New Kind of Seed

Object in the distanceI was checking out my mushroom patch – the place where mushrooms have been growing on my trails, to see if there were any new ones. No new mushrooms had appeared and the old ones were getting pretty dried up and shriveled.

But then I saw it – something new in my mushroom patch. I guess someone ran out of mushroom seeds and decided to plant another kind of seed instead.

Oh, you can’t see it in the picture?

I made my person crawl up under those trees to get a closer picture.

Does this help?

Come on person, you’ve got to get even closer.

Sunglasses

I sure hope they planted lots of those sunglasses seeds because these look ripe for the picking and I wouldn’t want to take the only ones.

How do I look?

What’s for Dinner?

The Gathering of the Manna

The Gathering of the Manna (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

You mean Moses has more to do? I thought he was done with his job once he got the Israelites out of Egypt?

Moses had to lead them now? I thought God was doing that.

Where is Moses leading them?

The Promised Land? A land flowing with milk and honey? Milk and honey. I want to go there.

Okay, I’ll listen to the story.

After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea they traveled for three days in the desert without finding any water.

I’m getting thirsty just thinking about it.

Yes, I’m listening.

They finally came to a place with water called Marah, but they couldn’t drink the water because it was bitter. So they grumbled against Moses.

Moses cried out to the Lord and the Lord showed him a piece of wood to throw into the water, and when Moses did the water became sweet. Then they went to a place called Elim with twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and camped there.

The people left Elim and then they started grumbling against Moses again. This time they complained because in Egypt they had meat and all the food they wanted, and they said Moses had brought them out to the desert to starve to death.

Why didn’t Moses just send them back to Egypt? They sound like a bunch of whiners to me.

I wouldn’t whine.

Oh. I guess I would complain if I didn’t get my dog treats.

The Lord told Moses that He was going to rain down bread from heaven. But something else happened first. That evening quail covered the camp.

Woo woo! Dinner.

I am too listening. I just had to stop for a snack break.

The next morning there was a layer of dew around the camp and when the dew was gone thin flakes like frost appeared on the desert floor. The Israelites looked at each other and said, “What is it?” so they called it manna, which in Hebrew means what is it.

So what was it, person?

I know they called it manna, but what is it?

What? If I listen I’ll find out? Okay.

The manna tasted like wafers made with honey and the Lord told each person to gather what they needed and not keep any until morning.

Some people did keep some overnight and in the morning it was smelly and full of maggots.

I bet they didn’t do that again.

I’m listening.

On the sixth day the Lord told the people to gather twice as much because the following day would be the Sabbath, a day of rest. They didn’t find any manna on the ground on the Sabbath, but the manna they saved for that day was still good and didn’t have any maggots in it.

I think I would be in trouble on the Sabbath. I eat everything as soon as I get it.

Hey person, it looks like you have some extra. Can you please pass me the manna?

Let Me Play

Bongo on a Short LeashCome on person, let go of my leash. Or at least let it out so I have a chance of yanking it out of your hand.

Person, I really want to go play.

You’re always getting your camera out and making me wait while you take pictures. Why aren’t you doing it now?

Person, that’s a real pretty dog over there. Take some pictures. And while you’re distracted with the camera I’ll go over and play. You can get pictures of both of us together.

Let go of my collar, person. What’s wrong with going over and playing for a few minutes?

Maybe if I get up on my back feet and dig in I can pull away from my person.

Hey person, where are we going? I want to play with that dog over there. We never go back this way. Let’s go back the usual way. That way I can play with that dog.

What do you mean you don’t want me to play with that dog? I don’t care what its name is. Dogs don’t pay attention to other dog’s names. They just play.

I don’t see anything wrong with that name. I think coyote is a nice name.

Found and Lost

Bongo checking out a long wire on the groundSomeone’s at it again – leaving strange things on my trails. But this time they left something, and then they took something away.

I found a wire today – a very long wire. It kind of looks like a big crack in the rock, but if you look really hard you can see that wire going over my paw – not under it.

