My Century is Best

Bongo and a century plantYesterday, when my person took her big camera and wouldn’t take me she said she was looking for smoke.

Well yeah, she found that smoke, but that wasn’t the only thing she was looking for.

She went scouting for century plants.

The place where she went to find smoke is also the area where we find lots of century plants this time of year.

But I think my person was being punished for not taking me along.

Because she hardly found any century plants there.

And the best one of all is the one right next to my trail.

The one we’ve been watching grow every day.

My person needs to learn that the best things show up when I’m there with her.

.

So just to prove it, I actually let her take some pictures of my century plant.

But these better be the last pictures she takes – of something that’s not me.

Lizard Without a Tail

Lizard without a tailLook at this.

This is the strangest lizard.

Or a poor excuse for a lizard.

It has no tail.

Well, it kind of has a stub where its tail should be.

But I think I know why.

We have lots of lizards on my trails but my person hardly ever gets pictures of them.

All we see of them is the tail end as they scurry away.

But this lizard is hanging out for pictures.

Which means, some time ago it must have hung out long enough for somebody to catch it by the tail.

And you know what lizards do when they’re caught by the tail?

They drop their tail.

And the would be lizard eater is left with just a wriggly tail in its mouth while the lizard scurries away.

But this lizard better watch it because now it has no more tail to drop.

At least until that little stub turns into a new tail.

.

Get along little lizard.

Lizard on the trail running off

It’s about time you left.

Hey, I just realized something.

That lizard took over my whole blog.

Bongo sitting and smiling

Please forget that you ever saw a lizard.

This blog is supposed to be about me.

And see, I even have a tail.

Mad Dog

Drawing of a mad dog's head I’m kind of bummed right now.

You see, there’s this dog that I’ve been seeing on my trails lately.

And our people won’t let us get together.

Well, today was different.

My person and I had just headed out the door to go to my trails.

We were about to cross the street to the trailhead parking lot when who should show up but that dog and his person.

My person made me wait where we were but they came right toward us.

Hey, they must live on my street.

Well, we got kind of close and then, you know what happened?

That dog started getting all mean and nasty toward me.

That dog started barking and growling and so I started doing some of the same.

Then that dog’s person made him leave.

I kind of wanted to follow that dog and find out where he lives, but I guess that’s not a very good idea.

I didn’t think it was possible for someone to not like me but ——I don’t think that dog likes me.

***

Bongo sitting and smiling

Hey person, when are you going to draw a picture of me?

Loudmouth

Bongo in front of the bush with berriesThere are a lot of quail living on my trails, but I don’t see them all that often.

Most of the time they’re hiding in the bushes.

If I didn’t smell them I wouldn’t even know they were there, except that they give themselves away.

When my person and I come anywhere near where they’re hiding they scurry off.

If they’d stayed where they were we’d never see them, but we usually get a glimpse of them before they’ve hidden themselves in some more bushes.

.

.

.

But this time of year there are some lonely male quails who hang out in plain sight and make lots of noise so everybody knows they’re there.

Quail on a fence with pink flowers nearby

This fence is near the beginning of my trails, before the houses end and the wild things begin.

I guess that quail thought it was a good place to look for a girlfriend.

Quail on fence

Posing will get you everywhere.

Believe me, I know.

I hope those girls come by and notice soon.

If that guy finds a girlfriend maybe things will quiet down on my trails.

Quail in a tree

Hey, wait a minute!

That quail decided I was right about my trails being too noisy…

So he moved into the tree in my front yard?

No Mr. Quail, that’s not what I meant.

Does anybody have any earplugs?

Treat on the Trail

Bongo and Layla meeting on the trailSomething great happened on my trails the other day.

I was walking along, minding my own business, on a part of my trails where hardly anybody else goes – when I saw her.

My girlfriend Layla.

I hadn’t seen Layla in a very long time.

Weeks, or maybe even months.

So I was really excited.

.

Some of my dog friends don’t like to play much, but Layla loves to play.

Bongo and Layla playing

We ran, and jumped, and had a great time.

Bongo jumping near Layla

But after awhile it was time to get serious.

Bongo and Layla with their heads near each other's

I’m not sure if I wore Layla out, or she didn’t like that serious part because she left me.

Layla walking away from Bongo

Layla, come back!

I guess I’ve blown it again.

The only ones that seem to stick around are the cats.

Confused Cactus

Bongo and prickly pear cactus in the sunThere is a lot of prickly pear cactus on my trails.

