Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

Bongo behind barsOctober is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and since I came from dog jail a shelter I thought I should help promote this.

So I’m going to tell you how awful it is living in dog jail. I was surrounded by all these other dogs and none of us did anything wrong, but they made us live in cages.

We didn’t have anybody to love on us or take us for walks – well, sometimes we did, but we had to share a few people with a whole lot of dogs.

And everybody wanted their turn for loves and walks.

Bongo looking down the trail

There was never enough to go around.

When my people finally came and took me out of that dog jail and brought me to my new forever home I wagged my tail and jumped for joy.

Well, I was a little nervous at first, but after I realized I got to stay, then I did those things.

And I had someone around to toss balls to me anytime I wanted.

Bongo behind couches with a tennis ball

And someone to pull mischief on. Whew! I’m glad I got that last sentence crossed out before you read it.

Maybe she'll get out of bed for my snake

Maybe she’ll get out of bed for my snake.

There are still lots of lonely dogs in shelters everywhere.

So if you have an empty spot in your house and heart that could be filled by a dog, there’s no better time than now to give a dog a new forever home.

You’ll be glad you did.

And so will the dog.

Mischief: Week Two

Bongo with a tennis ball in his mouthThis is the second week in a row that I’ve had to post mischief about my people.

I don’t know what such a perfect dog is doing with such mischievous people.

I mean, how do I deserve this?

I guess I’d better tell you what happened.

First, my person left early in the morning.

I didn’t worry too much.

I figured she’d be back soon and take me for a walk on my trails.

Well, she came back all right.

And you know what she did?

She picked up my younger person and they both left in her car.

Without me.

All I got was a little bathroom break in the backyard.

And when they got back home a long time later – I snuck a peek while my person put pictures on her my computer from that new camera of hers. You know, the one that she takes walks with and leaves me at home.

And I couldn’t believe what I saw.

Black bear

My people went and hung out with bears!

Brown bear with paws crossed

They went to a place called Bearizona – without me.

But that wasn’t the worst of it.

I can see maybe hanging out with bears for an afternoon.

But what else they did really makes me feel dejected.

Chicken with wild head feathers

They hung out with chickens.

Off Without Me

planes flying overYesterday I warned you that it would take me two posts to report all the mischief my people were up to this weekend.

So here’s the second post. Notice that it doesn’t start with a picture of me.

First my people went up to the airport and didn’t take me. And I understand dogs are allowed at the airport.

My person took that camera though.

And then, to make it worse they came back home and they left again.

And they still didn’t take me.

When my person got her new hiking boots I was thinking I could drag walk with her up some steep rocky areas.

Well, my younger person stole my idea.

He took my person up some steep, rocky areas.

Looking out at Fay Canyon

My person and that camera.

Not only did they go up one steep, rocky area.

When they climbed down that they went further down the trail and found another place to climb.

Courthouse Rock and Bell Rock from Fay Canyon

This is totally not fair.

I mean, this was my idea to help my person test out her new hiking boots.

I might have to hide in the trunk next time to make sure I get to come along.

Bongo in the trunk of a car

Oh, wait.

You did what, person?

You didn’t just climb rocks – you took pictures of flowers too?

Red flower

Never mind then. If you’re going to stop for flowers I think I’ll just stay home.

The New Pet

Bongo sitting in front of a futonThis is Monday Mischief. The day us dogs are supposed to report all the mischief that happened over the weekend.

And I have a lot to report.

I’ve got so much to report that I think it’s going to take me two blog posts to get it all in.

It wasn’t my mischief though.

No, I was the perfect dog all weekend long.

But my people – I think they were up to no good.

First, my person got this new pet.

She didn’t ask me about getting a new pet.

Even Scratchy didn’t know about it and I don’t think he wanted anything to do with that new pet either.

And that pet started taking over the house.

First it was in the living room.

Then it was in the bedroom. I know my person thinks it’s her bedroom, but my bed is in there too so it’s really my bedroom.

And that new pet is not allowed in my bedroom.

I mean, what if it tries to sleep in my bed.

Well, I must have convinced my person’s new pet that the bedroom is not where it is supposed to be because next thing I know that pet is back out in the living room.