I don’t know if I’ll ever figure out how that wire got there. My person says since it’s in a wash the water probably brought it there last time it rained.

Okay – so what was it doing further up the wash. There’s nothing there but trees, bushes, and more wash.

I wonder what I could do with that wire.

I could string it across the trail so it would trip the javelina when they came to eat the prickly pears.

I could form it into a cage and put Scratchy in it.

I wonder if I could capture the thunder in it and then throw it away.

While I was figuring out what to do my person made me leave that wire where I found it. How am I going to do anything with it if I can’t take it with me?

As we headed down the trail I came across another mystery. A tree that we pass almost every day was missing a branch. I know that branch was there yesterday.

I looked everywhere for it and I never did find it. I guess maybe the rain sent it down the wash.

Whose Friend is it Anyway?

Bongo looking for all the attentionNobody told me I was getting a visitor today. Woo woo! It’s my little friend.

Or at least I thought it was my little friend. Today he seems to be my person’s little friend. They’re hanging out on the floor together and ignoring me. How can that be? The floor is my territory. Anyone on the floor should be playing with me.

At first I tried to distract them and get all the attention.

My person – of all things – locked me away in another room. How could she?

She finally let me out – I think all that scratching on the door helped – and I figured I’d better share the attention so I wouldn’t get locked up again.

.

I don’t believe it. I tried to be really nice and share all the attention and I still got ignored.

Guess I’ll hang out in the corner for awhile and chew my antler.

Finally! My little friend gave me a hug.

Bongo getting a hug

And even better yet. I got a treat!

Woo woo! Little friend, you can come over here any time.

Strange Raindrops

Airsoft pellet on the trailIt rained today – really, really hard. It made awful sounds on my roof. I didn’t like it at all.

When the rain finally stopped I took my person out for a walk. There was lots of water on my trails, but I expected to see that.

What I didn’t expect to see was that thing in the picture. It’s small. So small that my person couldn’t even get her camera to focus on it. But what is it?

I think it’s some strange new kind of raindrop. It doesn’t soak into the ground, and it doesn’t even melt like hail. I’m going to have to investigate this. Raindrops like this could explain why there was so much noise on my roof.

I walked along my trails and I didn’t see any more of those strange raindrops. But since I heard all that pounding on my roof I bet I could find some in my yard.

I got home, and sure enough – look what I found.

Airsoft pellet in the yard

A white one – but it looked just like the other one.

About this time something started clicking in my memory. I remember I used to see those – all over my house. I haven’t seen any lately, but I think I’ll put my Detective Dog hat on and see what I can find.

Woo woo! I had to move some file boxes, but here it is – buried in the carpet.

Airsoft pellet in the carpet

I’m putting my paws around it so you can see what size it is.

Airsoft pellet between Bongo's paws

But now I have a bigger mystery. How did this strange rain get into my house?

This could be a dangerous quest. When my younger person comes home next time, I’ll have to get him to get his airsoft gun out for extra protection while I investigate.

Supervision Needed

Bongo watching with two vehicles backed up to each otherMy younger person came home to see me this weekend because Monday was a holiday so he had extra time. Well, he says he didn’t just come to see me – he had to get something that was still in the broken down vehicle that got towed back here.

When I went out for my walk my younger person was doing something that looked strange. He had his little car and his big car backed up to each other. I wanted to stay because I was sure he needed someone to supervise. I wasn’t sure he knew what he was doing – you can’t drive cars when they’re like that.

But my person tugged on my leash and made me go for a walk. I tried to convince her I needed to stay, but she wouldn’t listen.

Well, she listened to the next thing. A big, loud clap of thunder coming from the direction we were headed. Sorry person, we can’t go any further that way. Got to go back and supervise.

Bongo supervising the job

I made it back just in time to make sure my younger person didn’t get lost in the space warp he had created.

Somehow he managed to put a great big tool box into a tiny little Honda.

Younger person, don’t fall innnnnn!

