Off Without Me

planes flying overYesterday I warned you that it would take me two posts to report all the mischief my people were up to this weekend.

So here’s the second post. Notice that it doesn’t start with a picture of me.

First my people went up to the airport and didn’t take me. And I understand dogs are allowed at the airport.

My person took that camera though.

And then, to make it worse they came back home and they left again.

And they still didn’t take me.

When my person got her new hiking boots I was thinking I could drag walk with her up some steep rocky areas.

Well, my younger person stole my idea.

He took my person up some steep, rocky areas.

Looking out at Fay Canyon

My person and that camera.

Not only did they go up one steep, rocky area.

When they climbed down that they went further down the trail and found another place to climb.

Courthouse Rock and Bell Rock from Fay Canyon

This is totally not fair.

I mean, this was my idea to help my person test out her new hiking boots.

I might have to hide in the trunk next time to make sure I get to come along.

Bongo in the trunk of a car

Oh, wait.

You did what, person?

You didn’t just climb rocks – you took pictures of flowers too?

Red flower

Never mind then. If you’re going to stop for flowers I think I’ll just stay home.

What’s in my Wash?

Bongo next to a dry washWhenever we go out on my trails my person has her camera aimed and ready and she’s always looking for unusual things to take pictures of.

I wish she’d just enjoy the walk – I mean, nobody cares if there are pictures on my blog.

Unless they are pictures of me, of course.

But my person can take pictures of me when we’re at home. She doesn’t need to take her camera on my trails.

But this time my person really found something unusual to take a picture of.

It’s so unusual that I might have to run back home and get my Detective Dog hat to investigate what it might be.

This thing showed up at a spot where flowers often grow in the dry wash on my trails.

Oh yeah, for those of you who were wondering about the dry wash I couldn’t find recently – it showed up again. Funny how those things happen.

At first I thought this strange thing was another flower growing where the other flowers had been.

Morning glory beginning to open

But then when I looked at it closer I realized it wasn’t a flower at all.

I think it’s some kind of toy.

flower shaped like a pinwheel

It’s a pinwheel!

Walking Without Me

Cholla fruitI have a real complaint.

My person got a new camera.

And now she leaves me home alone once a week.

She says she has to learn how to use her new camera – so she’s taking a class.

Please don’t tell her that I go on walks with my neighbor dog Toby while she’s gone.

But that’s not really what my complaint is.

Now that my person is taking a class she says she has to do her homework.

I always thought homework was called that because you do it at home.

I think my person’s confused because she thinks she has to do her homework out on my trails.

And she doesn’t take me.

Person, I promise I won’t mess up your pictures.

I might yank on my leash a little, but the thing you’re taking a picture of is still there.

Just try again.

Oh, come on. It’s been a very long time since I’ve pulled you over because I wanted to get at a coyote.

I won’t wreck your camera.

But no – I can’t convince my person.

So now she takes two walks on my trails.

One with me.

Thunder Mountain with mist

And one to do her homework.

Coffeepot Rock

But here’s what’s really bad.

While my person was out on one of her homework walks…

Sugarloaf and dark clouds

she saw my girlfriend Layla.

And she left me at home.

Not Time for Flowers

Bongo sniffing a bush with yellow flowersI just can’t win sometimes.

In the spring we get lots of flowers here and I’m constantly having to hang around while my person gets her camera out and takes pictures of them. And it seems like she takes forever.

Then in the fall when the weather cools down we get a few more flowers.

But in the middle of the summer I’m usually pretty safe. Not many flowers grow when it’s so hot.

But I just found flowers on this little bush here.

Maybe if I water it or something my person will want to leave.

yellow flower

Oops. Too late.

I’ve got to move faster next time.

Bongo sniffing a white morning glory

Oh no!

There were a bunch of these white things in this spot a couple years ago, but I thought I’d gotten rid of them because I didn’t see any last year.

