I Didn’t Walk in the Rain

Red leash on a towelPerson, I have no idea how this towel got out here under my leash because I wasn’t out getting wet in the rain.

No, I was a good dog. I spent all day while you were gone hanging out in my dog jail. You’re the one who let me out. You know I was in there.

By the way, that wasn’t very nice of you to send that nasty thunderstorm last night when I was stuck in my dog jail. I wanted to try to escape it. I couldn’t go anywhere.

I am not changing the subject. I was here all the time.

.

Can we go for a walk now?

I don’t care if it’s raining.

Toby wouldn’t let me go far enough to check on my puddle – I mean, I want to see how my puddle is doing. I haven’t seen it all day.

There’s some pretty cool waterfalls on my trails right now – I mean, I bet there’s some waterfalls right now with the rain and all.

What!!?

What do you mean, you saw a text message between me and Toby on your cell phone?

What do you mean you know I went out in the rain and got all wet?

You have no business checking my text messages.

I don’t care if it was on your phone. You’d better get me my own phone.

Well, can we go for a walk anyway? You need your exercise, person.

Bongo drinking from a small waterfall

See, I told you there were waterfalls on my trails right now.

Bongo in a large mud puddle

Look what happened to my puddle!

It turned into a mud puddle.

Bongo checking out suds in the water

At least my puddle left some suds nearby. After I get all muddy I can wash myself off.

Day Two – No Blue

Bongo on the trail on a gray dayThis is the second day in a row with gray skies. That’s got to be some kind of record for here.

I really don’t mind the weather.

It’s not windy, and not too cold.

Actually a really good day for a walk on my trails.

The only problem is that nobody else seems to think so.

I didn’t meet a single person or dog on my walk today.

.

And without other people or dogs it’s kind of hard to have adventures sometimes.

So I had to look for something else adventurous.

I didn’t find much.

Purple berries against a gray sky

Some berries enjoying the gray day.

Mushroom with a face

And a mushroom with a face.

Well, I thought I saw a face on it, but my person had to enhance (is that an adventurous word – enhance?) the eyes so that you could see them too.

So much for adventures today.

Guess I’ll go take a nap.

What Happened to the Sky?

Bongo on the trail on a cloudy dayI know this isn’t so strange for most of my blogging buddies this time of year, but for me it is.

What happened to the sky?

I’ve been looking at blue sky almost every day, but today it’s gone.

Where’d all that gray come from?

And it’s soggy too. It’s a good thing I’m a water dog.

I’ll take water in any way, shape, or form – soggy or not.

But I don’t know what to do with my person.

She’ll look for any excuses to get her camera out and she found some today.

.

Bongo eating weeds near agave and manzanita plants

Go ahead person. Keep taking pictures here.

I found some good weeds to munch on.

Agave plant surrounded by a manzanita bush

I finished those weeds and had to drag my person on.

That worked until she found a lost little mushroom that had popped up out of the soil.

Small dimpled mushroom

It looks like that poor mushroom got dimples from shivering so much. All the other mushrooms hung out when it was warmer.

I finally convinced my person that that mushroom was fine all by itself, but when I stopped in one of my favorite sniffing spots she found something else.

Fungus on a branch

I’m not sure I want to hang around these things for very long.

Fungus that looks like it has nasty teeth

Some of them have some pretty mean looking teeth.

Let’s get outta here!

Missing the Smell

Bongo climbing out of a dry washMy person and I headed out of the wash and back onto one of my regular trails.

But before we could get on the trail our path was blocked.

Three mountain bikers rolled on by.

They couldn’t see us as they approached because we were hidden behind a tree. But as they rolled on past, only a few feet away, not one of them looked and noticed that we were there.

Imagine being so close to a dog and a person and not knowing it.

People are so unaware sometimes.

I’d never miss a biker. If I didn’t see or hear the biker I would smell him.

But what if nobody smelled?

Not only would the world be a far less interesting place, but if someone was quiet enough they might be able to sneak up on you.

Or we might pass people and dogs all the time and not even know about it.

We might be lost in our own little worlds and lose out on all the greetings, and conversations (barking, I mean), and playful times.

That might make the world a lonely place to be.

It would be terrible!

Wait. If people can’t smell things very well, I bet they miss out on who’s near them all the time.

Something needs to be done about this.

There must be some kind of nose surgery to help people smell things better.

And I hope that surgery clears a few more things up for them.

For some reason people have the strangest sense about what smells good.

Poetry is Necessary

Bongo checking out a parked bikeI headed to my trails and found a bike parked there. This doesn’t happen very often.

Most of the bikes that come to my trails go on my trails.

But this bike is different – in more ways than one.

I see lots of people put stickers on their cars, but I don’t usually see them on bikes.

Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on a bike on my trails before.

But this bike must be special.

It’s a poetry bike.

"Poetry is Necessary" sticker on bike

This bike says poetry is necessary.

Does that mean I have to write poetry?

Is it as necessary as eating, or sleeping, or going on walks on my trails?

Okay, I guess I’ll write a poem.

.

Bikes that write poetry

Are found to be rare

But a dog that writes poems

Can be worse than a bear

.

Wait a minute! What happened there?

Those words just came out. They’re not what I wanted to say.

