Et Tu, Brute?

Bongo looking at gray skies while on the trailSomething is really strange out on my trails today. I can’t quite put my paws on it – but something is different. I think I’ll stay close to my person. Things just don’t feel quite right.

Thunder Mountain and gray skies

I think I’ve got it. The sky isn’t the same. It’s been blue for a long time now. I’d almost forgotten it could ever be any other color. But it isn’t blue today. Look how gray it is.

My person says all this gray is coming from a storm called Brutus that’s on its way.

Brutus! What kind of a name is that for a storm?

The Weather Channel named it that?

I’ve heard of thunderstorms, and snowstorms, and rainstorms, and hailstorms. I’ve even heard of windstorms. But Brutus storms? This could be really dangerous. Is Brutus going to be falling out of the sky? What would that be like? Or maybe there will be lots of Brutuses falling.

Faint hills in the background

Hey person, I can barely see those hills. I think Brutus is on its way. We’d better get out of here.

Storm covering Thunder Mountain

Oh, no! It’s covering up Thunder Mountain now. We’re surrounded!

Wait a minute. I think I’m getting wet. These little Brutuses that are hitting me seem a lot like rain. Do you think the Weather Channel knew what they were talking about when they named this storm Brutus?

Don’t Sniff the Cactus

Bongo and a Prickly PearToday was tour guide day on my trails. And I got loves for payment – even though I let my person give the people directions.

I would have given the directions if she’d let me, but I couldn’t get a word in edgewise – and she wouldn’t let me off my leash. I could have led them right up the path.

We got the first group on their way and then we met some more people. They were from Chicago. I’m not sure where Chicago is, but it must be a strange place because they don’t have any cactus there.

And one of those people asked my person a question. “How do you keep a dog from sniffing cactus?”

She should have asked me that because I have the answer. It only takes one time.

But really, dogs don’t need to sniff cactus because nobody leaves their messages on them. Well, maybe once – but then they never do it again.

So if I do notice a message on a cactus I know it’s probably from a Chicago dog, or a new pup – but never from one of my friends.

You see that tree over there?

Scents on Sugarloaf

That’s where all the messages are.

And that’s why we Arizona dogs don’t sniff cactus.

Ghost Cars

Empty Trailhead Parking LotYesterday was Halloween and there was not one car in the parking lot by my trails. This was absolutely not possible on a day like this. It was sunny and warm – the perfect kind of day. So I’m sure there were cars parked there – the kind you can’t see.

Ghost cars.

I was a little nervous going through that parking lot – but nothing happened.

I expected to see a lot of people on my trails on a day like this. Even ghost cars have to be driven there by someone.

Person in white on the trail

But I only saw one person – and she was all white. I think she might have been a ghost.

With all this going on I thought maybe I’d see Ghost Dog, but no such luck. He must have been invisible too.

And then, to top it off – there weren’t even any litterbugs visible. Ghost litterbugs could be really dangerous.

Empty where the litter bugs hang out

Litter could appear out of nowhere. Right before my eyes. Yikes! I’d better get out of here!

Finally, after all those ghosts and invisible things, I found someone that I could see.

Quail on a fence

But that quail must have thought it was invisible, because it let us get really close to it. That’s just not normal.

Art Show for Dogs

Bongo Watching an ArtistToday I found more of those people on my trails with the long things and the square things. You know, those paint brush things and canvases. My person says the people are artists with the Sedona Plein Air Festival and they’re in town all week.

Well this morning my person left me home and went to see all the artists painting at the Sedona Heritage Museum. She said it was a show for people, not dogs. I think she’s wrong and she should have taken me.

But three of those artists are pretty special because they came to my trails to do a show just for us dogs. They let my person hang around and watch, but I don’t think she would have been allowed if it wasn’t for me being there too.

I made two new dog friends and we got our own special show.

I’m not sure though if my new friends got tired, or they liked the lady artists better, or they just found the smells on the ground to be better than the art show.

I’m going for the smells. Maybe those artists could throw a little jackrabbit scent into their paintings.

Flower Unseason

Bongo with Indian PaintbrushI’m working on another mystery, and as usual, this one has to do with my trails. You see, a couple of days ago my person and I were trekking through a part of my trails that we don’t usually go on, and we saw something strange.

We saw flowers.

That wouldn’t be so unusual in itself, except that it isn’t flower season anymore. Of course my person had to stop and take pictures of them. At least there were some weeds to munch on next to the flowers. Otherwise I would have been upset about having to wait while my person took pictures – again.

But I’m still working on that mystery. Why were those flowers there at the wrong time of year? There’s something really suspicious going on here.

Wait! Something’s coming to me. When we saw those flowers, weren’t we on our way to see the artists who were painting on my trails?

That’s why we saw those flowers – because we went a different way so we could get to where they were.