Come on, person. Move along! There’s nothing of interest here.

***

Whew! She went for it.

catclaw blossoms

Hey! What are these doing here? I thought the catclaw were done blooming. What is it with this late bloomer?

***

Finally, we made it back home. I don’t have to wait any longer while my person takes pictures.

What!? Wait a minute! What are you doing, person?

You don’t need to do that.

orange trumpet vine

I’m not even safe in my own backyard.

Popular Puddle

Bongo tied to a treeThere’s really been a flurry of activity around my puddle lately.

First the tadpoles, then the toadies, then those mysterious tracks that I told you about yesterday. You know, the evidence of those strange creatures that took off with my puddle.

So today when we got to my puddle it had come back. Well, at least part of it was back.

I was so excited!

And you know what my person did? She tied me up again.

What now? The tadpoles are gone, and most of the toadies have hopped away.

Yeah, I know there’s still a few toadies around. I won’t step on them. I promise.

But today there was someone else near my puddle.

Butterflies!

Butterflies in the mud near a puddle

And not just any butterflies. We had come across the Arizona state butterfly – the Two-tailed Swallowtail.

And those butterflies seemed to be getting pretty cozy.

Mating butterflies

Something strange was happening.

I wanted to go home and get my Nature Dog hat so I could investigate – but being tied up put a cramp in my style.

My person says these butterflies are supposed to lay single eggs on plants, but one of these butterflies seemed to be laying bunches of eggs in a mud hole.

I guess the other butterfly thought it strange too.

Two butterflies

He started dancing around. Maybe he was nervous.

But I think that butterfly beat around the bush – I mean around my puddle – a little too long.

Three butterflies

Because the competition showed up.

And now that my puddle has a butterfly party going on in it, I’m just wondering one thing.

Am I ever going to get to play in my puddle again?

Acorns and Insects

Bongo next to scrub oaksYou want me to put on my Nature Dog hat again? Already?

I think I’ll just stand by this bush instead.

This looks natury enough for a nature talk. Okay, here goes.

We don’t have oak trees on my trails, but we do have acorns.

They grow on these bushes called Scrub Oaks.

.

Acorns

I took my person for a walk in the wash today and the scrub oaks along the wash have more acorns on them than other scrub oaks on my trails. I guess because they get more water.

My person thinks those acorns are pretty. I kind of wish she didn’t because she keeps stopping to take pictures of them.

But acorns aren’t the only things these scrub oaks have.

Somebody must think they needed more decoration so they hung some ornaments on the leaves.

Peach colored round gall

These things hanging on the leaves are called galls.

Splotchy round gall

I think it’s kind of an ugly name for something so pretty.

white with red stripes round gall

I don’t know what the official name of this one is, but I’m calling it a peppermint gall.

These galls are made by insects that either hang out on the plant or lay their eggs there and cause the plant to grow over them. Then those insects hang out in their nice, cozy home until they’re ready to poke their little heads out and see what’s out there. They bore little holes in the galls to get out.

This next gall probably explains why they’ve got that name. There are more of these than any other kind on the scrub oaks on my trails.

grayish brown odd shaped galls

I call these galls Ugly Galls.

I sure hope I never see one of the bugs that lives in there.

I’m a Starbucks Dog

Bongo drinking Starbucks waterI really do not like thunder. It’s one of the most horrible things there is.

But I’m thinking now that maybe there’s a good side to thunder.

Thunder has some benefits of its own.

Yesterday I got to go to church – twice – because my person didn’t want to leave me home alone while it thundered.

But today was even better.

For the first time ever, I got to go to Starbucks.

Well, I didn’t get to go in Starbucks, but they have tables outside my Starbucks – and dogs are allowed to sit there.

They even have a special Starbucks drink for dogs outside their front door.

And not only did I get to go to Starbucks, but so did my friend Pablo.

Bongo sniffing Pablo

I hadn’t seen Pablo for months and months so I had to check him out and make sure it was really him.

