What’s in my Wash?

Bongo next to a dry washWhenever we go out on my trails my person has her camera aimed and ready and she’s always looking for unusual things to take pictures of.

I wish she’d just enjoy the walk – I mean, nobody cares if there are pictures on my blog.

Unless they are pictures of me, of course.

But my person can take pictures of me when we’re at home. She doesn’t need to take her camera on my trails.

But this time my person really found something unusual to take a picture of.

It’s so unusual that I might have to run back home and get my Detective Dog hat to investigate what it might be.

This thing showed up at a spot where flowers often grow in the dry wash on my trails.

Oh yeah, for those of you who were wondering about the dry wash I couldn’t find recently – it showed up again. Funny how those things happen.

At first I thought this strange thing was another flower growing where the other flowers had been.

Morning glory beginning to open

But then when I looked at it closer I realized it wasn’t a flower at all.

I think it’s some kind of toy.

flower shaped like a pinwheel

It’s a pinwheel!

And Then There Was One

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat onI’ve got a real mystery on my hands – or maybe two or three – so on with my Detective Dog hat it is.

I’ve got to get to work.

Here’s what happened.

.

.

.

A couple days ago I went out on my trails and I found seven little lights.

Seven electric tea lights on a post

I’ve never seen lights like these on my trails before.

I guess someone wanted to see in the dark – but why would they leave these lights here during the day?

So I started checking for clues.

Bongo sniffing around the post

No unusual smells here.

Maybe this way.

Bongo next to the post looking the other way

I came up with nothing so I decided to continue on down my trail.

And then I found another one.

Bongo sniffing an electric tea light on the ground

Just sitting on the ground.

This is getting really strange.

I continued on my walk, sniffing as I went, but I didn’t find any more of those lights.

But the next day when I went out on my trails…

Five flicker lights on a post

there were only five lights left.

And one still on the ground.

Now I’ve got a second mystery.

Not only did somebody leave these lights, but somebody is taking them away.

What’s a Detective Dog to do? Two mysteries at the same time.

I continued sniffing and then went back home – exhausted from brain drain over the two mysteries.

I went out again on my trails today, wearing my Detective Dog hat.

And mystery of all mysteries on my trails…

One flicker light on a post

I only found one light left.

I hope I get this mystery solved before all the lights go out.

They’re Back

Bongo in a big puddleI’ve got a real mystery on my hands paws.

.

.

.

.

.

.

I’m going to have to put my Detective Dog hat on for sure.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

There. I feel better already.

Oh yeah. I guess I’d better tell you what this mystery is all about.

About a week ago I told you about my puddle invasion.

My puddle had appeared after missing for weeks, but then I discovered it had been invaded by tadpoles.

Then both the puddle and the tadpoles disappeared, but when the puddle came back it left the tadpoles somewhere else.

For a few days now my puddle has been sticking around – just like usual. No tadpoles – just a puddle.

Last night we had a thunderstorm. It was really horrible, waking up in the middle of the night to all that thunder.

I wish it would leave me alone.

But I think tadpoles must like thunder.

Because today when I went out on my trails, not only had my puddle grown –

but when I stuck my feet into it …

Bongo's paws in a puddle with tadpoles

I felt these tickly things bumping into me.

Tadpoles in a muddy puddle

The tadpoles had returned.

And now it’s up to Detective Dog to figure out what those tadpoles are up to.

And what they intend to do with my puddle.

Fitting the Clues Together

Bongo sniffing branches on the groundWhat is this? What are all these branches doing on the ground? I’d better check this out.

I’ve had so many mysteries on my trails lately. It’s been keeping Detective Dog busy.

Speaking of Detective Dog, I’d better get my hat on.

.

.

.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

There, that’s better. Now I can delve into this mystery.

Wait a minute! There’s a tree right here that’s missing a bunch of branches.

Tree with missing branches

I wonder if – I wonder if…

No, it’s not possible.

Could all of these branches have fallen off of this tree?

