The Next Challenge

Bongo in his kennel with the door openIf you’ve been reading my blog over the past couple weeks or so you probably know that my person recently got me a dog jail.

I tried to put Scratchy in it and turn it into a cat jail, but for some reason that didn’t work.

And I keep getting locked in that dog jail every time my person leaves the house.

Don’t tell my person, but I have to admit something.

I’m kind of starting to like that dog jail.

And here’s why.

I’m getting a lot of extra treats because of it.

Every time my person wants me to go in there she puts treats inside.

I hope she never finds out that I’ll go in there without the treats, because treats are what I live for.

And I can sleep in that dog jail just as well as I can sleep on the carpet.

But there is one problem with it.

While I’m locked in dog jail I can’t steal the cat food.

So I’m having to take some bigger chances.

It’s easier when my person isn’t in the house, but now the farthest away she’ll be without seeing me is another room.

Next time I think I’d better wait until she’s farther away than the next room.

You had your camera in your hand already?

Person, you can’t put these pictures on my blog. There’s dirty dishes on your counter.

Bongo on the counter stealing the cat food

As long as my person is going to embarrass herself with these pictures, I might as well finish the job.

Bongo eating all the cat food

At least if I get in trouble now it was worth it.

What Good is Busy?

Bongo and Julie playing on the trailBusy, busy, busy.

Most of the time I don’t like that word – especially when my person says it.

When she says that word she usually leaves the house and leaves me home alone. Well, with Scratchy but he doesn’t count.

If she does stay home with that word she ignores me and won’t play.

And today she said it was one of those busy days.

Yuck!

Two meetings and a wedding and a class. She could have taken me along, but no she didn’t.

But today something good came out of busy.

This time of year we rarely go for walks in the morning – we usually wait until later in the afternoon.

But all of my person’s busies were later in the day so I had to take her for a walk in the morning.

We haven’t been on a morning walk since it was hot last summer, but someone I know goes on morning walks – and I haven’t seen her since last summer.

But I saw her today.

My girlfriend Julie!

And something else happened too.

My person has never unhooked my leash while we’re on my trails.

But she did today.

I guess she didn’t want me and Julie to tangle her up.

Sand Pile

Bongo near a sand pileCheck this out. Someone made me a sand pile.

I really don’t know what to do with it though.

Cats like sand piles. Maybe I should take it home to Scratchy.

Maybe he’d bury his claws in this sand and I’d never see them again.

Come on, person. Help me pick up this sand pile. We’ve got to take it home for Scratchy.

.

What do you mean, you won’t help me with it?

Well in that case…

Bongo's shadow over the sand pile

Maybe I can cover up this sand pile with my shadow.

I wouldn’t want any other cats finding it and stealing it.

But maybe I should figure out who made this sand pile in the first place.

Bongo sniffing near the sand pile

Hmm. Not much here.

There’s nothing that’s even worth smelling.

Bongo sniffing sand not near the sand pile

Yup, this smells better over here.

I think I’ll just check stuff out over here for awhile. Maybe a cat will show up and make that sand pile smell better.

Hey person, do you think we could go get Scratchy and bring him out to the sand pile?

Scratchy’s What For

Bongo in kennel with the door openYesterday was too embarrassing. Scratchy was harassing me while I was locked in dog jail and I couldn’t get out.

Well today is a bit different because the door is open.

You’d better be running Scratchy because here I come.

.

.

.

I don’t believe it!

Scratchy is sitting there waiting for me.

Scratchy on the arm of a futon

I’m giving you what for for sure Scratchy.

***

Don’t think you’re safe on that counter. You know I can reach your food when it’s up there.

I’m on you now.

Bongo's paws on counter - Scratchy on top

Just a minute.

Don’t move Scratchy.

Before I give you what for I’ve got to pose for the camera.

Cat Mischief

Scratchy looking at Bongo in his kennelThis is Scratchy here.

Bongo won’t be on his blog for awhile. He’s simply not available.

I’m giving him payback for locking me in that dog cage – so now he’s in it.

I think I like this. It makes me feel really powerful.

I have the ability to keep Bongo locked up – or not.

And I don’t have to worry about my food being eaten when I’m not looking.

Or my litter box being invaded.

Or being chased around the house when Bongo thinks he wants to play.

No, this is really nice.

I think I’ll keep him in this cage for a long, long time.

If he gets thirsty I’ll put a little water on my paw and splash it on him.

And if he gets hungry – well, never mind. Bongo’s food doesn’t taste half bad. I think I’ll eat it all myself.

Bongo, you can just stay in dog jail for awhile. You deserve it.

I think I’ll  wander off and clean myself somewhere. Have fun Bongo.

Bongo looking at Scratchy from inside his kennel

Bongo:  Scratchy, when I get out of here I’m giving you what for for sure.

Scratchy: You won’t be out of there for a long time Bongo.

Oops, here comes our person. I’ll be hiding under the bed.

Cat in a Cage

Bongo next to the dog crate - Scratchy insideI’ve been totally upset since I found out there was a dog jail in my big package.

But I’ve been thinking about it, and I think I came to a wrong conclusion.

My person was mistaken when she said the package was for me.

It wasn’t for me at all.

It’s not even a dog jail.

It’s a cat cage.

