About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

New Fruit

Bongo in profileI found an answer. And I didn’t even know there was a mystery.

I guess my person thought there was a mystery, but I wasn’t paying any attention.

So I didn’t even need my Detective Dog hat to find the answer.

Maybe my person should get a Detective Dog Person hat.

Here’s what happened.

Near my house, on the way to my trails, are some pine trees.

A few years ago my person noticed some blossoms peeking out from between the pines.

Pine trees don’t have blossoms and my person thought this looked pretty cool. She even made me stop while she took pictures of them.

White blossoms and pines

Every year there were a few more blossoms peeking out, and the branches they were on grew leaves.

Blossoms and Pines

But that was as far as it went. The only mystery I could find was why my person stopped and took pictures every year.

But this year something else happened.

The tree grew fruit.

Fruit growing on a tree

Green fuzzy fruit.

But we didn’t get rain and the fruit didn’t get any bigger.

I didn’t think I’d ever find out what that fruit was.

It seemed to be a new kind of fruit that I’d never heard of before.

Green, puny fruit.

But I walked by that fruit one more time and something had changed.

Almonds growing on a tree

Now that tree had green, puny, split fruit.

My person said she knew what this fruit was and she never even got her Detective Person hat.

Oh nuts. It’s not fruit at all.

It’s an almond tree.

Mysterious Hole

Bongo checking out a hole in the groundSince we’ve gotten lots of rain here, the ground on my trails which is usually hard as rocks, has softened up.

It’s become so soft that somebody decided to dig a big hole – right next to my trail.

This hole was awfully close to some cactus so I thought I’d better investigate to see who might have done such a thing.

A few sniffs here – and a few sniffs there.

Hmmm. There are so many smells around here. It’s hard to figure who might have dug this.

What? Huh? What are you saying, person?

You think I dug this hole?

Bongo with a suspecting look

Where would you possibly have come up with an idea like that?

I’ve been dragging you around on this leash. I haven’t been out of your sight for a minute.

I don’t know when you think I would have had a chance to dig this without you seeing me.

Besides, I’m not much of a digger.

I bet you can’t even think of the last time you saw me digging a hole.

Bongo digging in the yard

Oh. Well, that was an exception.

That Frisbee was brand new and I really needed to bury it.

Purple Droppings

Bongo sniffing plums on the groundThis is really strange.

It’s happening in the very same spot.

But the color has changed.

This might take some investigation.

I haven’t even made it to my trails yet. I’m just a few feet from my front door.

I’m going to run back home for my Detective Dog hat.

.

Detective Dog

Awhile back, way last May I think it was, I was walking to my trails and I hadn’t even made it yet when I found all these strange green things all over the ground.

I was lucky I wasn’t hit by any of them as they fell. But there they were. All over the place.

I never did solve that mystery to my satisfaction (I know, dogs like me shouldn’t be using such big words but I’ve been blogging for a long time now and it seems to be affecting my brain.). I’m still working on that investigation.

So now, I’m walking by that very same spot where I found all those green things so long ago.

And in that very same spot I find purple things all over the ground.

I’m pretty sure a flock of pesky birds dropped those green things. I think they may have been out to get a neighborhood cat – or worse yet, one of my dog buddies who walks by here.

So now I’ve got to figure out what those birds are up to.

Did they drop those purple things too?

Maybe those green things were too small, or too easy to spot.

So those birds found something bigger that blends in better.

At least I don’t think I have to worry about this anymore.

With all the wind we’ve been having I think it shook those birds out of the trees around here.

Good riddance birds.

Take your purple things with you and don’t come back.

Fish and a Coin

Peter finds a coin in a fish's mouth

Image from ChristArt

What? Really?

After all this time you’re finally going to tell me another Bible story with fish in it?

Hallelujah!

Did I say that word? What does it mean?

It means Praise the Lord?

Well, hallelujah then. You’d think with all those disciples who are fishermen, that every story would have fish in it.

Okay, I’ll listen. I hope there’s a lot of fish in this story. Some for me and enough for me to share too.

***

Jesus and His disciples went back to Capernaum and the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”

***

Okay, I’m confused. What’s a drachma? Is it some kind of fish?

A coin? Worth about a day’s wages?

What does that have to do with fish?

Could you buy fish with it?

I am listening.

***

Peter assured the tax collectors that Jesus does pay the tax.

When Peter came into the house Jesus spoke first. He asked Peter if he thought the kings of the earth collected taxes from their own sons, or from others.

