Hidden Hedgehogs

Bongo under a bush looking at cactus blossomsLast year there were tons of little hedgehog cacti blooming on my trails. This year they are blooming again, but not as many.

Maybe that’s why they seem to be hiding themselves. They must think they need protection, and since there’s no protection in numbers they’re looking for other ways.

Check out this one that I’m trying to get at.

It’s hiding under a catclaw bush. There’s a reason these bushes are called what they’re called.

But if I can brave Scratchy’s claws I can brave anything. This bush ain’t got nothing on me.

Hedgehog cactus blooming under prickly pear

Here’s another one trying to use prickly things for protection. I know what those prickly things do. I’m staying out of there.

Hedgehog cactus blooming under a bush

This one really tucked itself away. If it hadn’t been for its bright color we never would have seen it.

Hedgehog cactus blossoms

My person will crawl under anything for a good picture. It’s a good thing that bush didn’t have pricklers. I would have had to take the tweezers to her when we got home.

Hedgehog cactus blooming under bush

It seems that all the cacti are hiding under bushes.

Hedgehog cactus flowerss

I think my person was brushing dirt off her knees after taking this picture.

Hedgehog cactus flowers surrounded by a bush

This cactus used a different approach. Instead of blooming under a bush it decided to bloom in a bush.

But this next cactus is very brave indeed.

Hedgehog cactus appears to be holding out two flowers

Standing right out in the open and holding up an offering.

Trekking with Toby

Toby and Bongo on the TrailWhat perfect timing!

Today when I headed out my front door to go for a walk on my trails Toby, my neighbor dog was heading out his front door too. To go for a walk on my trails.

Toby’s my friend so I always let him use my trails, but we don’t often use them at the same time. Today would be a special treat.

Toby always smells really good so I give him a few sniffs every time we meet.

.

Bongo and Toby

Then off we headed to the trails.

We were walking along enjoying each other’s company and checking out a smell or two, when I looked back (I’m usually in the lead) and Toby was going the wrong way.

Toby was taking the trail that headed back home!

Toby, wait! We’ve barely gotten started.

Come back Toby! There are more trails to explore. More adventures to be had.

More smells to sniff.

Toby missed it all. I had to trek on the trails without him.

And what’s more disappointing is that I had hoped he could help me with my Detective Dog work – you know, kind of like Dr. Watson was to Sherlock Holmes.

Because I’ve got another mystery to solve.

I’ve got to figure out what this giant asparagus is doing poking out of this spiky ball.

Yucca with a shoot coming out

Maybe I should go bark at Toby’s door.

The Empty Trail

Bongo in an empty parking lotYesterday I posted about my hike in West Fork. It was so much fun. There were lots of people and dogs on the trail. And shade. It was nice and cool there.

Today I went back to my own trails.

Empty.

The parking lot was empty.

The trails were empty.

The only ones on my trails were me, my person, and a few birds.

I didn’t even see any lizards.

Bongo on an empty trail

I think everybody went to West Fork and stayed there.

Maybe I should go back there too.

I miss all the people and dogs. It was cool and shady there. And there was water.

But wait a minute. I just thought of something.

These are my trails, and I’ve finally got them all to myself.

I don’t have to tell any other dogs whose trails these are.

I don’t have to worry about people who might not want to give me loves.

I don’t even have to stand aside while people – and dogs – come walking past me.

I think I’ll put a sign on my trails. “Bongo’s Trails – Go to West Fork.”

I won’t leave that sign up forever though.

Because I want to go back to West Fork again. I’ll take that sign down then.

West Fork

Bongo with his nose out the car windowOver the weekend I got in the car with my people and we started going somewhere I’ve never been before. My people said it was a place called Oak Creek Canyon. All I know is that the smells there were a lot different than the smells on my trails.

I sure hope this isn’t a new route to the dog hotel.

The car stopped and when I got out I didn’t see a dog hotel anywhere in sight.

Whew! I can relax now.

We walked a little ways and then I found it. It’s a trail sign and it says West Fork.

