Half a Walk

Profile of Bongo on the trailSometimes I just can’t figure people out. They just don’t make any sense.

I started taking my person for a walk and we had hardly gotten out on my trails when she said, “We have to go back.”

What gives? We never go on this short of a walk. If she’s in this much of a hurry she just lets me out in the back yard.

My person said something about frozen food she left in the trunk.

I don’t know what she’s worried about. That food will still be in the trunk when we get back from our walk.

And if it stops being frozen and she doesn’t want it any more, I’ll eat it.

That food’s not going to go to waste.

As long as it’s not frozen olives in the trunk, that is. I won’t eat those in any way, shape, or form.

But I’ll eat all the other not frozen food.

So don’t worry person. We can go on our walk, and I’ll take care of the food when we get back home.

Well, my person wouldn’t go for it and we had to go back.

She got all the food out of the trunk and put it away – and then she said since we’d already had part of a walk and she had to be somewhere soon, we could only go on half a walk.

You should have left that food up to me, person.

I was really getting frustrated with my person until we got back from our half a walk.

Not only had she gone to the frozen food store, she’d gotten me something special at the pet store.

Bongo chewing on something

She got me an antler.

Bongo chewing on an antler

I needed one of those.

Maybe we should go on half a walk more often.

And Then There Was One

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat onI’ve got a real mystery on my hands – or maybe two or three – so on with my Detective Dog hat it is.

I’ve got to get to work.

Here’s what happened.

.

.

.

A couple days ago I went out on my trails and I found seven little lights.

Seven electric tea lights on a post

I’ve never seen lights like these on my trails before.

I guess someone wanted to see in the dark – but why would they leave these lights here during the day?

So I started checking for clues.

Bongo sniffing around the post

No unusual smells here.

Maybe this way.

Bongo next to the post looking the other way

I came up with nothing so I decided to continue on down my trail.

And then I found another one.

Bongo sniffing an electric tea light on the ground

Just sitting on the ground.

This is getting really strange.

I continued on my walk, sniffing as I went, but I didn’t find any more of those lights.

But the next day when I went out on my trails…

Five flicker lights on a post

there were only five lights left.

And one still on the ground.

Now I’ve got a second mystery.

Not only did somebody leave these lights, but somebody is taking them away.

What’s a Detective Dog to do? Two mysteries at the same time.

I continued sniffing and then went back home – exhausted from brain drain over the two mysteries.

I went out again on my trails today, wearing my Detective Dog hat.

And mystery of all mysteries on my trails…

One flicker light on a post

I only found one light left.

I hope I get this mystery solved before all the lights go out.

The Swimming Hole

Bongo in a swimming holeI found it! I found it!

No, I didn’t find that. I’m still looking for the dry wash on my trails and it hasn’t shown up anywhere.

But I found a swimming hole. Where the dry wash used to be.

I’ve never found a swimming hole on my trails before.

And now I can do one of my favorite things to do.

.

.

Bongo splashing the water

Splashing the water into the air and catching it in my mouth.

Person, they can’t tell what I’m doing in a picture.

Why didn’t you take a video? I’ve always wanted to be in the movies.

But there’s one problem with this swimming hole.

Bongo in a swimming hole that's too small to swim in

I can’t swim in my swimming hole.

It’s not big enough.

I guess it’s not enough to ask for a swimming hole.

I have to say what size I want too.

It’s not my fault.

Swimming holes are for swimming in. Doesn’t that mean they’re supposed to be big enough to swim in?

Okay, next time I ask for a swimming hole I’ll ask for one I can actually swim in.

Bongo looking like he doesn't want to get out of the water

What do you mean, I have to get out now?

This might be a too small swimming hole, but it’s still my swimming hole.

I wanna stay.

Ode to a Mushroom

Bongo following a stream after a rainMushrooms don’t grow much on my trails.

They need the right combination of warmth and water, and that doesn’t happen very often.

So far I’ve found one big mushroom on my street and a few little ones on my trails.

Then finally, it showed up.

It really came.

One big trail mushroom. Only one.

That poor mushroom had a very short life so I thought I’d write something special for it.

I call it…

Ode to a Mushroom

Popping out of the ground like a puffy marshmallow

Puffy mushroom on a stem

Creating a cover like a china hat

Mushroom shaped like a china hat

Dropping over dead.

Upside down mushroom

Wasn’t that great?

Do you think I’ll be the next poet laureate?

P.S. I didn’t kill that mushroom. Really I didn’t.

Rain Changes

Bongo on the trail - cloud covered rocks in the distanceIt rained and rained today.

I thought I was going to have to take my person for a rain walk.

But finally things cleared up – or at least the rain stopped falling.

So off we went.

But something had happened on my trails.

The clouds had stolen some of my rocks.

.

.

.

.

Clouds over Thunder Mountain

Yikes! There goes another one.

I’d better go chase those clouds away before they steal all my rocks.

Cloud covered rocks

I had to give up on those clouds because I couldn’t convince my person to follow me – and she wouldn’t let go of my leash.

Sometimes it’s a real burden taking a person for a walk.

Some of my rocks had disappeared – but then I found some new things on my trails that hadn’t been there before.

Small purple flowers

These flowers weren’t here before.

