nuts

Yuck! Gross! Ptouie!

Hey person, there’s something wrong with these nuts. They’re all dried out. No wonder those forest critters left them on the ground. We’ve got to return these back to the forest for a refund.

Mischief in the Air

Scratchy wearing a cone hatIt was so cool this weekend. There was mischief in the air and for once it wasn’t me. I got to enjoy it though. And I didn’t get in trouble.

My younger person came home this weekend. And he told me he missed me – and he even let me in his room.

But the best thing is – he brought a hat for Scratchy. He came across a little cup and decided to turn it into a hat. Well, obviously it was a hat for Scratchy because it wouldn’t fit any of the rest of us.

I don’t think Scratchy appreciated his gift, but it sure was fun watching him try to get it off.

Scratchy, hats aren’t all that bad. You should wear it for awhile. We can have a party.

See, I still have my hat left over from the dog party. I’ll even put it on for you.

Bongo in his Party Hat

What do you mean it turned my eyes two different colors?

Scratchy, I think we need to take off our hats now. This one’s giving away my party secrets.

Sibling Rivalry

English: Miriam and Aaron complain against Mos...

English: Miriam and Aaron complain against Moses, engraving from “The Bible and Its Story Taught by One Thousand Picture Lessons, vol. 2”, edited by Charles F. Horne and Julius A. Bewer, published by Francis R. Niglutsch, New York, 1908. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I thought Moses and his brother and sister were all grown up. You mean grownups make fun of each other too?

Okay, I’ll listen to the story.

Moses’ sister Miriam and his brother Aaron talked bad about Moses because he had married a Cushite woman.

Were they jealous of her? I bet they were.

I’m listening. Really.

God heard Miriam and Aaron talk bad about Moses and He said to them, “Come out to the Tent of Meeting, all three of you.”

Oh, oh. They’re in trouble now.

The Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and said to Aaron and Miriam that normally He reveals Himself to a prophet in visions and dreams. But Moses is faithful and He speaks to him face to face and clearly, rather than in riddles.

Oh. That wife thing was just an excuse, wasn’t it? I’d be jealous if God talked more to my brother too.

Then God asked Miriam and Aaron why they weren’t afraid to speak against His faithful servant Moses.

Oops. I guess they were told.

Yes, I’m still listening.

The Lord was mad at Miriam and Aaron and when He left the Tent Miriam was leprous. Aaron felt bad and asked Moses not to hold their sin against them.

So Moses cried out to the Lord and asked Him to heal Miriam.

I guess the Lord wanted to teach Miriam a lesson first because He told Moses to put her in time out outside the camp for seven days and then she could be brought back.

That’s a long time out.

So all the people stayed where they were while Miriam was in time out, and then they went to the Desert of Paran.

What do you mean, what lesson did I learn from that?

Well, those Israelites were all kind of in time out since they had to stay where they were while Miriam was in time out. So I guess if you want to get everyone in trouble with you, just talk bad about your brother.

Hey person, have you seen what Scratchy’s doing? He’s up to no good for sure.

Moving In

Bongo inside make-shift wallsThis is amazing. Truly amazing. I had no clue anything like this could happen. What am I going to do?

Oh. My person says I’d better explain what’s going on. I’ll put up a picture, because I hear that people say a picture is worth a thousand words.

.

.

.

.

Spot in the woods enclosed by sticks and very low walls

I guess you understand now. Just look at that. Isn’t it terrible?

What, person. I have to explain it in words? But I just put up a thousand words. It’s pretty clear to me. That picture explains everything.

Oh, all right. I guess that picture wasn’t enough. I have to give you some words anyway. I’ll try to make it less than a thousand though.

That place you see in the picture – with the walls and the doorframe and the rocks to sit on – is where the litter bugs hang out.

It looks like those litter bugs are moving in permanently. This is terrible! Truly terrible!

What am I going to do?

I might have to move in myself to keep those litter bugs away.

Bongo Checking out the House

Well, I’ll be. Those litter bugs picked up most of their litter. Maybe if all litter bugs made houses over their trash piles we’d have less litter in the world.

Woo woo! I’ll have to promote that. I may have just solved the world’s trash problem.

