About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

Supervision Needed

Bongo watching with two vehicles backed up to each otherMy younger person came home to see me this weekend because Monday was a holiday so he had extra time. Well, he says he didn’t just come to see me – he had to get something that was still in the broken down vehicle that got towed back here.

When I went out for my walk my younger person was doing something that looked strange. He had his little car and his big car backed up to each other. I wanted to stay because I was sure he needed someone to supervise. I wasn’t sure he knew what he was doing – you can’t drive cars when they’re like that.

But my person tugged on my leash and made me go for a walk. I tried to convince her I needed to stay, but she wouldn’t listen.

Well, she listened to the next thing. A big, loud clap of thunder coming from the direction we were headed. Sorry person, we can’t go any further that way. Got to go back and supervise.

I made it back just in time to make sure my younger person didn’t get lost in the space warp he had created.

Somehow he managed to put a great big tool box into a tiny little Honda.

Younger person, don’t fall innnnnn!

Who Came Out

Sugarloaf in the sunAbout a year ago I did a post celebrating September 1st. That’s when thunder season is supposed to end – or so I thought. In reality we had bunches of thunderstorms during the month of September. I was not very happy.

So this September 1st I decided I’d better not celebrate. And it’s a good thing too because we had a big thunderstorm and bunches of rain. But the storm finally ended and my person said it was safe to go out.

I’m thinking my person announced that on a loudspeaker because I wasn’t the only one who came out.

The sun came out, but I didn’t really notice. There were too many interesting things on the trail.

Bongo missing the view of Sugarloaf

Some mushrooms came out.

Then a rainbow came out, but it seemed to be rainbowerly challenged. It wasn’t all there.

But the best thing of all was when I discovered that my puddle came out.

What do you mean, I can’t drink the water?

I’m not drinking it. I’m just giving my puddle a kiss.

Parting of the Ways

Foster Bible Pictures 0064-1 The Water Came on...

Foster Bible Pictures 0064-1 The Water Came on Pharaoh and His Soldiers (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In the last Bible story God finally gave Pharaoh what for so bad that he let the Israelites go. But my person says Pharaoh still hadn’t had enough and the Israelites would be seeing him again.

Oh yeah, the Israelites were going to throw all their dog treats at Pharaoh. Well, I hope they save a few dog treats for me.

I’ll listen, person. Can’t I have a little fun first?

When the Israelites finally got to leave Egypt, God led them to the desert with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire to give them light at night. God took them the long way around because he didn’t want them to get in a fight with the Philistines and get discouraged.

I should have gone along. I would have whooped those Philistines.

Yes, I’m listening.

God told the Israelites to camp by the sea so Pharaoh would think they were wandering in confusion because they were hemmed in by the desert. And then God hardened Pharaoh’s heart.

And Pharaoh changed his mind when he realized that by letting the Israelites go he’d lost their services. So he took all his chariots and the army and went after them.

I hope the Israelites have those dog treats ready to throw.

Okay, I’ll listen. I promise.

The Israelites were terrified when they saw the Egyptians. They complained to Moses that they would have been better off staying in Egypt than dying in the desert.

Moses told the people not to be afraid and to stand firm because God would deliver them. The angel of the Lord who had been traveling in front of Israel went behind them – between them and the Egyptians – and so did the pillar of cloud.

The Lord told Moses to raise his staff and stretch out his hand over the sea, and when he did that the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind. The Israelites went through the sea on dry ground with a wall of water on each side of them.

Woo woo! That means they get to keep their dog treats. And they won’t even get soggy.

I am too listening.

The Egyptians followed the Israelites through the sea…

Oops! I take that back about the dog treats.

But when the Israelites were across, the Lord told Moses to stretch out his hand again so the water would flow back over the Egyptians, their chariots, and their horsemen.

So the Israelites made it across, and the Egyptians went swimming but didn’t make it out alive.

And I got the dog treats.

Hey person, these dog treats aren’t very good. They taste like flat bread. Can you go to the pet store and get me some better ones?

Rain on the Roof

Small cloud raining on one spot on a houseI like water – a lot. Even when it’s raining on me. I don’t mind getting wet. In fact, it’s kind of cool.