It’s probably thinking about taking over the bathroom – or the kitchen.

I hope it doesn’t try to eat my food.

I guess my person wasn’t thinking though when she got that new pet.

Or maybe Scratchy and I convinced her that no more pets should be allowed in the house.

Because finally my person got out a jar, convinced the new pet to jump into it, and then she took that jar away with the pet inside.

Large spider on a wall

I hope my person has learned her lesson and no more new pets will be allowed into the house.

Cat Mischief

Scratchy on the back of a futonSome people think it’s really cool living with a cat.

That’s because they have no idea what their cat is thinking.

Cats look so innocent and sweet. But deep down inside they are plotting how they can get you.

And when they do something mischievous they purr and rub against you and pretend to be ever so innocent.

And the dog always gets blamed.

You wouldn’t believe how many times I get blamed for things that Scratchy does.

I don’t know why everybody looks to me first.

I’m such a perfect dog. I don’t do anything wrong.

It’s always the cat.

I just wish my people would realize that.

When there’s garbage on the floor – it was the cat.

When the covers are messed up on the bed – it was the cat.

When my hair is all over the furniture that I’m not supposed to be on – it was because Scratchy rubbed up against me and put my hair there.

But finally, I’ve caught Scratchy in the act.

He was up to mischief and no way can he deny it.

And I kind of blame my person for this too.

She put food in my dish before I came back in the house.

I can’t help it if there were some new smells outside that I had to check out.

That’s my job, isn’t it? Making sure the yard is safe from anything causing strange odors.

So anyway, when I did come in I caught Scratchy in the act.

Scratchy eating Bongo's food

And it’s sure good I caught him when I did.

If I’d been a little later I might not have been able to write any more blog posts –

because I would have starved to death.

Don’t ever live with a cat.

P.S. I have some blogging cat friends and they’re okay. They never eat my food.

Pulling Mischief

Bongo and his younger person on the trailMy younger person has been home for the last few days and he let me take him for a walk.

I got really excited because I don’t get to go on walks with him very often.

But we got out a little ways on my trails and I sensed something.

There’s a storm brewing somewhere.

.

.

lit up clouds

You see it?

Oh. Well, maybe not in that direction.

It must be over here.

cloudy sky over Chinmey Rock

I know there’s a storm somewhere.

Maybe we just can’t see it yet.

I decided we shouldn’t go any further.

And you know what my younger person did?

Bongo being dragged by his collar

He pulled mischief on me and started dragging me along.

Do you believe it?

I guess walking is better than getting dragged.

Bongo and his younger person walking on the trail again

So I walked for awhile.

But then I’d had it.

I know that storm is somewhere around here.

I’m not taking a chance.

Bongo pulling against the leash

I’m not going any further.

Bongo giving even more resistance to the leash

Seriously. I mean it.

Bongo sitting at the end of the leash

Two can play at this game.

Younger person shortening the leash while Bongo still sits

So who’s the best mischief maker now?

Mischief!

Bongo not movingI’ve got a complaint, and I should have posted this for Monday Mischief, but when someone pulls mischief on me, I’ve got to post it when it happens.

You see, my person tried to tell me everything was fine outside. I knew it wasn’t but she made me go.

My neighbor across the street was in on it too. He said there wasn’t any thunder.

But I knew it was coming. The wind was blowing, the clouds were dark, and I knew I would hear that awful noise any minute.

It even started raining. I swear I felt a drop or two.

I took my person into my wash because it seemed like the safest place.

But then it happened. The wind picked up and I heard a rumbly in the sky. Not loud, but it still meant business in my book.

Bongo trying to climb the rocks

I tried to get my person to head the safest direction, but for some reason she wouldn’t go for it.

More mischief on her part, I’m sure.

Since my person wouldn’t go up that hill there was only one direction to head – and it led straight to my toadies.

And you know what my person did?

She pulled more mischief on me!

Bongo tied to a dead tree

She tied me to a tree.

Bongo tied to and tangled on a tree

She tried to tell me it was so I wouldn’t trample the toadies.

Bongo looking down from the tree he's tied to

I’ll trample those toadies alright.

They’re pulling mischief on me too.