Art Show for Dogs

Bongo Watching an ArtistToday I found more of those people on my trails with the long things and the square things. You know, those paint brush things and canvases. My person says the people are artists with the Sedona Plein Air Festival and they’re in town all week.

Well this morning my person left me home and went to see all the artists painting at the Sedona Heritage Museum. She said it was a show for people, not dogs. I think she’s wrong and she should have taken me.

But three of those artists are pretty special because they came to my trails to do a show just for us dogs. They let my person hang around and watch, but I don’t think she would have been allowed if it wasn’t for me being there too.

I made two new dog friends and we got our own special show.

.

Two Dogs with Plein Air Artist

I’m not sure though if my new friends got tired, or they liked the lady artists better, or they just found the smells on the ground to be better than the art show.

I’m going for the smells. Maybe those artists could throw a little jackrabbit scent into their paintings.

Flower Unseason

Bongo with Indian PaintbrushI’m working on another mystery, and as usual, this one has to do with my trails. You see, a couple of days ago my person and I were trekking through a part of my trails that we don’t usually go on, and we saw something strange.

We saw flowers.

That wouldn’t be so unusual in itself, except that it isn’t flower season anymore. Of course my person had to stop and take pictures of them. At least there were some weeds to munch on next to the flowers. Otherwise I would have been upset about having to wait while my person took pictures – again.

Bongo eating weeds near Indian Paintbrush

But I’m still working on that mystery. Why were those flowers there at the wrong time of year? There’s something really suspicious going on here.

Wait! Something’s coming to me. When we saw those flowers, weren’t we on our way to see the artists who were painting on my trails?

That’s why we saw those flowers – because we went a different way so we could get to where they were.

And what were those long sticks called that those artists were using?

That’s it! Paint brushes.

And what are those flowers called?

Yup. Indian Paintbrush.

Indian Paintbrush

I’ve got it! I’ve solved the mystery.

Those artists left those flowers there. They were painting pictures of red rocks and I bet that since they were in Sedona they wanted to use Sedona paintbrushes. But then when they got all the red paint they needed, they left those Indian paintbrushes in the ground.

Woo woo! Detective Dog figures it out again.

Tangled with Excitement

Bongo Tangled in his LeashI finally saw it. And I got so excited I got all wound up – and now I’m tangled up.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Bongo and a few red leaved mixed in with the green

Do you see it? You might have to look really hard. Behind me.

I’ve been looking all over for this. I’ve heard about it this time of year. Some places get tons of it, but on my trails it’s hard to find.

All the trees around here are green, and they stay green all year. The only things that have a lot of red on them are the rocks, and they stay red all the time. They don’t suddenly explode in red at certain times of the year.

So I’ve been looking everywhere for some fall colors. My person says there are some in other parts of Sedona, but on my trails they’re hard to come by.

So I’ve been looking, and I finally found the spot. It was hard to find. It’s not on the main part of my trails. But I found it.

The fall color spot.

At least, the fall color bush.

Well, the fall color part of a bush.

Anyway, here you have it.

A few read leaves

A few red leaves

Happy fall everyone!

Long Things and Square Things

Artists in the WoodsI see the strangest things on my trails sometimes, but today I found people doing strange things. Usually the people I see are busy walking on the trail, but these people weren’t. I’m not sure what they were doing, but I guess my person wanted to know too so we went over to investigate.

Sorry person, you cannot share my Detective Dog hat with me. That’s for me alone, even if you do help me with the investigation.

We wandered off the trail and went over to where these people were, and we found a bunch of guys mixing colors with long things and then wiping the long things onto some square things.

It didn’t make any sense to me but my person talked to them and found out the guys were part of the Sedona Plein Air Festival.

I’m not sure what that festival is, but I always thought we had pretty nice air here. I didn’t know it was plain. And why would people want to have a festival for plain air anyway?

We hung around for awhile and my person talked to the guys and looked at their square things with the color on them. I’m not sure what she was looking at. I think they had used up all their rags and those square things were all they had left to wipe stuff off on.

But then something happened and I decided that having a festival for our plain air wasn’t so bad after all.