Who Came Out

Sugarloaf in the sunAbout a year ago I did a post celebrating September 1st. That’s when thunder season is supposed to end – or so I thought. In reality we had bunches of thunderstorms during the month of September. I was not very happy.

So this September 1st I decided I’d better not celebrate. And it’s a good thing too because we had a big thunderstorm and bunches of rain. But the storm finally ended and my person said it was safe to go out.

I’m thinking my person announced that on a loudspeaker because I wasn’t the only one who came out.

The sun came out, but I didn’t really notice. There were too many interesting things on the trail.

Bongo missing the view of Sugarloaf

Some mushrooms came out.

Then a rainbow came out, but it seemed to be rainbowerly challenged. It wasn’t all there.

Rainbow over Sugarloaf

But the best thing of all was when I discovered that my puddle came out.

What do you mean, I can’t drink the water?

I’m not drinking it. I’m just giving my puddle a kiss.

Parting of the Ways

Foster Bible Pictures 0064-1 The Water Came on...

Foster Bible Pictures 0064-1 The Water Came on Pharaoh and His Soldiers (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In the last Bible story God finally gave Pharaoh what for so bad that he let the Israelites go. But my person says Pharaoh still hadn’t had enough and the Israelites would be seeing him again.

Oh yeah, the Israelites were going to throw all their dog treats at Pharaoh. Well, I hope they save a few dog treats for me.

I’ll listen, person. Can’t I have a little fun first?

When the Israelites finally got to leave Egypt, God led them to the desert with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire to give them light at night. God took them the long way around because he didn’t want them to get in a fight with the Philistines and get discouraged.

I should have gone along. I would have whooped those Philistines.

Yes, I’m listening.

God told the Israelites to camp by the sea so Pharaoh would think they were wandering in confusion because they were hemmed in by the desert. And then God hardened Pharaoh’s heart.

And Pharaoh changed his mind when he realized that by letting the Israelites go he’d lost their services. So he took all his chariots and the army and went after them.

I hope the Israelites have those dog treats ready to throw.

Okay, I’ll listen. I promise.

The Israelites were terrified when they saw the Egyptians. They complained to Moses that they would have been better off staying in Egypt than dying in the desert.

Moses told the people not to be afraid and to stand firm because God would deliver them. The angel of the Lord who had been traveling in front of Israel went behind them – between them and the Egyptians – and so did the pillar of cloud.

The Lord told Moses to raise his staff and stretch out his hand over the sea, and when he did that the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind. The Israelites went through the sea on dry ground with a wall of water on each side of them.

Woo woo! That means they get to keep their dog treats. And they won’t even get soggy.

I am too listening.

The Egyptians followed the Israelites through the sea…

Oops! I take that back about the dog treats.

But when the Israelites were across, the Lord told Moses to stretch out his hand again so the water would flow back over the Egyptians, their chariots, and their horsemen.

So the Israelites made it across, and the Egyptians went swimming but didn’t make it out alive.

And I got the dog treats.

Hey person, these dog treats aren’t very good. They taste like flat bread. Can you go to the pet store and get me some better ones?

Rain on the Roof

Small cloud raining on one spot on a houseI like water – a lot. Even when it’s raining on me. I don’t mind getting wet. In fact, it’s kind of cool.

But one thing I don’t like is the sound of rain pounding down on the roof when I’m inside the house. It’s a creepy, scary kind of sound – second only to thunder. And we get a lot of it this time of year.

Lately, we’ve had a new kind of rain on the roof. It sounds way different than the usual rain. It makes more of a pitter patter sound.

And this new rain doesn’t rain all over the roof at the same time. I hear it in one spot and then it moves along the roof going pitter patter, pitter patter. It’s not as scary as the usual rain. I actually don’t mind it much at all.

I’ve never seen this strange rain do what it does when I’m outside. You’d think with all my walks I’d catch that pitter pattery rain in action.

My person took her camera outside when it was happening and tried to take a picture of it. Except by the time she got outside it had stopped. She said the only thing she saw was a squirrel in a tree.