Most of the time if you stay away from the cactus, it will stay away from you.

That’s how we get along, that cactus and I.

All winter that cactus sits around and doesn’t do much of anything – except maybe get eaten by javelina.

But in the spring the prickly pear has blossoms.

They’re not quite here yet.

.

.

Prickly pear cactus with buds

And it will be bad when they do come out because my person will stop and take all kinds of pictures of them.

Pink flowers next to a prickly pear cactus

Hey wait a minute!

The prickly pear around here don’t have pink blossoms.

What’s going on?

If I were a pink flower I would not be growing there.

They must be stuck.

***

But back to the prickly pear.

In the fall they have fruit.

Big, red, juicy fruit.

Like pears with prickles.

But I found this one prickly pear that doesn’t seem to know what time of year it is.

Prickly pear cactus with one fruit

Or maybe this prickly pear is trying to be my friend.

No flower pictures.

This one cut right to the fruit.

Arrow

Bongo and an arrow made of pebblesWould you look at this?

Somebody put an arrow on my trails so everybody knows which way to go.

It’s a good thing too, because someone might go the wrong way through the parking lot and end up out on the street.

Then who knows what would happen.

Cars don’t go very fast on my street so they wouldn’t be bothered and they’d just keep wandering.

They might get lost.

They could end up all the way down by the highway.

And cars go fast there.

Yup. It’s a good thing somebody put this arrow here.

.

.

Bongo looking away from the arrow

Are you coming person?

It’s this way.

Missing the Photo Ops

Bongo profile on the trailWe heard a really bad flute player on my trails today.

She was hanging out with the rock piles.

But my person wouldn’t take a picture.

Something about embarrassing the flute player.

I don’t know why she would have been embarrassed by having her picture taken.

Now if my person had recorded her playing the flute she probably would have hid under all those rock piles.

It would have been really embarrassing.

So we walked on and we saw a snake.

And my person still wouldn’t take a picture.

Something about the snake hiding before she could get her camera out.

She could have just yanked it by the tail before it got away.

It didn’t have one of those rattler things on it that I’m not supposed to play with.

But that didn’t happen.

So what does my person take a picture of?

Penstemon

Flowers!

Do you believe it?

All those good photo opportunities and she takes pictures of flowers.

So I decided I was going to do something about those flowers so my person couldn’t take any more pictures of them.

Bongo with penstemon around him

Help!

Those flowers must be powered by aliens.

Just a Memory

Bongo's head looking over the washI’m taking the memory trail today before I forget.

You see, we haven’t had rain in a very long time.

I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like.

It’s been so long that the county I live in has already posted fire restrictions.

They never post fire restrictions this early in the year.

Maybe somebody should tell them it’s only April.

So anyway, before I forget what rain is like, I thought I’d look back at some pictures my person took from the last time it rained.

She doesn’t make me wait around as much when she takes rain pictures like she does when she’s taking flower pictures, so I like the rain pictures better.

Bongo looking at wet red rocks

The rocks on my trails change color when it rains.

Rain must have some magical dye in it or something that goes away the same time the rain does.

Bongo on rocks with water flowing down

Water flows down the rocks on my trails when there’s rain.

It’s fun to splash in.

Red rocks covered in clouds

Sometimes the rain has giant erasers and it starts erasing the big rocks on my trails.

The rocks always come back eventually, so they must be magic erasers.

Bongo in his puddle

My puddle!

Oh puddle, I almost forgot about you.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen you.

Where are you hiding?

I’m not sure why my puddle only shows up when it rains.

Well puddle, I guess it will be awhile longer till I see you again because…

Bongo on the trail with red rocks and blue sky in the background

I’m really enjoying all this great weather we’re having.

Guess I’ll forget about the rain.

Blooming Yucca

Bongo looking at a yucca plantFor some reason there seem to be a lot of yucca plants blooming on my trails this year.

Usually I’m lucky to see one of two of them.

But this year they’re blooming all over the place.

.

.

.

.

.

Look, here’s another one.

Yucca plant beginning to bloom

This one’s just starting out.

But here’s one that’s halfway there.

Yucca plant in partial bloom

And of course my person has to stop and take pictures of all of them.

I think I need to hide her camera.

Here she goes. Stopping again.

But sometimes there are advantages to having my person stop at all the blooming yucca plants.

Bongo sniffing below a yucca plant

Sometimes they come with good messages.

But then again, maybe it’s not so good having my person always taking pictures.

Does my butt look big in this picture?