They took my puddle.

Tiny toads in mud

There were little toadies hopping around everywhere that my puddle used to be.

They seemed to be settling in.

Toads in a mud hut

They even had little toad houses.

This mischief has gone far enough.

I’m having it out with those toadies right now.

Those toadies are going to have to move and give me back my puddle.

Who’s into Mischief?

Bongo with a ball between his pawsMy person left the house early this morning. I don’t really like it when she does that, but it does give me more chances to get into mischief.

And what my person doesn’t know won’t hurt her.

So I got on her bed and messed it up. There’s two cats now, so I can always blame them if my person says anything.

I checked out the litter box. What?! My person cleaned it before she left? That’s not fair.

Then I looked to see if there was any cat food left.

This is not good. My person is getting better about remembering to put the cat food where I can’t reach it.

I hear somebody at the door. It can’t be my person. I didn’t hear her car. I heard another car though.

It’s my friend who comes sometimes when my person’s not here.

Don’t anybody tell my person that I have a friend over when she’s gone. I might get in trouble.

Hey wait a minute!

My friend let me go outside, but now she’s ignoring me.

She’s paying attention to Gizmo!

Gizmo looking to his right

What is this?

Gizmo, go hide in the bedroom or something. This is my friend. She came to see me.

What do you mean, she was your friend first?

You used to live with her?

Gizmo on the back of the couch

And now you live with me?

I don’t know what to make of this.

How can I have secret mischief if you’re the one having a friend over and not me?

Gizmo lying on the floor looking cute

Gizmo, I’m telling. You’re not supposed to have friends over when my – oh, I have to say “our” now – person is gone.

Not Me

Bongo near a messy bedHey person, you forgot to make your bed this morning. You’d better make it. It looks pretty messy.

What in the world are you talking about?

You’re trying to blame me because you didn’t make your bed?

I’m not even allowed on your bed. My bed’s down on the floor next to yours. I might mess my bed up, but I would never mess yours up.

.

.

.

.

An unmade bed

I don’t know why there’s a pillow and a blanket right where you sleep. Maybe you slept on top of them.

How would you know if you slept on them or not? You were asleep.

Well, if you didn’t mess up your bed like that then it must have been Scratchy. You let him sleep on the bed.

How come you let Scratchy sleep on the bed and not me?

Scratchy on bed with Bongo below

That is totally unfair. You’re showing favoritism to cats.

That’s what you get for it. Scratchy got on your bed while you were gone and totally messed it up.

I wasn’t going to tell, but he’s just gone too far this time.

What do you mean, you don’t believe me? Of course Scratchy did it.

Bongo looking innocent in front of the messy bed

Look into my eyes, person. I did not mess up that bed.

That bed is not even messed up. What you see is a perfectly well made bed.

You will get into bed like normal tonight, without noticing anything awry.

What?

What do you mean, this isn’t working?

I didn’t do it. Really.

I Like the Old One

Bongo on a short leashMy person is definitely the mischief maker today. You see, I had the perfect leash. Well, perfect would have been walking without a leash, but if I’ve got to walk my person with a leash, this one was the best. When my person tried to keep me from going out further on that leash, it didn’t work. That leash was definitely on my side. I could go get loves from people my person tried to keep me away from, and meet up with dogs I didn’t know yet. I mean, how am I going to add to my list of girlfriends if I don’t get a chance to meet any? But now, I have a new leash. . .

Bongo looking at the leash

Come on person, ease up! I’ve got places to go, smells to sniff, and people and dogs to meet.

Bongo tight on a leash and looking back

Can you give me a little more slack? You’re cramping my style, person.

Bongo on a tight leash looking at a distant dog

This is not good at all. That dog – you see that dog way over there? Well that dog came right up near me, and if I’d had the old leash attached to my person I would have been able to get to that dog and give him what for. He pretends he’s being friendly, but I know what he’s really thinking.

Wait a minute. It was because of that dog that I got my old leash working just right. I guess I’d better be nice to him next time he comes over.

Hey person, you’ve got to let me go. I’ve got to go tell that dog we’re buddies now.

I think the power of this new leash has gone to my person’s head.

She is such a mischief maker.