Bongo and a trail sign

This is where I told my people to go. My friend Lola and her person Shary said it’s the best trail ever, and my people have never taken me here before. That’s okay, because now I can take them here.

Hey, check this out! It’s a bridge – and there’s water down there.

Bongo and his younger person walking across a bridge

Now I’ve got to figure out how to get to that water.

Bongo and his younger person walking on a trail

This trail is nice, but I’ve seen lots of little trails that lead to the water. How come we’re not taking one of them?

Bongo in a narrow stream of water

Finally! The water!

Hey, this is like a Slip N Slide.

Bongo going downstream

Here I go!

Bongo in the water

You want to do what?

I just got here and I’m not coming out.

***

My people finally convinced me that there were more trails and more water to swim in and they were right.

Red cliff among trees

Distant cliff

Red cliff hiding behind trees

Creek, red cliff, and trees

My person even found flowers to take pictures of.

White Flower

I think my person is a flower magnet.

***

Finally! I got to go swimming again.

Bongo all wet

I’m just getting out for a minute.

Bongo looking away from the creek

You want to go where?

I don’t think so. I’m not done swimming yet.

***

I was forced to leave the water and head back to the car, but I’ve got a plan.

Bongo with his leash tangled around the sign post

See if my people can get me to leave this place now.

I Didn’t Do It

Bongo near a knocked over trash canI don’t get it. Why would my person think I did this? I was just trying to tell her what Scratchy did while she was gone.

I would never knock over that garbage can. Why would I do that? I know how to open the can so why would I knock it over?

Oops. I mean, Scratchy knows how to open the can.

Sometimes there’s nothing good that I can reach though. It’s all down in the bottom.

Well I had to try reaching it because Scratchy couldn’t. I was only helping him out.

Bongo, a downed trash can, and garbage on the floor

What’s that stuff on the floor?

Scratchy put it there. Besides, you didn’t want it anyway.

Scratchy, I told you that you should have finished that stuff off. Then no one would know what you did.

What do you mean, I have a guilty look?

I’m not guilty.

Wait, wait! Is this better?

Bongo looking innocent

Do I look innocent now?

Bird Seed

Soil

Soil (Photo credit: arimoore)

Jesus told a story about bird seed?

He did too. He was by the lake and so many people came that he got in a boat and told them stories while they stood on the shore.

You know, those stories with two bulls in them – those pair a bulls.

But this story wasn’t about bulls, it was about bird seed.

***

A farmer went out to sow his seed. Some of the seed fell along the path and the birds came and ate it up.

***

See, I told you it was a story about bird seed.

What do you mean, there’s more to the story?

***

Some of the farmer’s seed fell in rocky places without much soil. It grew quickly, but when the sun came out the plants withered because they had no root.

***

I don’t get it. I understand bird seed – but rock seed?

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

Some of the seed fell among thorns which grew up and choked the plants.

***

Maybe the birds could eat the thorn seeds.

I am listening.

***

Some of the seed fell on good soil and produced a crop – a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown.

***

I sure hope that crop was of something I like to eat.

There’s more to the story? I’ve still got to listen?

But I was getting ready to eat.

***

Jesus disciples asked him what the parable meant and He told them.

Jesus said that the seed is the word of God. Those on the path hear the word, but then the devil takes the word from their hearts so they won’t believe and be saved.

***

You mean those birds are the devil? I thought I saw a few birds looking at me with the evil eye.

***

Those on the rock receive the word with joy, but since they have no root they fall away when things get hard.

***

It’s really rocky where I live. I wonder if that takes everybody’s joy away. It takes mine away when a little rock gets stuck in my paw.

I am too listening.

***

The thorns are those who hear but worries, and money, and stuff become more important to them.

***

Does that include food?

***

The seed on the good soil stands for those who hear the word, understand it, stick with it, and produce a crop.

***

Oh, I get it now. When the word falls on good soil, that means more food.

Come on everybody, get away from that path, and those rocks, and the thorns. You’ve got to hang out on the good soil.

Get moving. I’m waiting for the food.

Eat What You Want Day

Bongo in front of the fridgeToday is Eat What You Want Day. This is absolutely my favorite day of the year.