That poetry writing took right over and started writing its own words.

Maybe I shouldn’t be writing poetry.

But I can’t stop yet. I’ve got to get that bear first.

 .

I chased a bear

He’s no longer there

He ran over the hill

And I’m not sure to where

.

Take that you mean old bear.

And don’t come back either.

Treat on the Trail

Bongo finding an apple on the trailThis is the best day ever!

I never find treats on my trails – well, except for weeds, that is.

But today I found an apple. I like apples.

So I hurried over to see what this was all about.

Why was an apple sitting on my trails – right in broad daylight for me to eat?

I guess I really don’t need to solve this mystery – I just need to eat it.

So I thought I would savor the moment, taking in all the juicy good smells of this apple.

Bongo smelling an apple on the ground

Mmmm, this smells good! I think I even sense a trace of little kid smell on here. I wonder how that smell got on this apple.

I guess it doesn’t matter. It’s time to chomp away.

Wait! What?

What are you doing person?

You can’t drag me away!

I’m just getting ready to eat this apple.

Bongo beingdragged from the apple by his leash

Person, you don’t understand?

Don’t you get it? This isn’t one of the normal smells on my trails.

Can’t you see that apple?

Person! Hey person!

Noooooooooo!

A Sad Story

Bongo sniffing something on the trailHmmm.

Something’s here that doesn’t belong on my trails.

At least not this time of year.

It smells funny too. Not your usual trail scent.

And it’s colorful.

.

.

.

.

.

What's hiding in Bongo's shadow?

There’s not usually much color on my trails this time of year except for the red rocks and the blue skies.

I wonder how this strange stuff got here.

Colors are usually cheery, but this stuff seems to have a sad story behind it.

Maybe a cute girl was sniffing the funny smell and the wind came up and blew these things out of her hands.

Or maybe a boy was bringing these to a cute girl, but she’d gone too far on my trails and he couldn’t find her.

Or maybe these were meant to remember someone.

Oh wait – this is Sedona after all. Someone was probably using these to put an enchantment on my trails.

It’s a good thing I found them then.

Discarded flowers on the ground

No enchantments for my trails.

Unless it’s to enchant all the cute girls to come and give me loves.

What Good is Busy?

Bongo and Julie playing on the trailBusy, busy, busy.

Most of the time I don’t like that word – especially when my person says it.

When she says that word she usually leaves the house and leaves me home alone. Well, with Scratchy but he doesn’t count.

If she does stay home with that word she ignores me and won’t play.

And today she said it was one of those busy days.

Yuck!

Two meetings and a wedding and a class. She could have taken me along, but no she didn’t.

But today something good came out of busy.

This time of year we rarely go for walks in the morning – we usually wait until later in the afternoon.

But all of my person’s busies were later in the day so I had to take her for a walk in the morning.

We haven’t been on a morning walk since it was hot last summer, but someone I know goes on morning walks – and I haven’t seen her since last summer.

But I saw her today.

My girlfriend Julie!

And something else happened too.

My person has never unhooked my leash while we’re on my trails.

But she did today.

I guess she didn’t want me and Julie to tangle her up.

Sand Pile

Bongo near a sand pileCheck this out. Someone made me a sand pile.

I really don’t know what to do with it though.

Cats like sand piles. Maybe I should take it home to Scratchy.

Maybe he’d bury his claws in this sand and I’d never see them again.

Come on, person. Help me pick up this sand pile. We’ve got to take it home for Scratchy.

.

What do you mean, you won’t help me with it?

Well in that case…

Bongo's shadow over the sand pile

Maybe I can cover up this sand pile with my shadow.

I wouldn’t want any other cats finding it and stealing it.

But maybe I should figure out who made this sand pile in the first place.

Bongo sniffing near the sand pile

Hmm. Not much here.

There’s nothing that’s even worth smelling.

Bongo sniffing sand not near the sand pile

Yup, this smells better over here.

I think I’ll just check stuff out over here for awhile. Maybe a cat will show up and make that sand pile smell better.

Hey person, do you think we could go get Scratchy and bring him out to the sand pile?

What Color are my Berries?

Juniper berriesThe berries on the juniper trees at my house are blue – well, this year they’re more like a chalky white.

And there are blue chalky white berries on some of the trees on my trails too.

But the berries on some of the trees on my trails are different.

I’ve been trying to figure it out.

.

.

Bongo sniffing the ground under a juniper tree

It must be something in the soil.

It doesn’t smell any different.

Maybe the dirt here is redder than the dirt at my house.

Juniper tree with pink berries

Yup, it looks really red around here.

Well, I thought I figured it out, but I still don’t think it makes sense.

Red, pink – they’re not the same, are they?

Maybe somebody can help me make sense out of this.

Or maybe I need to go home and get my Detective Dog hat.

Detective Dog

I just hope somebody doesn’t pick all those berries before I figure this out, or I might really be up a creek.

Did I just say creek? Maybe I should just go swimming.

Woo woo! Last one in is a rotten e…

Wait a minute! There’s no creek here, and I’ve still got a mystery to solve.

Pink juniper berries

Yup, they’re pink alright.

So now I guess what I’ve got to figure out is –

Who took the time to paint all those berries?