***

If those kings collected taxes from their own sons, would that be like you making me pay taxes to you?

You’d better not do that. I’m not giving up any of my treats.

***

Peter answered, “From others.”

And Jesus said, “Then the sons are exempt.”

***

Whew! That means I don’t have to give up my treats.

Wait. That means that Jesus doesn’t have to pay tax either since He’s the Son of God and the temple is God’s house.

So Jesus can just walk away from that tax collector, and Peter with him since he’s in God’s family too.

***

Jesus said to Peter, “But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line.”

***

Now we’re getting somewhere.

Yes, I’ll listen.

***

Jesus told Peter to take the first fish he catches and open its mouth. He’ll find a four-drachma coin inside. Jesus said to take that coin and use it to pay both their taxes.

***

A fish and a coin!

I’m in dog heaven. Fish for dinner and money to buy treats for dessert.

I’m a Starbucks Dog

Bongo drinking Starbucks waterI really do not like thunder. It’s one of the most horrible things there is.

But I’m thinking now that maybe there’s a good side to thunder.

Thunder has some benefits of its own.

Yesterday I got to go to church – twice – because my person didn’t want to leave me home alone while it thundered.

But today was even better.

For the first time ever, I got to go to Starbucks.

Well, I didn’t get to go in Starbucks, but they have tables outside my Starbucks – and dogs are allowed to sit there.

They even have a special Starbucks drink for dogs outside their front door.

And not only did I get to go to Starbucks, but so did my friend Pablo.

Bongo sniffing Pablo

I hadn’t seen Pablo for months and months so I had to check him out and make sure it was really him.

Pablo and I met lots of new people while we were there and we got lots of loves.

Bongo getting loves from kids

Even kid loves. The best kind.

We saw some strange animals too.

Colorful horse and turtle sculpture

I’ve never seen animals like this on my trails.

They seemed friendly though. I wanted to play with them, but I couldn’t get them to take notice of me.

So I decided to check out the view from our table.

Bongo looking through a fence

I couldn’t see much. There were a lot of bushes in the way.

My person said she had a better view though.

I guess being taller than a dog has its advantages.

Sedona Red Rocks

My person says there’s a rock in this picture named after a famous dog.

Hey, I’m famous. Is there a rock named after me?

What? It’s not me? It’s a dog named Snoopy?

Snoopy Rock

I kept waiting for Snoopy to get up and bark so I could spot him, but my person says all he does is lay on his back.

He’s laying there on top of the rocks to the right of the tallest rocks in the picture.

I guess I need to work on getting as famous as Snoopy.

That way I can sleep all day too.

They’re Back

Bongo in a big puddleI’ve got a real mystery on my hands paws.

.

.

.

.

.

.

I’m going to have to put my Detective Dog hat on for sure.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

There. I feel better already.

Oh yeah. I guess I’d better tell you what this mystery is all about.

About a week ago I told you about my puddle invasion.

My puddle had appeared after missing for weeks, but then I discovered it had been invaded by tadpoles.

Then both the puddle and the tadpoles disappeared, but when the puddle came back it left the tadpoles somewhere else.

For a few days now my puddle has been sticking around – just like usual. No tadpoles – just a puddle.

Last night we had a thunderstorm. It was really horrible, waking up in the middle of the night to all that thunder.

I wish it would leave me alone.

But I think tadpoles must like thunder.

Because today when I went out on my trails, not only had my puddle grown –

but when I stuck my feet into it …

Bongo's paws in a puddle with tadpoles

I felt these tickly things bumping into me.

Tadpoles in a muddy puddle

The tadpoles had returned.

And now it’s up to Detective Dog to figure out what those tadpoles are up to.

And what they intend to do with my puddle.

Lost People

Lost people on the trailI think it’s pretty hard to get lost on my trails – even when I go outside of my usual rounds, but of course it’s pretty easy to follow the smells.

My person thinks the trails are hard to get lost on too, but she uses a different method to find her way.

She’s taller than me so she can see further. She says there are lots of landmarks to find your way by.

It’s also hard to go very far without running into either houses or something that falls between a very large rock and a very small mountain.

I can’t read them so I have to trust my person when she says those tall poles sticking out of the ground hold signs that point out the trails.

In some places there are even cairns to mark the trails. At least my person says they mark the trails.

I thought they were put there so dogs could leave messages for each other. At least that’s what we use them for.

