Back Yard Neighbor

Bongo jumping on the fenceI have a new neighbor dog who lives behind me – on the other side of my backyard fence. This dog isn’t calm and gentle like Toby, my new across the street neighbor dog. This dog likes to bark. But only when I come out in my backyard.

If he’s out in his yard when I come out he makes such a ruckus that I’ve got to see what’s going on. What’s he getting so excited about?

I can’t jump the fence to get over to him. At least not the fence that goes to his yard. I can only jump the part where the gate is.

Bongo facing the fence with his ears and tail out

There’s got to be another way to get over there.

Bongo peeking down over the short fence

Maybe there’s a way to go under that fence.

Bongo looking at the fence

Or maybe through it?

Bongo looking through a hole in the fence

Oh wait. Here’s a hole in the fence. At least now I can get a look at that dog.

Bongo running along the fence

I don’t believe it. Just when I almost get face to face with that dog he runs down to the other side of the yard.

Next time I’m barking back.

Top Reads and Writes

BongoThis is terrible – really terrible! You see, my person was going over the annual report for my blog and not one of the top five posts was about me. Well, I guess one of them was – the last one.

The top post was one I wrote way back in October of 2011 – Adventures of a Dead Mouse. It wasn’t even about a dog. And the mouse wasn’t even alive. And all because my person wouldn’t take a picture of the mouse. So I made her draw one for my blog post. You wouldn’t believe how many people found this blog post through searches for a dead mouse.

My person noticed that a lot of people were also finding my blog with the search “Bongo Cat” and they were finding pictures of Scratchy – the cat I live with. So she made me write a post called Bongo Cat. And it became the second most popular post for 2012. Do you believe it? A mouse and a cat beat me.

When my person noticed all the searches that were finding the dead mouse drawing I started a Dead Mouse Fan Club. And that became the third most popular post for 2012. I’ve been beaten out by a cat and twice by a mouse.

Then my person seemed to be confusing me with a wolf and she drew a picture of a wolf howling. And Howling Like a Wolf became my fourth most popular post. At least a wolf is related to me. I don’t feel quite so bad about that one.

At least the fifth most popular post is about me. It’s the poem I wrote for my Gotcha Day. So I think I learned something from this. If I want lots of people to read posts about me I have to write more poetry, celebrate my Gotcha Day every day, or get my person to start drawing pictures of me.

But here’s what I really wanted to tell you about. There are some special people and dogs who read my blog and comment regularly. So I want to let you know which of my friends gave me the most comments in 2012, because all of them are really awesome.

There was a tie for first place: Marina is a wonderful artist who also loves dogs, and Kevin is a Shiba-Inu who lives in Japan.

Third place goes to Angels Whisper and I have to admit I’m kind of partial to her cat Little Binky. I think Little Binky is probably nicer than Scratchy.

Fourth place goes to all my collie friends at Collies of the Meadow. One of the collies, Ginger, gives me all kinds of great mischief ideas.

And number five goes to my buddy Jet. His mom’s been busy like my person has, so that was a lot of comments he gave me awhile back. I’ve been missing him lately, but I understand.

I’ve got a special treat for all of my top five commenters. The first one is for the people who commented. I would like to share these treats with my dog friends too, but my person says we’re not allowed to eat chocolate.

So I added some dog treats. Make sure your people don’t eat any of these. They get the cookies.

I know there’s a few cats involved too. I had to ask Scratchy what cats would like. He said a mouse. I was going to refer all the cats to that dead mouse, but Scratchy donated one of his.

I want to thank everybody that has been reading my blog and leaving me comments. You are all special to me and when my person gives me some more treats I’ll share them with you too.

Happy Festival of Sleep Day

Bongo SleepingToday is Festival of Sleep Day. This day happens January 3rd every year and it’s creating quite a dilemma for me.

I want to make sure I do it right, and that means I have to find just the right place to sleep.

.

.

.

Bongo on the bed

The most obvious place would be my person’s bed. But for some reason unknown to me I get kicked off her bed anytime she finds me there. I guess I won’t get much sleep on the bed today.

Bongo on the Couch

The couch would be another great place to sleep, but it seems to have the same problem as the bed. I know some of my friends are allowed on couches. I’d appreciate any helpful hints on how you convinced your people to let you do this.