I decided to test my theory out, so I got some cat treats, carefully placed them inside the cage, and lured Scratchy in.

Then I shut the door.

Scratchy in the dog crate

Yup, it’s a cat cage alright.

This is really fun.

Making fun of Scratchy in the cage, I mean.

I was having a great time watching Scratchy in the cage when my person heard something – I’m not sure what – and showed up in the room with us.

Bongo looking guilty - Scratchy in cage

Person, I was only trying to do you a favor.

It’s Halloween.

Aren’t you supposed to lock all the black cats up for safety?

National Cat Day

Scratchy on the back of a futonThis is terrible! Just terrible!

Yesterday I told you about the big and little packages I got.

But my person wouldn’t let me open them yet.

I’m dying to know what’s in them, and she still won’t let me open them.

.

Here’s why.

Today is National Cat Day. Do you believe it?

Maybe I could understand if it was National Dog Day, but it isn’t.

And – listen to this – it gets even worse.

My person said I have to give my blog to Scratchy for the rest of the day.

Scratchy on the back of the couch

This is Scratchy here.

I really don’t have much to say, but I know it’s really irritating Bongo that I’m on his blog.

So I’m going to stay here as long as I can.

He thinks he’s got something so special in those packages of his.

I bet there’s nothing that great in them. Probably a large lump of coal or something.

At least that’s what Bongo deserves.

Anyway, I think he’s just jealous because I’ve gotten all slim and trim so now I get to eat canned food.

And Bongo just gets to eat his boring old dry stuff.

That box better not be full of canned dog food.

Bongo by a large box

Did I hear dog food?

If I hang out long enough by this box my person will have to let me open it.

Don’t Get Caught

Bongo on the CouchWhat do you mean, I need to hear this Bible story and it’s going to teach me a lesson?

I don’t need any lessons. I already know everything I need to know.

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

Jesus said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?”

***

Oh, now I get it. You’re planning to put me in charge of Scratchy’s food allowance.

I’m listening with all ears now.

***

Jesus continued, “It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.”

***

This is a trick, isn’t it? To get me not to eat Scratchy’s food. If I actually give Scratchy his food, then I’ll get put in charge of everything. And I can eat all your food and my food too.

This is getting good.

***

Jesus said, “But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.”

***

Wait a minute. What are you saying?

You mean that if I get into mischief because I think you’re not coming home for awhile I might get into trouble?

You know Scratchy does all that stuff, don’t you?

Oh. You’re saying it’s like the times you came in when I wasn’t expecting you and you caught me sleeping on the couch.

Okay, I admit I slept on the couch once or twice.

But Scratchy still did all the rest of the stuff.

Maybe you could send Jesus to give Scratchy what for.

Third Week of People Mischief

Bongo sitting in front of a futonThis is the third week in a row that my people have pulled mischief on me.

I am so miserable. It can be really awful having mischief making people.

They both left the house on foot – and they didn’t take me.

Do you believe it? On foot, and they didn’t take me.

My person said I’d been on two walks the day before, so it wouldn’t hurt me to miss my walk.

So now what I want to know is who told her? My walks with my neighbor dog Toby when she leaves me all day are supposed to be a secret.

I pointed out that it is National Walk Your Dog Week and my person said I could have walks the rest of the week.

She said they were going into coyote territory and they didn’t want me trying to give any of those coyotes what for.

Well, they didn’t see or hear a coyote, but they did get attacked.

By cactus pricklers ,thorny bushes, and loose rocks. My person came home full of scratches.

They should have taken me. I would have protected them.

But it’s all about that camera still. At least my person showed me where they went.

Coffee Pot Rock and an ocotillo

Mogollon Rim

Tree near a cave entrance

View of Sedona from Keyhole Cave entrance

Next week there’s going to be some new mischief.

That camera will be missing when I’m through.

But I won’t get into trouble for anything because Scratchy pulls all the mischief around here.

Now if I could only convince my people…

National Walk Your Dog Week

Bongo walking in a dry washWe’re right in the middle of it – and it’s one of the best weeks there is.

It means I get to go out for walks every day.

Wait a minute. I go out for walks almost every day anyway.

So what’s so special about this week?

I guess I’d better tell you what week it is.

It’s National Walk Your Dog Week.

And I’ve got to tell all you dogs out there that if you’re not taking your people for walks all the time you’re missing out on a lot of adventures.

Bongo walking out of his puddle

My person says it’s good exercise for her and for me. I guess that’s okay.

But what’s more important are the messages I find on my trails from my trail dog buddies.

Bongo sniffing a bush with little yellow flowers

And the dogs and people I get to meet and greet.

Bongo and Layla rubbing heads

By the way, I think I got a new girlfriend today. She was really cute and she wouldn’t leave me alone. Woo woo! More benefits of going out for walks.

If I didn’t go out for walks all the time my life would be boring.

I wouldn’t have adventures to tell you about.

So if I didn’t go for walks and have adventures you’d probably fall asleep when you read my blog.

It would be that boring.

It would probably be like reading a blog that Scratchy wrote.

Scratchy on the Couch

Come to think of it, maybe I should start a National Walk Your Cat Week. Scratchy might have something interesting to say then.

Oh wait, never mind. He’d probably try to steal my blog.