Even with all these ways to navigate (Person, navigate is too big a word for me.) the trails, my trails can be really tricky for new people. There are little loops that go off and come back to the main trail. Maybe they were put there on purpose so people would go in circles and not be able to find their car again. Then the trail loop car collectors could take their pick of the cars that were left.

Those car collectors probably don’t like my person much though. When she’s asked, she tells those lost people how to get out of the loop.

Bongo in front of a bush

I think my person’s pretty cool though. Today I got loves from some people she was helping.

Those people were really lost. They were trying to find a place called Wisconsin.

Weed Pulling Traitor

cat lying in a yardSomething is terribly wrong with this picture.

And my person is a real traitor. I think I can even get Scratchy to stand with me on this.

.

.

.

.

.

Bongo cornering Scratchy under a desk

Well, maybe.

You see, my person said she was going out to pull weeds in the front yard.

And she wouldn’t let me come with her because there’s no fence in the front.

I would stay in the yard. Really. For a minute anyway.

So my person went out and left me in the house.

She didn’t bother to tell me she already had a helper.

Cat eating grass

And she let that cat eat my weeds.

I like weeds. I could have eaten all of them myself.

But that’s not even the worst part.

back of cat's head next to railroad tie

That cat looks awfully close to my person in that picture.

My person is only supposed to be close to me. No other animals allowed.

Okay Scratchy – maybe a little bit to you.

But not to that strange neighbor cat!

Oh dear! It’s a good thing I got hold of my person’s camera and checked her pictures out.

Cat on a lap

Is that cat sitting on my person’s lap?

This calls for measures of the strictest kind.

My person will no longer be allowed to pull weeds without my supervision.

And next time she goes out to pull some –

I’ve got a cat to chase.

Walking’s not an Option

Bongo looking at the viewLately I’ve been wanting to go on a different trail – it’s a little longer than the way we usually go on my trails.

But my person always says she’s too busy, or it’s too hot, or she comes up with any number of excuses.

Today it was cloudy and cooler, and my person didn’t have bunches of stuff to do, so we got to go on that trail.

We were having a great time – until I heard it.

Thunder!

Over there – and that way too!

We were surrounded!

Person, why did you want to go on this trail? We could have been almost home by now.

There was only one direction to go – and my person wouldn’t let me go that way.

Okay, fine. Then we’re not going at all.

Bongo holding his ground

Bongo refusing to move

It became a game of tug of war.

Until my collar came off.

Then my person did something really strange.

She walked to the end of my her leash, sat on the ground, and started taking pictures of me.

Bongo reluctantly walking

I like the sound her camera makes. Eventually I walked to where she sat.

Bongo Profile

Then she moved back to the end of her leash, and made me walk to her again.

Bongo looking at red rocks

Bongo walking toward the camera

Then she did it all over again.

Bongo walking, Thunder Mountain behind him

My person thinks I’m afraid of this thunder, but I’ve been thinking. Sometimes I complain too much when she stops all the time to take pictures. I think I’ll be nice to her today and let her take all the pictures she wants.

And just to prove I was doing it to be nice to her, when we got past the part with all the best scenery, I started walking with her again.

National Ice Cream Day

Chocolate ice cream in an ice cream makerYesterday was National Ice Cream Day.

So my person decided to celebrate the day by making me some homemade ice cream.

At least I thought she was making me some homemade ice cream.

She started cooking up all the ingredients.

It smelled good, but there was something missing.

A really important smell.

I wanted to make sure my person hadn’t forgotten the special ingredient so I asked her if she remembered to put the fish in.

She looked at me really funny.

I guess that means she forgot.

I tried to convince her that there was still time to put it in and she told me there were no fish in Mexican Chocolate ice cream.

Mexican Chocolate?!

That sounds like a flavor for a Chihuahua – not for a big dog like me.

I tried to explain to my person that since she was making this ice cream for me she should make my favorite flavor.

And you know what she told me?

My person said this was not National Dog Ice Cream Day and Mexican Chocolate is my younger person’s favorite flavor.

And since my younger person is home for the weekend my person is making his favorite flavor to celebrate National Ice Cream Day.

But, but…

My younger person isn’t even here right now. He’s over at a friend’s.

I’m here. Don’t you think you should make the favorite flavor of the one who stays home and hangs out with you?

I jumped up and down and did everything I could to try to convince my person to make my favorite flavor.

All to no good.

And then you know what she told me?

Bongo with his nose up to the ice cream dish

Dogs aren’t allowed to eat chocolate.
