Dog Proof No More

Bongo surrounded by garbageMy people are going to be so proud of me. I learned a new trick.

I used to only be able to empty the garbage can for them when the lid didn’t go down all the way.

I waited until my people left the house so if I pulled out the wrong thing and they got mad at me I could always blame it on Scratchy. Scratchy’s a cat and cats are always up to no good.

I would pull everything I could out of the garbage can until the lid went flat again. Who wants a garbage lid to be sticking up letting all those good smells get loose? I figure my people are saving those smells for something special.

I kind of like having those special aromas around the house though, and I finally figured out how to do it.

It’s kind of tricky. If I step on this thing near the floor the lid on the garbage can pops up.

But here comes the hard part. I have to keep stepping on that little thing at the same time I’m reaching in to grab the garbage. If I’m not careful the lid comes plop down right on my head.

But it’s all worth it because I usually manage to get some good garbage out, just waiting for me to chew it up and waft in those wonderful aromas. (Did I say that?)

And when my people get home – and they look at me with that stern look – I only have one thing to say.

Scratchy did it!

Depend on God

Depend on God dog craftCheck this craft out that my person is doing with her Sunday school kids. Isn’t it cool? I think they should do this craft every week. It’s the best craft ever.

D.O.G. stands for me and it also stands for Depend On God. Hey person, since I’m a dog does that mean I depend on God all the time? If I depend on God will He give me one of those big bones like the dog in the craft has?

I can depend on God for a big bone.

What? I’m supposed to what?

Oh yeah, I’m supposed to be listening to a Bible story now.

They had battles in the Bible? Are they exciting?

Oh, I get it. When people depended on God He helped them win the battles. Did they give their dogs big juicy bones when they won?

Okay, I’ll listen.

King Asa was a king of Judah who depended on God. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and commanded Judah to seek the Lord. They had peace in the land and were able to build up and fortify their cities and towns, and to prosper.

King Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men and they all had large shields and spears.

That sounds pretty scary. I bet no one could beat them.

What happened? Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an even bigger army and three hundred chariots? Oh no!

Asa must have been pretty brave because he went out to meet that big old army and took up battle positions.

What’s going to happen, person?

I am listening.

Asa called out to the Lord his God and asked for help against that big army. And you know what?

The Lord struck down those mean old Cushites and they ran away. And Asa and his army chased them and got lots of plunder.

What’s plunder? Is that like big, juicy bones?

I’m hungry now, person.

They did what? They attacked the herdsmen’s camps and carried off sheep, goats, and camels.

Wow! I bet they needed lots of shepherd dogs to help bring those sheep back. It’s a good thing they got all those juicy bones.

Don’t Leave it Behind

Bongo in front of pad with handlesStrange things keep showing up in my trail lost and found. Check this thing out. It looks like a giant briefcase. I’m not sure if that’s what it is, but if I find a giant suit and tie a ways up my trails I’ll know that’s what it is.

Maybe a salesman came here, wanting to sell feather dusters to all the people on my trails – after all there is a lot of dust here. But when he got to the trailhead he realized nobody was waiting there for him and he’d have to go hiking to find people.

Or maybe a business man got the directions for his corporate meeting mixed up. He got to the trailhead and had to go looking for the meeting.

It’s a what, person? A sleeping pad? You mean someone’s been sleeping on my trails again? I wonder if the person is related to the one who left their sleeping bag here awhile ago.

Is anyone looking right now?

Bongo Looking Around

This’ll teach people not to sleep on my trails.

Bongo Wetting the Pad

I don’t want this to come across wrong, but I think this is appropriate. This post is for Trevor, a recently lost friend from Collies of the Meadow.

I’m Famous

BongoI’m really getting famous. People I’ve never met before know who I am. It would be kind of embarrassing if it wasn’t so much fun.

I was walking along my trails with my person and I was a little way ahead or her. We were coming up on an intersecting trail and a lady came jogging toward me.

Suddenly the lady said, “Bongo!” as if I was her long lost friend and started giving me loves.

Woo woo! This is so cool. Loves that I didn’t ask for from someone I’ve never met before.

Hey person, I bet that never happened to you.

What, person? What are you saying?

She knew me why?

No way.

My person says the other day when I ran off took a walk by myself this lady was on my trails with her dogs and my person asked her to keep an eye out for me.

My person says the lady was happy to see that I was found.

Hey person, I was never lost. I knew where I was the whole time.

And I don’t think that was the same lady. I’m sure the one who gave me loves has been reading my blog and recognized me from my pictures.

Strange Thunder

BongoThis morning I really thought the thunder season was upon me. It startled me out of my sleep. I woke up because some of the normal sounds in the house stopped. The fan that my younger person runs at night stopped running and he never gets up that time of the morning. The house was silent – except for a few unusual beeps that I don’t hear very often.

Then all of a sudden I heard a loud crack. I was convinced that thunder was on its way – ready to attack me at any minute.

I got up and tried to figure out how I would escape it if it made that sound again. By now it was beginning to smell too. An electrical kind of smell filled the air – way stronger than a regular thunderstorm. I really started getting worried.

Then the normal noises in our house returned – the loud crack didn’t come back – and the electric smell finally faded.

Whew!

My person said the loud crack sounded like a gunshot, but is also the sound a transformer makes sometimes when it blows.

Transformers? Aren’t transformers those robot things that change? Maybe it was a good thing that one of them blew up.