But one thing I don’t like is the sound of rain pounding down on the roof when I’m inside the house. It’s a creepy, scary kind of sound – second only to thunder. And we get a lot of it this time of year.

Lately, we’ve had a new kind of rain on the roof. It sounds way different than the usual rain. It makes more of a pitter patter sound.

And this new rain doesn’t rain all over the roof at the same time. I hear it in one spot and then it moves along the roof going pitter patter, pitter patter. It’s not as scary as the usual rain. I actually don’t mind it much at all.

I’ve never seen this strange rain do what it does when I’m outside. You’d think with all my walks I’d catch that pitter pattery rain in action.

My person took her camera outside when it was happening and tried to take a picture of it. Except by the time she got outside it had stopped. She said the only thing she saw was a squirrel in a tree.

My New Pet

Bongo sniffing an upside down boxMy person and I have not been able to agree on a pet and I was beginning to think I would never get one. Except for my friend Dalton who said she’d come over and be my pet – but my person said it will take her a long time to get here because she lives so far away.

But today, my pet showed up. I don’t know if I picked him, or if he picked me. He came into the house on his own. I told him to be quiet and hide so my person wouldn’t notice him until he was settled in.

But he decided to come out and show himself. He stayed in one spot and kind of blended in to the carpet.

I watched as my person looked toward him. I’d hoped she’d think I left something on the floor and she’d ignore it. At first I thought she did.

But then I saw her do a double take. She looked closer at my pet. And then she walked away.

Well pet, I guess you’re okay here. Maybe it’s time to come up with a name for you.

My person came back with a box and put it over my pet.

Scratchy tried to get the box off. I think he wants a pet too. No Scratchy, I think our person is just keeping him in a box until she can find something better to put him in.

Hey, wait a minute! My person is taking that box outside. And my new pet is in it.

What do you mean I can’t have that pet in the house?

What do you mean he’s an outdoor pet?

Next time I get a new pet I think I’m going to have to put my person outside.

Blue’s not a Blessing

Blue SkyYou see that picture there? You know what that is? It’s the most beautiful blue sky I’ve ever seen. And you know why it’s so beautiful? Because I haven’t seen a sky like this since thunder season started. This sky has no clouds in it. And no clouds means no thunder.

But somehow this cloudless sky worked against me. Because my person saw this blue sky too, and she decided that since there was no thunder she didn’t have to stay home and protect me from it.

And she left.

And she didn’t take me with her.

She went somewhere with a swimming hole. I’ve never gotten to go swimming with the ducks before.

Ducks on the Creek

I’m not sure where my person went, but she was gone so long I think she went all the way to Mexico. I thought maybe if I looked at the pictures in her camera I could figure out where she did go – and now I have proof that she went to Mexico.

Gomez

When I quizzed my person about the pictures in her camera she said this dog is named Gomez.

And then I found a picture of my buddy Pablo. Pablo was born in Mexico. I haven’t seen him in a long time so he must have gone back there.

Pablo

My person says she didn’t get anywhere close to Mexico, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

Next time person, you’d better hide your camera.

Detective Dog at Work

Cylinder shaped ant hole entranceI saw this really strange thing on my trails. There are lots of strange things on them, but I think this is one of the strangest. I guess I’ll have to put on my Detective Dog hat and figure out what it is.

Maybe it was a rock, and when the rain came down it was carved into this shape. I’ve never seen rain do things like that before though.

Or maybe it’s a microphone for lizards. I never hear lizards say anything. Maybe their voices are too quiet so they need a microphone to be heard. I should wait and see if any lizards show up and tell them they can talk to me through this.

It could have been part of somebody’s necklace on a string and then the string broke and this part dropped and landed here.

What if it’s a very old piece of chocolate? I’d better check it out. It might still taste good.

Hey, wait a minute. Here’s a double one of these things. And it has some very tiny residents crawling all over it.

And I was hoping it was chocolate.

Left Out of the Adventure

No Bongo AdventuresMy people went on an adventure last night and didn’t invite me – the dog who lives for adventures. I’m not even sure what kind of adventure they went on. A treasure hunt maybe?

