Purple Droppings

Bongo sniffing plums on the groundThis is really strange.

It’s happening in the very same spot.

But the color has changed.

This might take some investigation.

I haven’t even made it to my trails yet. I’m just a few feet from my front door.

I’m going to run back home for my Detective Dog hat.

.

Detective Dog

Awhile back, way last May I think it was, I was walking to my trails and I hadn’t even made it yet when I found all these strange green things all over the ground.

I was lucky I wasn’t hit by any of them as they fell. But there they were. All over the place.

I never did solve that mystery to my satisfaction (I know, dogs like me shouldn’t be using such big words but I’ve been blogging for a long time now and it seems to be affecting my brain.). I’m still working on that investigation.

So now, I’m walking by that very same spot where I found all those green things so long ago.

And in that very same spot I find purple things all over the ground.

I’m pretty sure a flock of pesky birds dropped those green things. I think they may have been out to get a neighborhood cat – or worse yet, one of my dog buddies who walks by here.

So now I’ve got to figure out what those birds are up to.

Did they drop those purple things too?

Maybe those green things were too small, or too easy to spot.

So those birds found something bigger that blends in better.

At least I don’t think I have to worry about this anymore.

With all the wind we’ve been having I think it shook those birds out of the trees around here.

Good riddance birds.

Take your purple things with you and don’t come back.

Lost People

Lost people on the trailI think it’s pretty hard to get lost on my trails – even when I go outside of my usual rounds, but of course it’s pretty easy to follow the smells.

My person thinks the trails are hard to get lost on too, but she uses a different method to find her way.

She’s taller than me so she can see further. She says there are lots of landmarks to find your way by.

It’s also hard to go very far without running into either houses or something that falls between a very large rock and a very small mountain.

I can’t read them so I have to trust my person when she says those tall poles sticking out of the ground hold signs that point out the trails.

In some places there are even cairns to mark the trails. At least my person says they mark the trails.

I thought they were put there so dogs could leave messages for each other. At least that’s what we use them for.

Even with all these ways to navigate (Person, navigate is too big a word for me.) the trails, my trails can be really tricky for new people. There are little loops that go off and come back to the main trail. Maybe they were put there on purpose so people would go in circles and not be able to find their car again. Then the trail loop car collectors could take their pick of the cars that were left.

Those car collectors probably don’t like my person much though. When she’s asked, she tells those lost people how to get out of the loop.

I think my person’s pretty cool though. Today I got loves from some people she was helping.

Those people were really lost. They were trying to find a place called Wisconsin.

Walking’s not an Option

Bongo looking at the viewLately I’ve been wanting to go on a different trail – it’s a little longer than the way we usually go on my trails.

But my person always says she’s too busy, or it’s too hot, or she comes up with any number of excuses.

Today it was cloudy and cooler, and my person didn’t have bunches of stuff to do, so we got to go on that trail.

We were having a great time – until I heard it.

Thunder!

Over there – and that way too!

We were surrounded!

Person, why did you want to go on this trail? We could have been almost home by now.

There was only one direction to go – and my person wouldn’t let me go that way.

Okay, fine. Then we’re not going at all.

Bongo holding his ground

Bongo refusing to move

It became a game of tug of war.

Until my collar came off.

Then my person did something really strange.

She walked to the end of my her leash, sat on the ground, and started taking pictures of me.

Bongo reluctantly walking

I like the sound her camera makes. Eventually I walked to where she sat.

Then she moved back to the end of her leash, and made me walk to her again.

Then she did it all over again.

My person thinks I’m afraid of this thunder, but I’ve been thinking. Sometimes I complain too much when she stops all the time to take pictures. I think I’ll be nice to her today and let her take all the pictures she wants.

And just to prove I was doing it to be nice to her, when we got past the part with all the best scenery, I started walking with her again.

Strange New Plants

Bongo sniffing a pink thing in the groundIt’s been hot here, and very dry until the last few days.

The wildflowers we had in the spring are gone. We’ll probably have a few more in the fall, but for now things are looking pretty bleak.

At least I thought they were bleak.

But there have been some really strange things showing up on my trails lately.

Like the pink flower in my trail’s parking lot.

I’ve never seen anything like it before.

It almost looks like a miniature firework that burst on the ground and never made it into the air.

I wonder what kind of flower this is – or if I’ll see any more of them.

I might have to get my person to search it out on the internet. Sometimes she finds the names of plants on my trails there.

This pink flower isn’t the only strange plant I’ve found on my trails lately.

Some plants must really like the heat of summer.

I haven’t figured out though if this other thing is a flower or a fruit.

I found it growing on a bush, right next to the trail.

Native American looking thing in a bush

I wonder what kind of bush the internet would say this is.

Puddle Invasion

Bongo near a small puddleA few days ago I was walking on my trails minding my own business when I saw something that surprised me.

My puddle had come back!

Well, half my puddle anyway. But my puddle has been missing for months and months.

I don’t know where it disappears to, but it does that a lot.

It just gets up and leaves. And then it shows up again when it feels like it.

***

So the next day I was really curious.

Would my puddle still be there, or not?

I found the strangest thing when I got to the puddle spot.

My puddle was still there…

tadpoles in the puddle

but it had been invaded.

Dozens of tiny tadpoles filled my puddle.

Swimming, wriggling, and darting all over the place.

I tried to stomp them out…

Bongo's foot in the water with the tadpoles

but there were far too many of them.

They filled every little bit of my puddle.

***

I went back the next day not knowing what to expect.

And you know what I found?

Bongo and a dried up puddle

No puddle, no tadpoles, nothing.