Living Room Sleeping

I could sleep in the living room – right in the middle of everything, so my people will have to walk around me all the time.

Bongo and Scratchy on the floor

But then Scratchy might come and hang out next to me.

Summer Sleeping Spot

The bathroom is a nice, out of the way place. No one bothers me in there – well, not very often that is. And the tiles are nice and cool. They feel good when it’s hot. Oh, wait. This is January. Cool tiles are not good now..

Bongo in the sunny spot with Scratchy behind him

That settles it. I’m sleeping in the sunny spot.

Fans on my Trails

Bongo sniffing in a snow patchToday was on the nippy side with a little bit of a breeze. It felt kind of like a fan blowing on me. A chilly fan. At least it wasn’t cold and windy with snow blowing in my face like it was a few days ago.

A few patches of snow still hung out around my trails and they had some very unusual scents in them. I had to stick my nose into all the indents in the snow. It was fun – until my person told me I’d smelled enough and made me leave.

.

Bongo stepping lightly in the puddle

I checked out my puddle too. It always seems to come around when there’s snow on the ground. My puddle felt very cold and it smelled a lot like those snow patches. I wished I’d had a blanket with me for my puddle. It could have used some warming up.

But here’s the best part. As we were walking along my trails we met two people. That’s not so unusual – we meet people on my trails all the time – but my person seemed to know these people. I’m still trying to figure out how my person knows all these people that I’ve never met, but she does.

But here’s the even stranger part. One of those people that I’ve never met before knew who I was, and she even knew my name.

And she gave me loves…

Bongo giving his new friend kisses

lots of loves.

She’s one of my fans who reads my blog.

I kind of like this meeting my fans thing – so I’d like the rest of my fans out there to please go for walks on my trails. And make sure you’re out there the same time I am. You can check with my secretary person for my schedule.

No person, I’m not letting this fan thing go to my head.

What do you mean I still have to pick up my own toys and make my dog bed?

Gopher Golf

Little Yellow FlagThis is new. I’ve never seen a flag on my trails before.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Bongo next to a flag with the number 32 on it

Look, the flag even has a number on it. I wonder what it’s here for.

Bongo and a flag that has a 31 on it

Hey, I found another flag. This one has a number too.

We need to figure out why those flags are here. Maybe I should put on my Detective Dog hat again?

Oh wait, I think I’ve figured it out already.

Bongo sniffing a gopher mound

Look at this mound here. Right near those flags. You know who makes these mounds, don’t you?

Gophers!

And I bet those gophers are up to something. I bet they’re up to a good round of gopher golf.

All I have to do is follow those flags and I bet we’ll find the gophers. And the gopher golf balls.

Come on, person. Let’s go look for those gophers.

I know we’re almost at the end of our walk, but we’ve got to go back and look. Maybe they’ll let us in on the game. I’d like to swing at a few gophers.

***

Hmmm. I don’t see any gophers anywhere. Or any more flags, either.

Oh. Now I know why I’m not seeing any gophers.

Those gophers took their flags and their little golf balls and clubs…

Bongo checking out a gopher hole

and ran them down this hole.

Guess I’ll have to swing at a gopher another day.

The Scarlet Cord

Rahab and the Emissaries of Joshua

Rahab and the Emissaries of Joshua (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.             Joshua 1:9

Hey person, I just got here and there are words already on my blog. I wanted you to tell me a story about Joshua. You know, the guy who took over after Moses died.

Really? God said those words to Joshua when He told him to go take the Promised Land?

Do you think God would say those words to me the next time there’s thunder?

I would too listen to God.

I do too listen to you. Okay, I’m listening now.

Joshua sent two spies across the Jordan River to look over the land. He told them to especially look over Jericho. So the spies went to Jericho and stayed at the house of a prostitute named Rahab.

The king of Jericho heard that the men had come and he sent messengers to tell Rahab to bring them out.

Was that king going to give those men special honor? That’s pretty cool – a king wanted to see them.

I am listening.

Rahab hid the men and told the king’s men that they had gone. She sent the king’s men down the road looking for them.

Rahab was pretty sneaky, wasn’t she?

I’ll listen. I promise.

Rahab talked to the men she had hidden and told them that everyone in the land was afraid of their people because of the things God had done for them. She asked them to spare her life and the lives of her family.