Bongo looking at water in the wash

Neither was this swimming hole.

Yipee! I love swimming.

Hey, wait a minute. This hole’s not deep enough.

Maybe I can dig it deeper.

Bongo digging in a small pool of water

Maybe not.

Guess I’ll head back home.

Hey person, I think we might be lost.

Bongo in a wash containing a small stream of water

I’ve been looking all over the place and I can’t find the dry wash that we always walk through.

Rocks on Rocks

Bongo sniffing a cairn with extra rocks on topHmm. This is strange.

For a long time there have been trail markers on my trails so people know which way to go.

They’re mostly just a big pile of rocks, but the rocks have heavy wire around them so the pile keeps its shape and the rocks don’t get knocked all over the place.

People need this kind of thing. I think they’d find it much easier if they’d learn from us dogs.

Follow the smells.

But look what I found.

This pile of rocks has another pile of rocks on top of it.

What’s that supposed to mean?

Is it for people who don’t get it the first time and need to be told twice?

Or maybe it’s for really tall people who don’t see the regular trail marker because it’s so far below them.

Or it might just be a waste of good rocks.

And look at this.

Bongo looking at a rock on a cairn

Here’s another one.

I’ve figured it out now.

This isn’t a double trail marker to help people follow the trails.

The rocks on top mean something else.

Instead of sticking to the trails these rocks are telling people to go up.

Trail cairn with an extra rock on top

I think they’re for the birds.

Missed the Swimming Hole

Bongo looking down a dry washDo you see that? Do you see it?

Right where I’m looking.

This is my wash here.

Normally it looks like this with no water in it.

You see where the grass is laying down?

Right there is a little trail that connects to the rest of my trails.

But the grass there is usually standing up tall.

That grass doesn’t normally lay down on the job.

And you know what that means?

It means that water came flowing down my wash and got so deep that it buried all that grass.

My wash turned into a regular swimming hole.

And I missed it.

I missed my chance to go swimming in my own wash.

By the time I got out here there was no water at all.

What, person? What are you trying to tell me?

What? When that water was here it was pouring down rain and thundering?

But that’s terrible!

How dare that rain and thunder be here at the same time as my swimming hole.

I bet that’s what chased my swimming hole away.

I mean, isn’t that kind of like raining on my parade?

Street Mushroom

Bongo on the trailStrange things pop up here sometimes in the summer after it rains.

Can you see it?

Oh wait, I guess you’re just looking at me in the picture. I can’t blame you for that.

That strange thing is pretty little. It barely shows.

.

.

.

.

.

Bongo's feet near a little white, round mushroom

Is that better?

You see that little round thing next to my feet?

It’s a mushroom.

Here’s some more.

Two small, round, white mushrooms in the dirt

You’d never think mushrooms would grow in Arizona, but they do.

Little tiny ones grow on my trails when it’s warm and wet around here.

Our typical summer weather.

But this year I found something even more special.

Bongo on the street near a mushroom

This wasn’t on my trails at all.

I found it right by the street. Right near my house.

It’s way bigger than all those little mushrooms I found on my trails.

Well, except for a few I found last year – but only in one spot.

This has got to be a brand new species – one that nobody has ever found before.

So here it is.

Mushroom in grass

And since I found it I’m the one that gets to name it.

This is hard. What should I call it?

Oh I know.

I found it on my street so I’m going to call it Street Mushroom.

I bet there’s no other mushroom with a name like that.

Do Lizards Jump?

Lizard on a logDo lizards jump?

My person says they do – or at least this one lizard jumps.

She says she saw it jump twice.

I’ve never seen a lizard jump.

I’ve seen lots of lizards scurry away when I come near.

They usually keep going until they find a rock or a bush to hide under.

For some reason lizards don’t seem to like me.

I don’t know why. I’ve never bothered one.

But I’ve never seen a lizard jump.

Looking Away

Okay, I admit I was looking the other way when my person saw that lizard jump.

Or says she saw that lizard jump.

I think she’s making it up.

I don’t see any videos of a lizard jumping.

You’d think if she saw a lizard doing something so unusual she’d take a video of it.

It happened too fast?

Some excuse. You say it happened twice.

You should have been ready for it the second time.

I think we need some witnesses around here.

I’m inviting all my friends to come out on my trails with me.

Lizard on a tree

We’ll see if anyone spots a lizard that jumps.

Time to Move

Bongo looking at the viewI am so excited!

Just when I was losing confidence in all those builders, some of them are coming through.

You probably don’t know what I’m talking about, do you?

Or even what I’m looking at.

.

.

.

.

Maybe if I get a little closer you’ll be able to see what I’m looking at.

Bongo looking at a distant house and red rocks

No, not the rocks back there.

Look again.

I guess I’ve got to explain it to you.

Well a couple weeks ago I was exploring my trails and I found a house that somebody was building for me.

And then a couple days later I found another house being built for me.

There was just one thing wrong.

Neither house had a roof.

This is the rainy season here. I mean, what good is a house without a roof in the rain.

My girlfriends wouldn’t want to come to either of my houses if it meant they would end up wet.

But look! One of my new houses has a roof on it now.

I’d better gather up all my friends.

House under construction

My new house is waiting for me to move in.