My puddle had fled and taken the tadpoles with it.

I thought I might find one or two tadpoles wriggling around in the dirt, but there were none.

***

Then today when I went back I found the puddle again. Even bigger than before.

Bongo in a puddle

But the tadpoles were nowhere in sight.

I have enough trouble trying to figure out where my puddle goes when it leaves…

But where in the world would a puddle take tadpoles?

Changing the Time

Bongo behind a bunch of bushesMy person finally figured it out. If we go on our trail walk in the morning there’s no thunder.

And it’s quiet – and peaceful.

This morning there was no wind to blow the smells away. I had a great time exploring and finding new smells.

Of course my person – like usual – kept dragging me away from all the good smells.

And then my person – like usual – wouldn’t go on a longer walk.

The same old routine.

Well, I guess it wasn’t really. We went at a different time of day.

Usually this time of year we go in the evening – when the sun is getting low.

But the thunder has been rumbling then too.

Hey person, I don’t need this thunder thing on anymore.

I’m brave now. See, there’s nothing here to scare me.

You need to get up early every morning for our walks.

That way you can get your exercise.

Wait! What do you mean, you want your exercise now?

I’ll just be a few more minutes here.

Bongo sniffing behind bushes

What do you think walks are for anyway?

Change of Plans

Bongo pulling against his leashI don’t know what my person is thinking. She keeps wanting to go for walks on my trails, and for the last few days I’ve been telling her it’s not safe there.

There’s thunder out there.

I guess my person doesn’t understand the danger of thunder.

Which is why she needs me to keep her safe.

So when she kept insisting we should go on my trails I really had to put my feet down.

.

Bongo pulling hard against his leash

Finally I got through to her.

I took her for a walk around the block instead.

I got to meet some dogs that I don’t usually see on my trails.

Well, they barked at me through their fence anyway.

I riled up Kaiser and Lica and they barked at me from inside their house. And while my person stopped to talk to their person their cat was sneaking peeks at me from the yard.

What? Wait a minute! I didn’t see that cat.

You mean I missed a perfectly good opportunity to chase a cat.

I’d better take my person on more walks around the block.

I had a great time walking around the block today, but I don’t think my person liked it so much.

Bongo in front of a Foreclosure sign

Because she put me up for foreclosure.

What’s foreclosure?

Is that related to golf?

Golf balls aren’t much fun to play with.

Tennis balls are better.

And they have love in tennis.

Could you change that sign, person?

Tennis balls and loves. Woo woo! What a combination!

Let’s go around the block again – as soon as that new sign goes up.

Texting on the Trail

A cell phone and Bongo looking boredDo you see something wrong with this picture? Cause I sure do.

It’s hot out today. Really hot.

So what does my person do?

She dilly dallies on our walk because she’s texting.

Come on, person. I like my walks, but when it’s this hot out I just want to travel the trails and get back home where it’s cool inside.

But my person was really bad today because when she wasn’t texting she was taking pictures of really dumb things.

Fuzzy Caterpillar

Like caterpillars.

I don’t know what this caterpillar is doing in the middle of my trails anyway. Maybe turning itself into a tasty treat.

I’ve never tried fried caterpillars before.

That caterpillar didn’t look done yet, so my person found even more dumb things to take pictures of.

Red Berries

Berries.

And I don’t think these berries are good for eating – even if they are cooked.

And by this time I’m just dragging.

I’m dying of thirst.

I think I’m going to drop any second now.

Bongo looking too hot

Did I do it?

Did I make you feel sorry enough for me?

I hope so, because somebody’s got to call the animal abuse people and turn my person in.

And while I’m waiting for those animal abuse people to show up I think I’ll go home to my air conditioned house and get a nice cool drink of water.

You can tell those people to look for me and my person there.

I’ll be home in about a minute.

The Bone is Back

Bongo found his bone from yesterdayHey person, you know that bone I found? The one you made me drop yesterday?

Well it’s still here.

This is one stroke of luck.

.

.

.

.

Bongo picking up his bone

I think I’d better bury this thing again before somebody else finds it.

Bongo digging a hole

Okay bone. You’ll be safe in here.

Bongo about to bury the bone in the hole

This is really hard work covering up this bone.

I wish I had a shovel so I didn’t have to use my nose.

Bongo covering the bone up

Person, what do you mean we have to go now?

I worked really hard to bury that bone. I’ve got to dig it up now and make sure it’s safe.

I don’t want to go yet. I’m not done digging.

You’re going to make all that work I did go to waste.

I bet there’s nobody that works harder than I just did, and you’re going to turn it into a waste.

Ant dragging a large tuft of hair

What’s that ant doing carrying that tail around with him?

Working harder than me?

No way.

I carry my tail around with me all the time. It’s no work at all.

Bury the Bone

Bongo burying a boneA couple days ago I found a bone on my trails.

And my person said, “Drop it.”

So today when I found that bone again I decided to bury it.

I dug a hole under a tree…

.

.

.

Bongo putting the bone in the ground

and I dropped it in.

Then I buried it.

I don’t have a shovel…

Bongo covering the bone with his nose

so I buried it with my nose.

It was hard work, but I got that bone covered up.

Bongo checking to see if the bone is still there

But now I can’t see that bone anymore. And I can’t smell it as well, either.

I’d better dig it up and make sure it’s still there.

Bongo found the bone still in the hole

Yup, it’s here.

Guess I’d better take it and put it in a safe place.

Bongo with the bone in his mouth

What? Drop it?

What do you mean, drop it?

Bongo looking at the bone on the ground

I worked hard for this bone, person.

I dropped it, but I’m holding you responsible if anything happens to it.