Let’s see. What do I want to eat today?

Maybe some of that fish I’ve been wanting lately.

Or how about some ice cream?

Wait a minute. I know! I’m going to eat a nice, big, juicy steak. And then some meaty bones that I can chew on for the rest of the day.

And some treats tossed in here and there all day.

My mouth is drooling watering just thinking about all that good food.

Here comes my person. I bet she’s coming to open the refrigerator for me right now and give me something delicious.

Wait! What? What do you mean you don’t have any of those good things to eat in the house?

But it’s Eat What You Want Day. How can I eat what I want if it’s not here to eat?

Person, you’ve got a job to do. You’ve got to go to the store right now and get me everything I want to eat.

You’re not? You’re not going to the store?

You’re giving me what to eat? Dog food?

That’s all I get is dog food?

Bongo with his head inside a dog food bag

I guess that wasn’t so bad.

Stranger at the Door

Bongo waiting at the doorWhen I hear a stranger come into my yard, or knock on my door I bark.

I figure that will keep any strangers who are up to no good away.

Sometimes my person will open the door for a stranger. I stand there right by her side to make sure she’s safe.

After all, that’s my job isn’t it?

Once I decide that the stranger is safe, what I’d really like to do is go out and get them to give me loves. Lots of loves.

But my person is always holding tight to my collar so I can’t go out.

I know she’s probably nervous about having a stranger at the door, but I wish she didn’t get that nervous. She’s got me by her side and once I’ve figured it’s safe to go out and get loves, my person should figure that I know what I’m doing and there’s no danger here.

I know who’s good to get loves from and who isn’t. I wish my person would realize that.

But sometimes a stranger comes knocking at the door that even I wouldn’t open the door for.

A stranger that even I would not want to get loves from – and I like to get loves from almost everyone.

But not this stranger.

Tumbleweed at the door

I think I’ll leave the door closed.

Don’t Steal My Blog

Lizard on the rock in the shadeI think somebody is trying to take over my trails. And steal my blog. And become the center of attention.

How dare this creature pose for the main picture in my blog post? That spot should always be reserved for me.

At least that creature is small. Maybe all anyone sees is a rock and a bunch of branches. Maybe that little thing blends in with the background.

***

Now that the weather is getting warmer, lizards have been scurrying around on my trails.

I don’t even bother trying to chase them. They run right off and hide before I even get near.

We have the wimpiest creatures on my trails. The only ones willing to get near me are my dog friends – and the people, of course.

All the creatures that live on my trails run off at the mere thought that someone might be coming too close. Even the birds fly off when we get near – as if we could ever catch them up a tree.

Maybe I should bring Scratchy on my trails with me. He could climb up the tree after those birds and then when they fly off he’d be stuck there.

Hey, great idea. Why didn’t I think of that before?

But where was I going with this?

Oh yes, that lizard.

It’s a good thing he does run off so easily.

He’s going to have a hard time taking over my blog if he’s running off to hide in the bushes.

Lizard running into the bushes

Now to go get Scratchy.

Useless Yellow Flowers

Bongo sniffing yellow flowersI don’t know what’s so special about these flowers. They don’t even smell good. No one’s left any messages here.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Check this out.

Bongo getting into weeds near yellow flowers

See these weeds here? These dried up weeds? They’re much more appetizing that any old yellow flowers.

Why don’t you take some pictures of these, person? I could hang them on the wall near my bed and look at them when I’m not on my trails.

I can’t believe it! There she goes right back to those flowers. No matter how much I tell her what’s important, she still doesn’t get it.

I think I’m about to give up on people. They like all the strangest things, and they don’t seem to care about any of the good things in life.

Person, if you can’t take pictures of any of the right stuff just put your camera away.

Yellow Flowers

See, she did it anyway. Total disrespect. She just won’t listen to me.

Now put your camera away, person.

You found a what?

Wait a minute. What? What?

Someone’s trying to take over my yellow flowers?

Butterfly on yellow flowers

How dare that butterfly hang around here?

You did send that butterfly away, didn’t you person?

Those yellow flowers are mine.
