Too Many Piles

Bongo next to a pile of rocks in a washI don’t believe it!

Someone ran out of room in their rock pile spot and now they’re even building rock piles in my wash.

This is a silly place to build rock piles.

Don’t they know this is a wash?

As soon as we get a good rain the water will come roaring down here and take that rock pile away.

Oh, wait.

When was the last time we had rain here?

That rock pile might be safe after all.

So anyway, since that rock pile in the wash might wash away I’m going to leave it alone.

And invade the rock pile spot instead.

Bongo among many piles of rocks

Every time I walk by here there are more piles of rocks.

They’re running out of room to even put more piles.

So I think I’ll do them a little favor.

So they have a chance to do some more piling…

Bongo knocked over a few rocks

I think I’ll knock a few of these rocks to the ground.

“S” Stands for…

An S shape in rockCheck this out.

There’s an S on my trails.

That must be for me.

I know my name starts with a B.

Oh, wait.

If that S is there then that means somebody knows my secret identity.

My trails must know it for sure.

I didn’t think my trails knew that about me.

I guess there’s no keeping it quiet anymore.

I’m mild mannered Bongo by day…

.

Super Dog

Super Dog by night!

It’s Super Dog to the rescue!

***

Oh oh.

I think I messed up.

I was tricked into giving away my secret.

That S wasn’t for me at all.

Because look at this.

A century plant just starting out

It’s the new beginnings of the first Sentury plant this year.

That S must be there to announce the birth of this plant.

***

It is too there for this plant.

What do you mean, it’s a See?

See starts with S.

So what’s the deal?

It’s a Century Plant with a C?

Then somebody’s all confused.

Because they wrote the wrong letter in that rock.

***

Maybe Super Dog should go C about this.

There might be a Kat involved.

Hurry on By

Indian PaintbrushI was so hoping that after the first day of spring no more flowers would show up.

But I was wrong.

Bunches of new flowers were on my trails today.

And of course my person had to stop and take pictures of all of them.

Like this Indian paintbrush.

This is the worst kind of flower, because it stands out wherever it is.

.

You can’t miss it, so I’ve got no chance of walking by quickly and hoping my person doesn’t see it.

But I discovered something today.

Something good.

Whenever my person stops to take flower pictures…

Bongo eating weeds near the indian paintbrush

I can usually find some tasty weeds nearby.

And if my person doesn’t want me eating weeds she’s got to stop taking pictures.

Pretty good plan, don’t you think?

Take this white flower for example.

White flower

I had to search a little harder for the weeds.

Bongo eating weeds under the bush of white flowers

But I found them.

***

Wait a minute.

Bongo and something white in the bushes

I don’t see any weeds around this strange flower.

What is this flower anyway?

I’ve never seen anything like it on my trails.

My person will want to take pictures of this for sure.

I’d better hurry her along.

Golf ball in the bushes

Maybe she won’t notice it.

Happy Spring!

Yellow flowersSome flowers popped out on my trails today.

I tried to walk by them really fast and hope my person wouldn’t notice – but she did.

And of course she had to stop and take pictures.

She looks for any excuse to get out her camera.

So while I hung around waiting for my person to finish taking pictures I realized something.

Today is the first day of spring.

So these flowers came out to celebrate.

And tomorrow won’t be a special day anymore.

So maybe the rest of the flowers on my trails will realize they missed their chance and they won’t show up this year.

I mean, what’s a flower if it misses the first day of spring?

And if I keep my person occupied enough with walking, she won’t stop and take pictures of anything else either.

Come on, person. We’ve got places to go – trails to explore.

A trail is no place for a camera, and tomorrow I’m sure there won’t be any flowers showing up.

So happy first day of Spring!

The only day with flowers to take pictures of.

***

What, person?

What do you mean, these are the first of bunches of flowers on my trails?

You’re going to make me wait while you take pictures of them all spring and summer?

That’s terrible!

What am I going to do?

Bongo profile on the trail

I think I’m going to have to find some new trails for awhile.

Berries too Early

Bongo checking out a manzanita bush with berriesWhat’s this?

These aren’t supposed to be here yet.

What are berries doing while it’s still winter?

All the other Manzanita bushes still look like this.

.

.

.

.

Bongo next to a manzanita bush full of blossoms

What? You can’t tell the difference?

Well then, check this out.

Manzanita blossoms

Blossoms.

All the other bushes are still covered in blossoms.

So where did all these berries come from?

I’d better do something to hide these berries from my person.

Bongo in front of the bush with berries

If she sees them she’ll have her camera out in no time.

And she’s going to have plenty of time to take pictures of berries without starting now.

Hey person, look over there.

Don’t look this way.

There’s nothing interesting here.

Person, what is your camera doing out?

What could you possibly find here to take pictures of?

Manzanita Berries

This is going to be a long picture taking season.

***

Bongo Fact: Manzanita means Little Apple

Can you tell why these bushes are named Manzanita?

