Looking for the Teacup

Teacup Trail SignThere’s a new sign on one of my trails. There was a sign there before, but now  a new and improved sign has appeared.

I think somebody must have seen the sign I put up in my puddle a couple days ago and got jealous. That’s the only thing I can figure.

I wasn’t trying to compete with anyone. I don’t plan to start any sign wars by putting a better sign up in my puddle. But I do have to admit, this new trail sign is rather nice.

I’m kind of befuddled though. I’ve been walking on my trails a long time and I’m still looking for the teacup.

I know where the coffee pot is.

But I haven’t been able to find the teacup.

Maybe I’m looking in all the wrong places. Maybe that teacup isn’t big and red like the coffee pot.

What if this is the way to the tea party and I have to bring my own tea cup?

What if that butterfly I chased out of my puddle with my sign was the first guest at the tea party? And I ruined the party.

That’s terrible. I’m going to be known on my trails as a party pooper.

That does it! I’m heading out there right now and taking my sign down.

Little Person

Bongo and the Little PersonI had just finished my walk on my trails and was ready to head into the house for dinner and a nice long nap, when there he was. Right in front of my driveway.

I couldn’t avoid him, and I really wasn’t sure what to make of him. He’s awfully little.

He’s looking at me. What do I do?

I think he wants to touch me now. Maybe if I look the other way he’ll go away.

Oh look, I think I see somebody way over there that I might need to go and give some loves to.

What? What did you say person?

Okay, I’ll be nice and let him touch my head.

Little Person touching Bongo's head

Was that good enough?

Hey, wait a minute. That touch felt good.

You might be a little person, but you’re already learning how to give good loves.

And you’re just the right height.

Puddle Invasion

Butterfly near a puddleMy puddle, that disappears to who knows where sometimes, has been hanging around lately. But now I have another problem.

Other creatures have been coming and thinking it’s their puddle.

I see lots of footprints and I know someone’s been around when I’m not there to stop it. And they think they can get away with it!

Sometimes birds try to use my puddle for a bathtub. That’s pretty nervy of them. They need to find their own bathtub.

But today, I caught a butterfly trying to take over my puddle. Just hanging out there, as if that puddle belonged to him.

Butterfly

What am I going to do? Before I know it there will be lots of butterflies – and birds- and sneaky night creatures.

If I’m not careful that puddle will get tired of everybody hanging around and it will disappear again.

This is not good. I’ve got to think of something.

Oh, I know what I’ll do.

Doubly Insulted!

BongoTalk about a double insult! My person and I were heading home from my trails when we came across a lady and her dog at the trailhead. The lady pulled her dog to the side and my person made me walk on the other side. That was okay. That other dog and I were both acting polite.

But then she did it. That lady asked my person if I was an old girl. How could she even think that?

Girl??? I always thought I was a pretty manly dog. I mean, I’ve got two girlfriends (I think) and I lift my leg at every bush. Now I’m concerned about my manliness. How could somebody think I’m a girly dog?

And she called me old too! Those aren’t gray hairs lady. My snout was this color when I was born.

What, person? Some people think nine-year-old dogs are getting old?

Not me! I’m still a pup full of energy. I can run these trails and catch Frisbees with the best of them.

I’d like to challenge that lady to a contest. I bet I could outrun her and catch more Frisbees than she can. And when we’re finished with the contest I’m going to have a little talk with her.

Those aren’t gray hairs.

Thunder Mischief

Bongo looking toward the thunderI cannot believe the mischief my person was up to this weekend. On Sunday afternoon we had one of those nasty thunderstorms. It kept getting louder and louder and then finally – craackk!!! – the lightning and the thunder came at the same time – right over the house. It was the loudest thunder in history!

My person took me outside after that and I was glad to get out of the house where that loud noise hit.

I took care of business and got some loves from my neighbor, and then you know what my person did?

She drug me back into the house. That’s where the loud noise came from. I don’t want to go back in there.

And then a little while later my person did it again. She took me outside for a walk and now the thunder was rumbling on my trails.

Thunder Clouds over Sedona

I wish my person would let me stay where the thunder isn’t.

It wasn’t too bad at first because we were going away from the thunder. But then my person started getting really mischievous. She wanted to head back. I didn’t like that direction at all. Come on person, let’s keep going this direction.

Bongo Heading Away from the Thunder

Finally we made it back home. The thunder’s outside now so I’m heading in. But what I really wish is that my person would stop her mischief and figure out how to turn the thunder off.

I guess until she does I’ll bury myself under this blanket.

Off to Egypt

Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh (painting by Be...

Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh (painting by Benjamin West) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Hey person, I’ve had to wait a whole week to find out if Moses left his sheep and his sheep dogs and went to Egypt. So are you going to tell me? I’m still waiting.

He did go? I thought so. God was pretty insistent. But what about the sheep?

The Bible doesn’t say anything about the sheep? Why not? Okay I’ll listen to the story.

Moses took his wife and sons and put them on a donkey and headed back to Egypt. At least they took a donkey with them.

