Found Out

Bongo and TobyHey Toby, hide me. Here she comes.

It’s my person!

Oh, hi person. Fancy meeting you out here on my trails.

You weren’t supposed to know that I go for walks with Toby when you’re gone – I mean, this is the first time I’ve ever gone for a walk with Toby when you weren’t here.

What a coincidence that you would come out on my trails at the very same time I was out with Toby.

What do you mean, you were looking for me?

There’s no way you could know I was gone because you weren’t home.

Well anyway, you found me. Does this mean I get another walk?

You haven’t had your walk yet today person. I’d better take you. You need your exercise.

It doesn’t matter if it gets dark. I don’t need to see to know where I’m going.

Person, you should start checking out all the messages around here like I do. Then you could find your way no matter how dark it gets.

Hey Toby, wait! Just because my person showed up doesn’t mean you have to leave.

Toby leaving Bongo

Toby, come back! Come back!

Now look what you’ve done person.

Next time you come looking for me could you try to not find me so fast?

Where’s My Adventure?

Dirt road, mountains, and skyMy person took off on an adventure this morning and left me at home with Scratchy.

This is really getting bad. I’m supposed to be the one having adventures, not my person.

And definitely not her camera.

.

.

.

Backlit clouds

It will be a bright day for sure when my person finally gets tired of that camera and takes me on adventures instead.

Red rocks and sky

Finally my person came back home and took me out on my trails.

Bongo in the wash

I looked all over my trails for some kind of adventure.

No luck.

No adventures anywhere.

I think my person used up all the adventures of the day.

This guy we found on my trails didn’t look like he was having any adventures either.

Plein Air artist

He was just standing there painting the cactus.

Maybe we can go find an adventure together.

Standing Guard

Bongo standing by the evidenceAlright where is it?

Where is that pesky thing?

I know it’s around somewhere.

It dropped its evidence right down here.

I’m going to get that thing.

This time I’m really going to get it.

.

.

.

Bongo standing guard

I’m going to wait right here until it comes back for this thing it dropped.

Then I’ll pounce.

And it won’t have a chance.

It’s usually up in a tree laughing at me.

Or running across a telephone wire.

No trees or wires to run to safety to out here.

That creature made its last mistake.

It could have eaten this thing right where it was.

But it brought it way out on my trails instead.

And now it won’t have a chance.

***

I’ve been waiting forever.

Nothing, nada, nobody is showing up.

I give up.

A peanut on the ground

I guess that pesky squirrel forgot all about the peanut it dropped.

Fall Assignment

Bongo and the only fall color on the trailsMy person has an assignment for her photography class. She’s supposed to take pictures of fall.

That’s really hard on my trails. Except when we get flowers most things look about the same around here all year long.

So I thought I would help my person out.

I remember seeing fall colors somewhere on my trails.

Now if I could just remember where they were.

Oh yeah, here they are.

We had this one little spot of color last year about this time. It’s back again.

You’re in luck, person. That ought to make a great picture for your assignment.

Small bush with fall colors

I bet you’ll get an A for sure. I looked really hard to find that fall color for you.

Isn’t it beautiful?

What did you say, person?

You did what?

Grove of yellow aspens

Hey, wait a minute! Those trees aren’t on my trails.

fall aspens, mountains, and a pond

We don’t have mountains like that on my trails either.

What did you do person?

tree of yellow leaves

You went somewhere without me, didn’t you.

You took your camera again and left me at home.

fall aspen leaves with hills in the background

If you get a bad grade on those pictures it’s not my fault.

You should have listened to me.

My trails have the best spot of fall color ever.

Besides, there’s no dog in your pictures.

Something’s Out There

Bongo looking toward somethingHey person, there’s something out there.

Can you hear it? Can you smell it?

I think it’s somebody that wants me to play.

What? What do you mean it would show itself if it wanted me to play?

Maybe it’s shy.

Maybe it’s scared of people, but likes to play with dogs.

Person, you’ve got to realize that maybe not everyone that likes me likes you too.

Come on. Let me go.

I’ve got to check this out.

Bongo pulling on his leash

Person, would you let go of my leash.

You’re not going to get lost.

I’ll come back for you when I’m done playing.

Now let go!

I don’t believe this. You’re going to make me leave that poor lonely creature behind and head home with you.

Bongo looking toward the woods

Hey person, my new friend followed me. My friend must really be lonely.

Maybe scared too. I’ve got to go check it out.

Bongo pulling on his leash

Person, let go of my leash now!

You’re not going to get lost. Our house is right over there.

I’ll be home as soon as I’m done playing. Maybe I’ll even bring my new friend home with me.

Don’t be scared. You’ll be fine.

Biker Block

Bongo looking down the trail at mountain bikersHmmm. What’s going on here? My trail seems to be blocked.

And just when I was getting ready to head home.

After a nice, long walk I was so looking forward to a nap.

And now my trail is blocked. How am I going to get home?

What’s going on there, anyway?

.

.

.

.

Mountain bikers on the trail

It looks like mountain bikers, which is strange.