And what were those long sticks called that those artists were using?

That’s it! Paint brushes.

And what are those flowers called?

Yup. Indian Paintbrush.

Indian Paintbrush

I’ve got it! I’ve solved the mystery.

Those artists left those flowers there. They were painting pictures of red rocks and I bet that since they were in Sedona they wanted to use Sedona paintbrushes. But then when they got all the red paint they needed, they left those Indian paintbrushes in the ground.

Woo woo! Detective Dog figures it out again.

Long Things and Square Things

Artists in the WoodsI see the strangest things on my trails sometimes, but today I found people doing strange things. Usually the people I see are busy walking on the trail, but these people weren’t. I’m not sure what they were doing, but I guess my person wanted to know too so we went over to investigate.

Sorry person, you cannot share my Detective Dog hat with me. That’s for me alone, even if you do help me with the investigation.

We wandered off the trail and went over to where these people were, and we found a bunch of guys mixing colors with long things and then wiping the long things onto some square things.

It didn’t make any sense to me but my person talked to them and found out the guys were part of the Sedona Plein Air Festival.

I’m not sure what that festival is, but I always thought we had pretty nice air here. I didn’t know it was plain. And why would people want to have a festival for plain air anyway?

We hung around for awhile and my person talked to the guys and looked at their square things with the color on them. I’m not sure what she was looking at. I think they had used up all their rags and those square things were all they had left to wipe stuff off on.

But then something happened and I decided that having a festival for our plain air wasn’t so bad after all.

Washington Weather

Bongo and Friends

Bongo and Friends – No Sister in the Picture

My person’s sister and some friends from Washington State came here to visit me. It was really great except for two things. I thought they would want to have some Arizona weather while they were here – but they decided to bring their weather with them.

.

.

.

.

Sedona Under Clouds

Washington weather visiting Sedona

It’s been sunny every day for about a month and it’s supposed to be sunny again tomorrow, but while they were here we had rain. And thunder. I don’t know where that thunder came from, but it kept up most of the night.

And the second thing was – they captured my person and took her with them, and they didn’t take me. They came all the way here to visit me and they left me at home.

They went to a place where there wasn’t any rain to see a castle that was owned by some dude named Montezuma. Nobody lives there anymore. I can see why. I think somebody stole the stairs.

Montezuma's Castle

I guess God finally decided that we’d had enough rain here and it was time to send it back to Washington, because when they headed back to Sedona they saw a rainbow holding up the rain so it couldn’t hit the ground.

Are you people done traveling around for awhile? My turn now.

Little Yellow Flowers

Bongo Looking Down the TrailThis time of year everything seems to turn yellow. Well, I don’t mean everything. I don’t turn yellow, and neither does my person. And the rocks around here don’t turn yellow. But there are bushes everywhere with little yellow flowers on them.

There’s so many that I have to sort through them just to get to the good weeds.

I thought this time of year was going to be so good. No more thunder and no more heat. Who would have thought that little yellow flowers would be my downfall? I think I’ll bury my person’s camera under a log.

Who Came Out

Sugarloaf in the sunAbout a year ago I did a post celebrating September 1st. That’s when thunder season is supposed to end – or so I thought. In reality we had bunches of thunderstorms during the month of September. I was not very happy.

So this September 1st I decided I’d better not celebrate. And it’s a good thing too because we had a big thunderstorm and bunches of rain. But the storm finally ended and my person said it was safe to go out.

I’m thinking my person announced that on a loudspeaker because I wasn’t the only one who came out.

The sun came out, but I didn’t really notice. There were too many interesting things on the trail.

Bongo missing the view of Sugarloaf

Some mushrooms came out.

Then a rainbow came out, but it seemed to be rainbowerly challenged. It wasn’t all there.

But the best thing of all was when I discovered that my puddle came out.

What do you mean, I can’t drink the water?

I’m not drinking it. I’m just giving my puddle a kiss.

Lizard Blog

Lizard on a rockI see lots of lizards on my trails. They like to hang out in the sun. Most of the time when I come near they run off and hide somewhere.

But I found a lizard that isn’t like that. This lizard actually hung around and posed for my person’s camera.

I think there’s something wrong with that. I mean, lizards are supposed to run. They’re little fraidy cats. My person almost never gets pictures of lizards because they run and hide so fast.

This concerns me. Why did this lizard want to have its picture taken?

Maybe – just maybe, this lizard wants to take over my blog.

Can you imagine that? A lizard blog?

What would a lizard write about?

“Oh, it’s a hot sunny day today. I’m going to hang out on this rock and bake. —Oh, it’s freezing cold now. I’m going to hide under the rock and hibernate.”

How exciting is that? Come on little lizard. Just try to take over my blog. Let’s see how many followers you get.

And just in case you really think you can do it, there’s a cloud over there that’s ready to come down and swallow you up.