Cousins

Bongo leading a cousin to the trailI have what?

Cousins?

I don’t have any cousins.

Well, at least none that you know about.

You don’t even know who my real parents are.

What? Wait. What?

What do you mean, they’re not my cousins?

.

Then who’s cousins are they?

Your cousins?

You have cousins?

Oh. They’re coming to visit us?

They’re coming to visit us!

I’d better get busy.

I’ve got to get a training plan together.

I’ve got to train them right while they’re here.

How much time have I got?

They’re here?

Hey cousins. Here’s my leash.

Hold onto it and I’ll show you where my trails are.

Cousins on the trail without Bongo

These cousins are not doing a good job.

If they don’t hold onto my leash they’re going to get lost.

I’m sure of it.

Bongo and cousin

That’s much better.

At least I can keep one cousin from getting lost.

Bongo with cousin

Now, let’s see what kind of adventures we can run into.

Prints

Bongo and prints in the mucWhen the ground gets wet and squishy they show up.

Prints.

Pawprints, footprints, and hoofprints.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Javelina prints

I’ve been trying to figure out what those hoof looking prints are.

I’ve never seen anyone on my trails that matches up to those.

My person says that’s because they usually come out at night.

She says she’s seen them during the day, but never on my trails.

I guess those trail creatures are night creatures for sure.

My person says they’re usually up to no good.

They eat the prickly pear cactus.

Prickly Pear Bitten by Javelina

And they dig up people’s gardens.

Sometimes on trash day they knock over all the garbage cans and go through the garbage looking for goodies.

I don’t know why they go through my garbage.

I already ate all the good stuff.

But today I was heading out on my trails – and there it was.

Standing right next to my trail looking at us.

I tried to give it what for, but my person wouldn’t let go of my leash.

I guess she was scared of it.

I did manage one thing though.

You know how my person is always taking pictures of everything she sees?

I chased that creature right back into the bushes before she could get her camera out and aim it.

Because I didn’t want that creature taking over my blog.

***

What, person?

You have a picture?

An old one from before I was around?

Okay, since it’s old.

Javelina web

This is a javelina that visited my yard once, a long time ago.

Zeitgeist

RV that says Zeitgeist on the backI found the strangest word on my trails.

I can’t even read and I still think it’s a strange word.

And I sure don’t know what it means.

But it might be a violent word because it seems to be related to killing TVs.

Anyway, I decided to make my person look the word up.

And I still don’t know what it means.

Because there doesn’t seem to be a translation into English – or even into dog language.

I thought everything could be translated into dog language. Woof!

.

But my person found out that word is a movie – and there are conspiracy theories in that movie.

I don’t know what conspiracy theories are – but I think they’re related to everybody being turned into rock piles on my trails.

Rock piles next to the trail

That word seems to get around because my person found out it’s also a movement. Apparently a bunch of people think they can fix the world.

People are never going to fix the world unless they listen to us dogs.

But here’s the definition of this strange word. Zeitgeist: the general beliefs, ideas, and spirit of a time and place.

So I guess the zeitgeist of my trails is that it’s a great place for dogs to take their people for walks.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing on SugarloafPeople have been doing strange things on my trails lately.

Awhile back someone rappelled down the side of my rock called Sugarloaf.

Today someone else is climbing right up it.

You’d think they’d want to coordinate with each other.

I mean, which is it – up or down?

No one seems to be able to make up their minds.

.

Personally, I think the trail on the back of Sugarloaf is much easier, but I guess these people didn’t want to walk that far.

I guess this way is a lot shorter.

And look, she’s almost at the top.

Person almost to the top of Sugarloar

But as soon as the first person made it up, her friend decided she’d give it a try.

Two climbers on Sugarloaf

I know you have to look kind of hard, but there’s a pink shirt in the middle of the picture.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking…

There must be something to this climbing thing.

It looks like fun.

Maybe I should try it.

But I think I should start out on something a little easier.

Bongo climbing onto a rock

How’s this?

I’m almost to the top.

Missing Baby

Bongo sniffing a stroller on the side of the trailHmmm.

What’s this parked on the side of my trail?

Isn’t this one of those things that babies ride around in?

But something’s missing.

There’s no baby in here.

This is bad. This is really bad.

Who knows what could happen to a baby crawling around by itself on my trails.

.

All kinds of things could happen to it.

A coyote could get that baby. Or a javelina.

Even those ravens that circle around here are pretty big.

Or that baby could get stuck by pricklers from a cactus.

And how is a baby going to find its way home?

I bet it’s lost out there.

Maybe I can get some clues about that baby from this stroller thing.

Bongo sniffing the stroller's wheel

Nope. I don’t smell any babies on this wheel.

One of my friends left me a message though.

Bongo in front of the stroller

Come on person. We’ve gotta go look for that baby before something happens.

Let’s go!

Bongo looking away from the stroller

I think the baby went that a way.