Here’s what happened. My younger person left kind of late last night and said he was going back to that college place. I think maybe he said that so I wouldn’t try to go with him.

My person and I went into her bedroom and she turned out the lights. So far, so good. This happens almost every night around here.

But then, I heard that strange sound. The one that makes her pick up that little thing and talk to it. I’ve never been able to figure out what she’s doing – except that she ignores me when she’s talking to it. She hardly ever talks to that thing after she’s turned out the lights, but when she finished talking to it, she turned out the lights a second time.

But then you know what she did? She talked to that thing again and left the house and drove off in her car. And she didn’t take me!

Just me and Scratchy alone in the house – in the dark. This is not right.

My person was gone for a long time and it was starting to get light when I heard her car. I know she was on an adventure because she brought my younger person back with her. This college place he keeps talking about must be all made up.

My younger person slept for awhile and then left again in his little car. He must have lost the other one on the adventure. He’s still insisting that he’s going to that made up college place.

If my person talks to that thing again tonight, I’m blocking the door so she can’t get out without taking me with her. I’ve got to make sure they don’t lose another car in that black hole they call the college place.

The Open Door

Scratchy at the open doorDo you believe it? My younger person was taking stuff from the house and putting it in his car tonight. Stuff he needed for that college place. And they locked me in the bedroom.

My people said they had to leave the door open and they didn’t want me running outside.

So what did they do? Well, they didn’t lock Scratchy in the bedroom with me. They let him have free reign of the house with that open door right there.

And the sad thing is that with all that wide open outside waiting to be explored, Scratchy stayed right at that open door and sniffed the door frame.

Scratchy sniffing the door frame

I suppose there might have been some good smells there, but there’s so many more smells further out. I’m so disappointed in Scratchy for not taking advantage of his situation. I would have been out that door in a shot. What’s wrong with Scratchy?

And when my people started heading back into the house…

Scratchy running into the house

Scratchy ran back in as fast as his little feet could take him. He does not know how to take advantage of a good situation.

I’ve got to convince my people that it’s Scratchy that needs to be locked in the bedroom and me that should be allowed by that open door.

The Final Plague

The Egyptian Firstborn Destroyed (illustration...

The Egyptian Firstborn Destroyed (illustration from the 1728 Figures de la Bible) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I’ve been waiting and waiting for God to give Pharaoh what for in these stories. God keeps sending plagues and Pharaoh just won’t give in.

So what’s God going to do to Pharaoh now? Is Pharaoh finally going to say he’s had enough?

I’m listening person, but I’m still waiting for mean old Pharaoh to get the what for he deserves.

So in the last story Pharaoh told Moses to get out of his sight, and not to appear before him again or Moses would die.

Moses said fine, but God told Moses to warn Pharaoh what would happen if he didn’t let the Israelites go to worship Him.

What’s going to happen, person?

I am listening.

About midnight God would go through the land and every firstborn son in Egypt would die – and all the firstborn cattle too.

Come on person. The animals too?

But – God told Moses to tell the Israelites to have each household slaughter a lamb for dinner, and then take some of the blood and put it on the sides and the tops of the doorframes. Wherever God saw the blood on the doorframes He would pass over that house and no destructive plague would touch that household.

Pharaoh was so upset after what happened that he called Moses in the middle of the night and told him and the Israelites to leave.

Yay! Pharaoh finally had enough!

There’s more? Okay, I’m listening.

The Egyptians urged the Israelites to get out of the country fast because they were afraid they would all die. But God had told the Israelites to ask the Egyptians for silver, gold, and clothing before they left – and the Egyptians gave them all kinds of stuff.

Did they give them any dog treats?

What? The Israelites had to leave so fast that they couldn’t put any yeast in their bread dough, so they had to eat flat bread.

I bet that would be good. It sounds kind of like dog treats to me.

So they finally got away from mean old Pharaoh. Woo woo!

What do you mean they haven’t seen the last of Pharaoh yet?

When he shows up maybe they can throw some dog treats at him.