Tumbleweed Wash

Bongo and TumbleweedsWhat are these things in the wash on my trails? We haven’t had any rain in weeks. Nothing much is growing. Even the cacti aren’t very happy. Where did these green things come from?

They’re what, person? Tumbleweeds? What did they do, just tumble in here?

We must really be living in the Wild West if we’ve got tumbleweeds. These don’t look like tumbleweeds though.

You mean they’re gonna get way bigger than this? And when they’re big enough they’ll go tumbling off when the wind blows?

Sometimes they what? They blow across the highway on windy days? You’ve even driven into big tumbleweeds that were blowing across the highway?

Stupid tumbleweeds. Why would they cross the road when a car’s coming? Shouldn’t they wait for the light to change.

I think I’d better train these tumbleweeds right while they’re still little.

Now little tumbleweeds, remember to look both ways before you cross the wash.

Litter Bugs

Bongo checking out litterI am so upset. My trails are usually kept really clean, but the other day I found that stuff left by the crack creatures – and now this. And there aren’t even any cracks around this part of my trails.

So who can be leaving this stuff?

They’re obviously friends of the crack creatures – or – maybe they’re not.

Maybe they’re having a littering duel. To see who can litter the most.

This is terrible! This means I could be finding more litter on my trails. I’m going to have to do something about this.

I know! I’ll get one of those litter bugs. Or maybe a whole army of litter bugs. They get rid of litter, don’t they?

They could go wandering along my trails and eat all the litter they find. The way things are going lately they would find plenty to eat.

There’s just one thing I still have to figure out.

Once the crack creatures and those other guys run out of litter to leave on my trails – what do I do with the litter bugs?

Color the Sky

Bongo on the TrailI was walking along my trails today minding my own business when I looked up in the sky and saw something strange. White things.

I’ve seen those white things in the sky before, but it’s been a long time. I was beginning to think that the only color the sky came in was blue.

Oh yeah, clouds. That’s what those white things are called. I’d almost forgotten.

.

Clouds

Oh, no! Those clouds remind me of something else that starts coming this time of year. Something I don’t like at all. Thunder!

Hey person, let’s get home. I don’t want to find any thunder out here. Some of my friends who live other places are already getting thunder. Yikes!

What? There’s no thunder in those clouds? How do you know, person?

They might not look like thunder clouds. But I don’t want to take any chances. Have you got any blue crayons, person?

Seeds, Treats, and the Word

Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Landscape with the Parable of the Sower, 1557. Image via Wikipedia

Hey person, are you going to tell me one of those Pair a Bulls again so I can make up a new story to go with it?

Woo woo! Which one are you going to tell me?

I am listening. And I’m sitting too.

My person says that Jesus told a story to a large crowd about a farmer who went out to sow his seed.

Did that farmer put seeds in his sewing machine? Wouldn’t that mess it up?

I’m listening, but…

As the farmer scattered the seed some fell along the path, was trampled on, and the birds ate it.

Oh, I get it now. He didn’t even have a sewing machine.

Yes, I’m listening.

Some of the seed fell on rock and the plants withered because they had no moisture.

All of the plants are withering around here this summer.

Okay, I’ll be quiet.

Some seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.

Yikes!

Other seed fell on good soil. It grew and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.

Wow! That’s a big crop.

Is that it? That’s the end of the story?

What? You mean the disciples didn’t even know what the story meant? Jesus had to tell them? What did he say?

The seed is the word of God? Really?

So those along the path heard the word, and then the devil came and took it away from their hearts so they wouldn’t believe and be saved.

Oops! What else?

The ones on the rock receive the word with joy, but they have no root. So they believe for awhile but when a time of testing comes they fall away.

What about the thorns?

Those hear the word but they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they don’t mature.

Am I mature, person? I am, aren’t I?

Okay, what’s the last one?

The seed on the good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

That’s got to be me. I could grow carrots. I like carrots. Maybe beans.

Is it my turn now, person? Do I get to make up a story?

Okay, here goes. A person took her dog out to play and tossed some treats to him. But the person was a lousy shot.

The first treat landed way past where the dog was. A crafty coyote ate the treat before the dog could get to it.

The next treat fell in the road and a car ran over it and smashed it to smithereens.

Another treat fell in the middle of a prickly pear cactus and the dog couldn’t get it because there were too many pricklers in the way.

But the person finally learned how to throw right and the dog caught the next treat, and got so many more treats after that that he shared the treats with his friends.

Hey person, that made me hungry. Can you get me a treat? Just make sure you aim right when you toss it to me.

Dancing Dog Party

LeighLa and BongoYesterday I was really bummed because it was National Dog Party Day and I didn’t get to have a party – or even go to one.

All I got to do was hang out around the house with my person, and she was on her computer all day. Then both my people even left me for awhile. It was Take Your Dog to Work Day and they left me home alone. With a cat!

Finally, they came home and my person decided I could take her for a walk.

We walked along my trails and didn’t see anybody. Then we arrived at my turning around point and there she was. LeighLa. One of my girlfriends.

Maybe it was only a little dog party, but any dog party is better than no dog party.

I got to dance with LeighLa.

Bongo and LeighLa Dancing

And we danced.

LeighLa and Bongo dancing

And we danced some more.

Bongo and LeighLa dancing

I think I wore her out because she couldn’t keep up with me on our way back down the trails.

I’ll catch up with her next time. I see some more dogs to party with. Woo woo!