No, when I look closer I see that there’s been some hacking going on.

Somebody hacked these branches off this tree.

I wonder who it could be.

Look here! Is this another clue?

This hacked tree is right next to the prickly pear cactus that I found damaged awhile back.

And over there is the other tree that lost its branches.

Damaged trees and damaged prickly pear cactus

I just realized where we are.

Right over there is the place where the Litter Bugs hang out.

Damaged tree in front of a clearing

This will make my job really easy.

All I have to do is find those Litter Bugs.

I bet they’ll be able to tell me who damaged this tree.

Broken Branches

Bongo sniffing around a damaged treeWhat is going on here? There are broken branches all over the ground.

We haven’t had any storms around here lately. None of that nasty thunder and lightning and not even any rain or hail. Maybe some wind, but not enough to knock all these branches down.

I’d better get my Detective Dog hat on and check this out.

.

.

.

.

.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

That’s better. Now I can check for clues.

Bongo sniffing around damaged tree

Wait a minute! Look at that tree that’s surrounded by all these loose branches. Somebody has hacked it all up.

I wonder if somebody else brought all these branches here to try and repair the tree.

If that’s what happened they left before they finished.

Now I have even more mysteries.

What to do? What to do?

Guess I’d better look for more clues.

Bongo sniffing for clues

Hey, I think I just saw a hawk fly by.

Maybe the hawk brought all those branches here and it flew away to look for more.

Or maybe little mice brought the branches and the hawk chased them off.

It would probably take a lot of little mice to carry each one of those branches.

I bet that would look pretty cool – seeing all those little mice work together.

Maybe if I hang out here for awhile the hawk won’t come back and the little mice will get brave and come out again.

I think I’ve solved another mystery.

Oh, wait! I’ve got two mysteries. I know that little mice brought the branches, but who hacked that tree up in the first place.

Maybe the little mice know. I think I’ll just wait here and ask them.

Who Lost a Leash?

Bongo sniffing a leash on a cairnI find strange things on my trails fairly often, but today I found one of the strangest. I found a leash, with nobody attached, just hanging around by itself.

Time to get on my Detective Dog hat and start looking for clues.

.

.

.

.

Detective Dog

Hmmm. I’m picking up some scents, but I’m not sure what it all means.

Bongo sniffing around the found leash

Hey wait a minute. One of the scents on here is mine – from yesterday.

So much for solving this mystery by the smells around here.

What could it all mean?

Somewhere on my trails there is a dog running around without a leash.

And there is also a person on my trails who is not attached to a leash.

This could be really bad.

I’d better go look for that person and that dog. They might be lost from each other.

Maybe I could be a hero and reunite them.

Wait a minute. What’s this?

Bongo sniffing a strap on a branch

Another leash?

What is this, National Lose Your Leash Day?

Maybe I can find some clues around this one.

Strap Clues

Hmmm. I think this might be some kind of conspiracy.

Somebody might be trying to keep Detective Dog busy so they can pull some heist somewhere else.

They’re not going to succeed though, because I found out something that they don’t know.

This second thing isn’t a leash at all.

It’s a strap with clips on it so people can attach their stuff.

So when those people pull that heist, they’re going to discover that their strap is missing.

And they’ll have no way to carry all the stuff they stole.

I’d better go now and find out where they dropped all that stuff.

Maybe they dropped some treats.

Mysterious Object

Century Plant budI found this strange object when I was out on my trails. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I guess I’d better get investigating and figure out what it is.

Time for my Detective Dog hat.

Bongo with Detective Dog hat covering his eyes

This won’t do.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

That’s better.

Maybe it will help if I look at that object in its natural environment.

When I found it, it looked like this.

Century plant bud on the ground

Oh, look at this. These weeds are right near where I found this object.

Bongo checking out weeds

Maybe these will give me some clues.

Bongo turning from the weeds

I am not eating these weeds, person.

I didn’t find anything in here anyway.

What do you mean, look up?