The men agreed that if Rahab didn’t tell anyone what they were doing they would treat her kindly and faithfully. Rahab’s house was part of the city wall, so she let the men out of a window by a rope and told them to go into the hills for three days so they wouldn’t be found.

The men had climbed down on a scarlet cord, and they told Rahab that if she tied it in her window and brought her family into her house they would be spared.

Rahab agreed and sent the men on their way. They hid in the hills for three days, then forded the Jordan River and told Joshua everything that had happened to them.

So what happened next? Did Joshua and the Israelites go give those people in Jericho what for?

What? I have to wait to find out what happens next? Maybe I’ll go to Jericho and huff and puff and blow the walls down.

What do you mean I have the wrong story? I am not a big, bad wolf!

The New Raccoon

Bongo meeting a boy with a raccoon hatYesterday was a blustery, snowy kind of day and I didn’t want to be outside at all. But today was a different kind of day. The sun came out and the air was crisp and cool. The perfect day for a walk.

It’s a good thing today was a good walking day because I found an animal that I’ve never seen on my trails before. Today I made friends with a raccoon.

I didn’t know what to expect from a raccoon because I’ve never met one before.

.

The boy with the raccoon hat turning away from Bongo

At first he was kind of shy.

He even tried to run away from me.

Bongo, the boy, and his friends

But the raccoon’s friends tried to help. He didn’t seem to be afraid of them at all, even though they weren’t raccoons.

Finally we became friends. That little raccoon put his fear aside and patted my head.

Bongo and the boy with the raccoon hat playing

He even taught me how to play a game.

I had so much fun with my new friend today. I hope he’s just the first of a whole family of raccoons that I get to meet on my trails.

Make it Stop

Bongo unhappy with the falling snowToday seemed like an ordinary day as my person and I headed out for our walk. Well, it was cloudy and kind of chilly, but I can put up with that. Anything for a walk.

But as soon as we got out to the street I could see it coming. Have you ever watched a storm about ready to attack you? It’s like a big cloud coming toward you –ready to engulf you.

And then it did.

Snow and wind coming right in my face. And it wasn’t that light, fluffy kind of snow. This was that hard little corny kind. I didn’t like it one little bit. I don’t know what my person was thinking. She kept heading up the trail.

Bongo balking while the snow is falling

I had to put my foot down. I came to a halt.

Bongo giving the evil eye

My person still didn’t get it. I gave her the evil eye.

Finally she got the message and we headed toward home. But by then the wind and snow were bad in both directions.

Bongo looking for another route

I started looking around to see if that snow was everywhere. Maybe it was only falling on my trail.

There must be another way.

Bongo not wanting to go

I think my person should have followed me off the trail, but she made me stay on it. And it wasn’t the right way at all. By now those snowflakes were turning into monsters. More like hail if you ask me.

Bongo with snow on his back and a sad look

I finally had to try the sad look. It hasn’t worked before, but there’s got to be a first time. I’m sure my person could stop this storm if she wanted to.

***

I knew it. My person could stop the storm. As soon as we got back in the house that snow stopped coming down.

Now I just have to figure out why my person was picking on me.

Christmas Visitor

Ghost Dog Walking AwayYesterday I was so excited to talk about all the great Christmas presents I got that I forgot one thing. I had one more present that I didn’t mention. It was a visit from a special friend that I haven’t seen in a long time.

And that friends, is no other than Ghost Dog.

I was walking my person along my trails like I always do. Yes, even on Christmas I have to make sure to get my person out for her walk. She might get all cranky if she doesn’t get her exercise.

Anyway, we were walking along my trails when, there he was.

Ghost Dog seemed happy to see me. He started wagging his tail and came over and sniffed noses with me. But then, like he always does, he kept on walking and disappeared.

This time he did something a little different though. As he was walking down the trail Ghost Dog turned and looked back at me, as if he really wanted to stay and play.

Ghost Dog Looking Back

But there must be something about his ghostiness that won’t let him do that. Like a true Ghost Dog he vanishes every time I see him.

Next time I might have to put my Detective Dog hat on and follow him. I bet he won’t be so quick to disappear. Because if he does, I’ll find out where he goes and I’ll get a new hat to wear.

Who you gonna call? Ghost Buster Dog!