Pablo and I met lots of new people while we were there and we got lots of loves.

Bongo getting loves from kids

Even kid loves. The best kind.

We saw some strange animals too.

Colorful horse and turtle sculpture

I’ve never seen animals like this on my trails.

They seemed friendly though. I wanted to play with them, but I couldn’t get them to take notice of me.

So I decided to check out the view from our table.

Bongo looking through a fence

I couldn’t see much. There were a lot of bushes in the way.

My person said she had a better view though.

I guess being taller than a dog has its advantages.

Sedona Red Rocks

My person says there’s a rock in this picture named after a famous dog.

Hey, I’m famous. Is there a rock named after me?

What? It’s not me? It’s a dog named Snoopy?

Snoopy Rock

I kept waiting for Snoopy to get up and bark so I could spot him, but my person says all he does is lay on his back.

He’s laying there on top of the rocks to the right of the tallest rocks in the picture.

I guess I need to work on getting as famous as Snoopy.

That way I can sleep all day too.

Walking’s not an Option

Bongo looking at the viewLately I’ve been wanting to go on a different trail – it’s a little longer than the way we usually go on my trails.

But my person always says she’s too busy, or it’s too hot, or she comes up with any number of excuses.

Today it was cloudy and cooler, and my person didn’t have bunches of stuff to do, so we got to go on that trail.

We were having a great time – until I heard it.

Thunder!

Over there – and that way too!

We were surrounded!

Person, why did you want to go on this trail? We could have been almost home by now.

There was only one direction to go – and my person wouldn’t let me go that way.

Okay, fine. Then we’re not going at all.

Bongo holding his ground

Bongo refusing to move

It became a game of tug of war.

Until my collar came off.

Then my person did something really strange.

She walked to the end of my her leash, sat on the ground, and started taking pictures of me.

Bongo reluctantly walking

I like the sound her camera makes. Eventually I walked to where she sat.

Bongo Profile

Then she moved back to the end of her leash, and made me walk to her again.

Bongo looking at red rocks

Bongo walking toward the camera

Then she did it all over again.

Bongo walking, Thunder Mountain behind him

My person thinks I’m afraid of this thunder, but I’ve been thinking. Sometimes I complain too much when she stops all the time to take pictures. I think I’ll be nice to her today and let her take all the pictures she wants.

And just to prove I was doing it to be nice to her, when we got past the part with all the best scenery, I started walking with her again.

Bored

Pink prickly pear cactus flowerI’m getting really bored at the dog hotel. All I can find to post is this prickly pear picture.

The prickly pear didn’t have many flowers this year, so I really had to look hard to find one.

I sure hope my person comes and gets me out of here soon.

I need to have more adventures.

The Hottest Day

Bongo on the trailToday was the hottest day of the year, so what did my person want to do?

She wanted to go outside and experiment with her new camera.

I don’t know why she couldn’t have waited until maybe October. When the weather’s nice.

So we had to spend extra time out in the heat today while my person fiddled with her camera and figured out how to change the settings.

And she still has her old camera. She could have taken that instead.

It’s really stupid why my person has a new camera.

She was taking me for a walk on my trails and taking pictures (she’s always doing that) and my younger person called so she was trying to take pictures and talk on the phone and she dropped her camera.

I was really excited when my person said her camera wouldn’t work – but what did she do? She ordered another one right away. She said she felt naked without her camera and this new one did more.

Well my younger person got her camera working again so now my person has two cameras. And she had to experiment with the new camera on the hottest day of the year.

Here I am panting away and my person’s taking pictures of…

Juniper Berries

Juniper berries, and…

Sedona Red Rocks

red rocks, and…

flowers gone to seed

dead flowers.

But I’ve decided I really don’t like this camera after she took this picture of me.

Fish bowl picture of Bongo

I hope that camera has a setting for suave and debonair.