Yes, I’m listening person.

The Lord told Moses’ brother Aaron to go into the desert to meet Moses, so that Aaron could help Moses when he went to face Pharoah.

When Moses and Aaron got to Egypt they met with the elders of the Israelites who were very happy to hear that the Lord was concerned about them.

Then Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh.

Did they give him what for?

I am listening.

They told Pharaoh that the Lord, the God of Israel says, “Let my people go, that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.”

Did Pharaoh let them go?

He what!?

Not only did Pharaoh say no, he made things harder on the Israelites. He told his slave drivers and foremen to stop giving the Israelites straw for making bricks, but to require them to make the same number of bricks as before.

So now the Israelites had to find their own straw and still make the same number of bricks. And they weren’t very happy with Moses and Aaron.

Moses went to God and he wasn’t very happy with God. It seemed to him that God had sent him to cause more trouble for the Israelites and God hadn’t rescued them at all.

So is God going to help Moses give Pharaoh what for, or not?

What do you mean, I’ve got to wait another week? How long is this story anyway? Do you think maybe you could get God to move a little faster?

Where’s My Trail?

Bongo at a blocked trailHey, what is this? This used to be my trail. Yesterday it was my trail. It’s always been my trail. It still smells like my trail. But now it’s got branches in the way, and freshly planted prickly pear cactus, and some square thing sticking out of the ground.

I guess I’ll have to go on my other trail. It’s a good trail too, but I like having options.

Oh, now I know why the first trail is blocked.

Somebody wanted me to go on the other trail because the dogs are out in the yard near the trail. And they like to bark at me. I think I’ll ignore them. That makes them bark even more.

But I’m still confused. How am I going to go on a trail when there’s cactus growing in the middle of it? It wasn’t there yesterday. Maybe it will be gone again tomorrow. My person says there’s been a trail there forever and it even has trail signs on it.

I guess someone needed to plant some cactus and wasn’t sure where to put it.

Dive-bombing Hummingbirds

HummingbirdsSometimes it’s dangerous on my trails. Today I saw something really strange.

Dive-bombing hummingbirds.

They would fly up really high – and then they would dive bomb. Flying down almost to the ground at top speed.

I got very concerned. What if they tried to dive-bomb my head.

Yikes! That could hurt!

I’m pretty brave. I can face big dogs and clawing, hissing cats. I can outrun a thunderstorm (Okay, maybe I’m not that brave.) and chase wild coyotes. But those little tiny hummingbirds could really hurt.

And I would have no defense.

I think I’m going home now. And I’m not coming back until I have on a hummingbird hat.

I don’t care what that hat looks like – as long as it protects my head from a dive-bomb attack.

They’re Here!

Scratchy and Bag in PackageThis is Scratchy here. While Bongo is in the hallway trying to hide from all the thunder we’re having today I thought I’d sneak onto the computer and steal his blog. Actually our person said I could. She even told me to.

That’s because I have some news. Awhile back Bongo’s friends Geraldine and Mr. Cheddar had a contest at their blog My Real Life Reviews. Bongo wanted to enter it but the contest was only for cats and their people, so Bongo entered me. And guess what. I won!

I got three different prizes and the last one just showed up so I thought I’d share them with you – well, at least the pictures of them.

The first one was a bag with cats all over it. My person said she had a use for it so I thought I’d be generous and give it to her. Actually, I couldn’t figure out what I was going to do with that bag anyway.

Then a package came with a book in it. The book is called Crafting with Cat Hair. I was afraid Bongo would to steal all my hair and try to do something with it so I guarded that package carefully.

Scratchy on top of package

But the best package just showed up. It’s full of cat treats and a little catnip. It even came with a letter from Mr. Cheddar and now he’s my friend too.

Scratchy rubbing his head on his bag of treats

My person put the treats back in the box, but even the box is good.

Scratchy rubbing on the box full of treats

What, person? I didn’t understand you. I’m in this treat euphoria here.

What!? What do you mean I have to get Bongo something? Just because he entered me in the contest and I won?

Okay, fine. Here you go Bongo. I think some deer lost his antler so you can have it.

What Does a Mantis Pray?

Praying MantisWhen my person and I came back from our walk we found a mantis over our front door praying for us. I don’t know what a mantis is, but apparently they like to pray a lot. At least this one does because my person says it is a praying mantis.

It’s pretty cool having an insect that’s willing to hang out on top of our front door and pray. I guess that means everyone that walks through the door is blessed.

But what do insects pray for? Is it praying for me and my people, or is it praying for something for itself?

Maybe it’s praying for a little bug to fly into its waiting arms and become its next meal.

Or maybe its praying that no one will spray bug repellant around the door.

It might even be praying that it learns how to make a vase like those ants did the other day and someone will put flowers in it.

Whatever that mantis is praying for I hope it will put in one little prayer for me.

Please, oh please pray that I don’t have to sit in my “Oh no, there’s thunder” pose again.