Mountain bikers don’t stay in one place. They’re always moving.

Why are they hanging around blocking my trail?

Are they doing it to me on purpose?

Did they say to themselves, “Here comes Bongo. Let’s block the trail?”

Mountain bikers stopped on the trail

Now I think I see what they’re doing. They’re trying to get that guy behind the tree to take a picture of them.

That’s even worse. Blocking a trail just so someone can take your picture.

Who wants pictures of themselves anyway?

I only like pictures taken of me when I get paid in treats.

Bongo with a mischievous grin and bikers in the distance

I’ll give those guys a treat if they keep blocking the trail.

But it’s not going to be the kind of treat I get when my picture is taken.

The Hose

Bongo examining an old fire hoseHmm. What’s going on here?

This is really strange.

This piece of hose has been hanging out in the parking lot of my trails for a long time.

It’s always been straight as an arrow and flat on the ground.

So what’s going on today? Why is this hose askew?

Did it finally give up?

The last holdout, and it doesn’t want to hold out any more?

Calling it quits?

Bongo standing over an old fire hose

Look at this poor thing. All squiggly shaped now.

There used to be bunches of these hoses. They all hung out in straight lines and there was no question about it.

The cars knew where to park.

But one by one they slithered away and left this poor last hose to try to control the cars by itself.

And it couldn’t do it.

The cars park every which way now and this hose can’t do a thing about it.

But if this last hose leaves those cars will be parking out in the street.

There won’t be anything left to keep them in the parking lot.

That could be chaos. People coming back after a nice, long hike – and where’s their car?

Panicked people will be running down my street wondering where their cars wandered off to.

I think I’d better do some investigating.

Bongo looking away from the bent up fire hose

Maybe I can find where those missing hoses went off to – what hole they crawled into.

I’ll bring them back to help this last hose out, so it will stay.

Somehow I’ve got to convince this hose to stay because if I don’t, and those cars start wandering off, I don’t want any of them parking at my front door.

Outside the Trail

Bongo sniffing in the bushesMy person was dinking around with her camera again, so to pass the time I started sniffing.

And I found a real treat.

Just a little ways off the trail I found another trail.

Not a people trail, but a trail just the same.

And this trail had some really great smells on it.

Smells that I don’t usually find on my regular trails.

Which goes to show you that if you sniff outside the trail, you’re likely to come up with some great ideas – I mean some great smells.

I hope my person messes around with her camera for a long time. I want to get my fill of what’s here.

Oh no, she’s done already. That wasn’t long enough.

Hey person, come over this way. There’s a trail here too.

What do you mean, there’s not a trail? There is too.

See, it connects up over here to this other trail. The one that goes down into the wash.

Try it, you’ll like it.

My person is just no fun at times.

Bongo being pulled back to the trail

She made me leave my secret smell stash…

And plod down the regular trails.

Just wait till she finds an off trail treasure of her own someday.

I’m going to yank my leash so hard she flies.

The Slide

Bongo at the top of a natural slideMy trails have a well kept secret.

I’m really glad not too many people – or dogs – know about this, because my trails might get so crowded there wouldn’t be any room to move.

So here’s the secret. My trails are like a theme park – with rides and everything.

Well, at least one ride anyway.

You see, there’s a slide on my trails.

It slides right down into the wash.

When my younger person was a kind of little person he used to slide down this slide a lot with his friends. That was before I was around.

This is only the second time I’ve gotten to slide down it. The last time we were with my little friend who visits sometimes.

I don’t know why my person doesn’t take me down this slide every time. It’s right on the way home – if we go this way, that is.

So now that I’ve told you all about my slide, I guess I’d better go down it.

Bongo starting down the natural slideBongo heading down the gully of a steep hill

Your turn next.

Strange Rock Behavior

Bongo sniffing a pile of rocksThere are a lot of rocks on my trails.

Big rocks and little rocks. Rock mountains and boulders.

Mostly they just hang out where they are.

Well, sometimes a bunch of tiny rocks will gang up on my person and slip right out from under her foot.

There’s one trail that she won’t let me take her down at all when it’s dry because it’s full of little rocks that like to do that to her.

.

.

.

But today, I found a few rocks doing something different.

Bongo sniffing another pile of rocks

They decided to see how high they can get.

I found two piles of rocks right next to each other.

Come to think of it, I saw some of those piles on our hike the other day – on different trails.

And my person says she’s seen piles in other places too.

So why are these rocks doing this?

Are they trying to top the next rock by seeing who can climb the highest?

Are they trying to get all the rocks to join them so they can become part of a rock wall?

Maybe they’re playing a new game. You know, like pig pile on – only it’s rock pile on.

Just when I was about to give up trying to figure out what these rocks are up to, I came across another rock.

And this rock had really strange behavior.

Prickly pear cactus with a red rock sticking out of it

I mean, who would purposely stick themselves into a cactus.

Usually it’s the cactus that sticks itself into someone.

Oh wait, now I get it. That cactus is sticking.

It’s sticking out its tongue.