Looking up at a Century Plant

What does that have to do with anything? Can’t you see how high it is?

This little thing I found was way down here.

Century Plant in front of Thunder Mountain

I still don’t know why you’re looking at that.

Bongo and a Century Plant

Well, yeah. It’s kind of the same color.

I’m not getting anywhere with this investigation. Let’s head on down the trail.

I’ll think about this later.

Backyard Mysteries

Bongo looking at the fenceWhen I went out in my backyard last night I was confronted by strange smells, sights, and sounds. All coming from the other side of the fence.

This is the fence that Moe lives on the other side of. Moe likes to bark at me through the fence anytime we’re both outside.

Here’s a picture of Moe – the only time we got to meet without a fence between us.

.

.

Bongo and Moe on the trail

But this wasn’t about Moe this time. Other things were happening in Moe’s yard – and Moe wasn’t even around.

I’ve got a pretty strong sense of smell, but I didn’t even need my special Detective Dog sensory senses. Even my person smelled this one. The smell of smoke emanated (hey person, I don’t even know what that word means) from Moe’s yard.

And then I saw it – right through the cracks in the fence. Bright orange crackling flames – all contained in one little spot.

My person said it looked like a campfire, but I always thought you had to go camping to have a campfire. Is somebody camping in Moe’s backyard?

I’d better check this out.

Bongo peeking down over the short fence

Just pretend I turned on the floodlights for this picture since all this happened in the dark of night.

And then I heard the strangest sound coming from Moe’s yard. It sounded like music. Guitar music and singing. I hear music coming from the radio, or sometimes from my person’s computer, but I’ve never before heard music coming from a yard.

I wonder if they would mind if I sang along.

Trekking with Toby

Toby and Bongo on the TrailWhat perfect timing!

Today when I headed out my front door to go for a walk on my trails Toby, my neighbor dog was heading out his front door too. To go for a walk on my trails.

Toby’s my friend so I always let him use my trails, but we don’t often use them at the same time. Today would be a special treat.

Toby always smells really good so I give him a few sniffs every time we meet.

.

Bongo and Toby

Then off we headed to the trails.

We were walking along enjoying each other’s company and checking out a smell or two, when I looked back (I’m usually in the lead) and Toby was going the wrong way.

Toby was taking the trail that headed back home!

Toby, wait! We’ve barely gotten started.

Come back Toby! There are more trails to explore. More adventures to be had.

More smells to sniff.

Toby missed it all. I had to trek on the trails without him.

And what’s more disappointing is that I had hoped he could help me with my Detective Dog work – you know, kind of like Dr. Watson was to Sherlock Holmes.

Because I’ve got another mystery to solve.

I’ve got to figure out what this giant asparagus is doing poking out of this spiky ball.

Yucca with a shoot coming out

Maybe I should go bark at Toby’s door.

Fallen Fruit

Bongo sniffing green fruit on the groundI hadn’t even made it to my trails today when I discovered something mysterious.

Strange green things on the ground. What are they? Where did they come from?

I’m still close to home. I think I’d better go back and get my Detective Dog hat.

What do you mean person, we’re not going back? I’ve got a mystery to solve here. I’ve got to be dressed in the proper attire.

Lots of green fruit on the ground

Oh my. This mystery just got deeper. The ground is full of these strange green things.

How did they get here anyway?

Maybe a flock of birds dropped them as they were flying by. Bird bombs. I wonder if anyone got hit by them.

Bongo and fruit on the ground

Now I’ve got another mystery. Person, I really need to get my Detective Dog hat. The mysteries are piling up. Did these green things hit anyone, or not? I can’t possibly solve everything without my hat.

Look up? Where? Why? Are the birds about to drop more of these things?

Tree with green fruit

Would you look at that? There are green things in that tree that look just like the ones on the ground.

Now I’ve got more mysteries. How did those green things get into that tree and why are they staying there?

I don’t care what my person says. I’m heading back for my hat.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

Okay, I’m ready. Now to look for some clues.
